To say Korvin was walking happily through the gather would be a blatant lie. No, stomping was, perhaps, a better term for the angry walk he was displaying. It was partly because his marks pouch was now almost empty, having been spent on the large wher egg that was now stuffed in the large bag over his shoulder. There was no way in all of Pern that he was going to spend the gather hunched in a dark cave waiting for the egg. Faranth knew whether or not it would hatching soon. And yet there was more to his anger than just a light purse and a heavy bag. He was a man on a mission; to find a certain troublesome woman.
He couldn’t remember how many tents and stalls he had passed already looking for her. He hated not having the canines around, but for safety’s sake they had been left behind. Or rather, Gray had been left behind, Boar was still trying to fight off his illness and hadn’t moved much since returning to the Weyr. Korvin rounded a corner, figuring if he couldn’t spot her here then he was just going to give up for the night. Wait… was that? It sure looked like her! With a scowl, Korvin stomped towards her.
“Oy! Firs’ yu whine ‘bout me leavin’, then once I’m back y’avoid me! What gives woman?” He had thought the presence of another hunter and canines would make being trapped in the wherhold more bearable, but he hadn’t actually seen her since they parted ways that day. He crossed his arms and gave her a cold look.

Naomi sighed as she walked past the stalls, wondering what to do about her current situation. That’s when she noticed Korvin walking around; well he was more or less stomping around. She wondered what had gotten him into such a bad mood this time, and silently started to follow him. It wasn’t until he started yelling at some poor drudge that she spoke. I see you are off to a wonderful start. Yelling at poor drudges just trying to make a living, really Korvin have you been in the wilds so long that you have forgot your manners? Her voice was an amused purr, and she tilted her head to the side curiously as she watched and waited for a response from Korvin. To tell the truth she wasn’t really sure what to expect from the man, but she was almost certain he would be more than a little surprised.
Though she had to admit, the girl he had been yelling at did look an awfully lot like herself. But Naomi was wearing the only dress clothes she owned, the fact that they looked almost brand new kind of gave it away. She had had these clothes made just the day before she had gone out and stumbled upon Korvin in the cave. Her clothes were a simple pant and shirt pair that were a simple blue in color, with soft white edges, and were even made of a fine silk. Surprisingly enough, the clothes were a little more flattering that she had intended when she had asked for them, but since she had already paid for them, she wasn’t going to put up too much of a fuss, especially since she only had to wear nice clothes during festivities like this or during a hatching. Which meant she was safe to wear her normal clothes the rest of the time.

The last thing he had been expecting was for ‘Naomi’ to turn around and be just a drudge with the most horror stricken face he had ever seen. Of course, to then have the real Naomi behind him did cause him to turn around faster than he should have; do doubt she’d know he was startled. He huffed as she told him off. “I ain’t got no use fer manners. They don’t get ye anywhere out there.” He crossed his arms and glared at her, though it wasn’t as harsh as it could have been. “What ‘bout you wench? Tryin’ to look the part of a real lady tonight?”
Korvin couldn’t really talk though. He knew how important appearance could be at a gather, especially when you wanted to work a stand. He had actually bathed and groomed for today; and his clothing even consisted of his only clean pair of fancier dress. It wasn’t saying much, a black died pair of pants and shirt was all he owned… but at least he was clean. He had even shaved!

Naomi raised her eyebrows at his words and shook her head. I’m sorry miss, we’ll be going now. With that said, she turned, shook her head at Korvin, and started walking away. She completely ignored what he had said, after all, what gave him room to talk about looking nice when he had done the same thing; he had even shaved for Faranth’s sake! She took a couple of deep breaths and tried to calm herself. There was no need getting overly upset about anything this man did, this was something that she had told herself more times than she could count. It’s what had gotten her through all those turns after he had left. It’s what was also what was making her look like she hadn’t a care in the world. Well, that was part of the reason, the other was that she was secretly hoping to get him drunk one more time.

Either she hadn’t heard him, or she was just getting really good at ignoring him. Korvin assumed it was the latter by the tone of her voice and the shake of her head. Not to mention she had the audacity to tell the stupid drudge that ‘they’ were going. As if she was in control of him! Grumbling, he could help but cross his arms and follow anyways, though he was peeved that she hadn’t even noticed his failed attempt at a compliment.
He scratched at his chin, actually hating the smooth feeling, as he followed behind her, wondering where she was heading and why she was being unusually cold to him. Normally she would have been screaming her head off at him for who knows what reason. He followed a few more moments before finally speaking again. “Well? Y’still didn’t answer. Why y’been avoidin’ me?” He glanced around, looking at the different stalls, many of which were selling the alcohol he told himself he wouldn’t drink this time. “An’ where are y’goin’?”

Naomi was surprised at how good she was at appearing as though she hadn’t heard someone talking. A small smirk stretched the corner of her mouth, and threatened to stretch across the rest of it as well, but she held herself back, and carefully controlled her expression. She looked back over her shoulder as Korvin spoke and raised her eyebrows once again. I haven’t been avoiding you. I just haven’t been looking for you. Why was I supposed to be? After all, I thought you didn’t like me. Her voice was soft and carefully controlled, the only emotion she let slip into her words was that of quiet curiosity. After all, it wouldn’t do to have him thinking that it still hurt her to know that he didn’t like her. I am going to the dancing tent. I don’t know about you. She shrugged one shoulder nonchalantly as she spoke.

Korvin rolled his eyes as Naomi took the ‘I-don’t-give-a-damn’ approach to him. It was a farce. It HAD to be! Naomi was never this calm, and never this composed around him. Her comment stung though, and he couldn’t think of a way to respond without admitting things that he just simply wasn’t going to admit. Of course he thought she would be looking for him; she had seemed so adamant about him being a jerk for leaving the Wherhold in the first place… Why hadn’t she been around once he returned? He grimaced, trying to figure out what was going on inside her head. It was quite possibly driving him nuts. Korvin hated not being able to read posture and body language.
“Well it jus’ so happens I’m headin’ there m’self.” He replied haughtily, though in truth the tent made him a little uneasy. It was where THAT had happened last time. “I do love dancin’. “ His voice dripped cooly as he spoke, his eyes never leaving her as he followed. Something about the act she was putting up was annoying him to no end. He knew Naomi. She was a crazy, hard to predict women who fell into emotion breakdowns like there was no tomorrow. So why was she so composed today. He had to know. As they neared the tent he stepped ahead to hold the tent flap open, with a look that clearly said ‘see, I have manners!’ “I’m surprised yer comin’ ‘ere. Last I recall y’couldn’t do any dancin’ withou’ someone t’carry ya.”

Naomi could feel Korvin’s eyes on her back, and wondered what he was thinking. She had a feeling that the fact that she was acting so indifferent to him wasn’t sitting well with him. In truth, this was all quite hard for her to do, she wanted to turn and fall into his arms crying and begging him to love her, but she knew she couldn’t do such a thing. So instead she had settled for just driving the man as crazy as she possibly could as she possibly could. Yes, that would do just fine. Knowing that her actions were unsettling the man helped ease the pain she felt inside, and even brought up a bit of playfulness she hadn’t even known she had inside of her. In truth it scared her a little to know that there was a part of her that she hadn’t even known existed, but then again, it might provide an endless amount of amusement.
Naomi nodded her head and made an amused sound when she heard Korvin’s haughty response, and then his voice became cool, and she wondered if he too was up to something. Is that so? Well good for you. She looked back over her shoulder briefly and smiled politely at him as she spoke. Oh yes, she could be quite coy when she wanted to be. She raised both of her eyebrows when Korvin stepped ahead of her, and held the tent flap open so she may enter, this really was quite the turn of events, not to mention that she was thoroughly amused by the look he gave her. I guess wild men do have some manners. Though apparently not many. She shook her head smoothly, and calmly entered the tent. She looked around and walked gracefully over to one of the only empty places available, she would show him a thing or two about dancing, just wait.

Oh he wanted to just… he wanted to… he didn’t know what he wanted to do, but he did know that whatever it was would come to him in time. Then she’d regret trying to act so uppity around him. He was pleased to see the brief look of something - perhaps shock? – cross her face at his gentlemanly act, but just as quickly she had fallen back to this masked self of hers. “Enough manners t’deal with someon’ like you.” He replied, stepping into the tent after her though his eyes betrayed his curiosity. What was she up to… normally if she was made at him she would have either flipped out or run off… or a combination of the two… but this… this was something new entirely. This was something he’d expect of a professional hunter; the ease at which she was carrying her mask was… well it was almost intimidating in a strange way. He couldn’t help but want to try to remove it now.
With a shake of his head he tried to clear his thoughts. Removing her mask would be bad. It would show he cared. Not that he cared! He didn’t care at all! He grimaced and leaned against the wall near where Naomi had chosen, his eyes still staying on her. “Y’look silly standin’ there all alone. I would ‘ave thought a pretty young brat like yerself would ‘ave had a date.”

Naomi stood quietly in the little corner she had chosen, and watched all the men and women that were in the tent as she silently calculated what she should do next. She had to keep Korvin on his toes; she just had to keep him guessing. After all, she couldn’t let him know that all of this was just an act, just a way to mask the pain she truly felt inside of her chest. She sighed softly and swayed gently along with the slow beat of the song that was now playing, and for all intents and purposes, it truly looked as though she was just standing there, enjoying the music, and not plotting against a man that was standing near her. At least this way she wouldn’t have to worry about any of the on lookers getting suspicious, after all, she was just another woman waiting to be asked for a dance.
I am sorry you feel that way Korvin, but if it bothers you that much that I don’t have a date, then why don’t you step up, be a man, and be my date? If not, then shush. Naomi’s words were quiet so as not to disturb those around her. She shook her head at Korvin before turning around once again and listening to the music. A small smile appeared on her lips as not one, but two of the men that had been standing on the other side of the tent seemed to be slowly making their way towards them. She wondered curiously if the man that had proclaimed to dislike her would be jealous if she allowed another man to dance with her, especially since the first time she had ever danced, was with him the night that they had shared yet another first only this one was a little more…special.

Oh so that’s the game she was playing huh? Well, she was an idiot if she thought she’d be able to bend him to her will that easily. He snorted, as if amused by her words. “Wha’s that? You’d set’le fer a ‘wild man’. An’ ‘ere I thought you’d be picky.” There, that would show her now wouldn’t it! As if it bothered him that she didn’t have a date. Of course she wouldn’t! No man could put up with a pain in the neck like her!
His eyes glanced to the side as he too took notice of the approaching men, though he didn’t say a word, only narrowed his gaze as he watched them. He wondered if they were headed for Naomi, or for the table full of food a little ways off. Of course, it didn’t matter either way really. He had no say in who she danced with, and the songs seemed to be short… so before long the men would be on their merry way again, leaving her to look like a lonely fool. HA. See Naomi, he seemed to think to himself, I won’t fall for your tricks. He couldn’t help the cocky, victorious grin as he waited. She’d fail her bluff before long, he had no doubt of it.

Naomi merely glanced back at Korvin when she heard him snort, and merely raised one of her eyebrows at him. She rolled her eyes and shook her head, her expression clearly saying that she thought he was being childish. I figured it would shut you up long enough for me to get some peace and quiet, but apparently I was wrong. Again her voice was soft enough to not disturb those around her. Naomi smiled sweetly as the first of the two men came over to her and asked her to dance. She curtsied like a lady and let him lead her out onto the dance floor. The song that started to play was the same song that her and Korvin had danced to, and she wondered if he would even remember that. She pushed those thoughts out of her mind, and focused on the man that she was now dancing with.
Naomi surprised even herself with how gracefully she was moving on the dance floor. She seemed to be moving like quite the lady for sure. She curtsied once again to the man she had been dancing, and had even learned his name before walking back over to where she had left Korvin. She didn’t look at him, or talk to him as she resumed standing where she had been, and watched the other dancers. To tell the truth she wasn’t all that tired, but when another man offered her a chair to sit on, she graciously took it and gently kissed him on his cheek before sitting down and resting a bit. After all, she would need all of her energy if she was going to keep up this mask of pretending. Either way she kept her movements carefully controlled as she waited for what would come.

It was stupid. This was stupid. Why was he standing here watching that stupid huntress dance and flirt. He had better things to do with his time shard it all! And yet he couldn’t drag himself away from where he was standing. It was just a dance… it would end, she would come back with some snide remark and he’d be able to excuse himself all gentleman like as she seemed to want. He could be civilized if he had to. It would probably upset Naomi to know Korvin didn’t remember the song… he had already been beyond drunk at that point and, though he’d never admit it, he had been too preoccupied with other things to pay the music attention.
Ah, the song was over and she was coming back now. He started to move, to make a snide comment and leave, but then she had to go and be all flirty with a second man! It bothered him. He didn’t know why, but it did. “An’ ‘ere I thought you were jus’ shy all along. Guess I was mistaken.” He grumbled, more to himself then her, though she could probably hear it anyways. He walked over and looked down at her. “Wha’. You tired already? That guy barely moved that whole dance.” He supposed he should drag her to the dance floor and show her how a real man danced… but just then the music picked up a faster beat and Korvin grimaced. Slow dancing he could do… but he’d just make a fool of himself with a beat this quick. So it was that he only stared down.

Naomi didn’t know what to expect from Korvin when she returned, but his grumbled response definitely wasn’t it. She kept her expression carefully schooled as she looked at him. Excuse me, did you say something? She tilted her head to the side a little, and gave him the most convincing innocent look she could, though she wouldn’t be surprised if he saw through that and into the amused curiosity that was hiding beneath it. She wondered if the fact that she had been flirting with two other men had hit a nerve, but if it had Korvin was doing a damn good job at keeping it hidden from her. Why do you care if I’m tired? What you want a dance as well? Well I think I saw some younger drudges over there that I’m sure wouldn’t mind. Her voice was sweet and gentle as she spoke.
Naomi smiled sweetly at Korvin before turning back around to watch the music. Well, if she hadn’t hit a nerve before she figured that her most recent statement would. After all, she was saying that he could only dance when he was drunk and as long as he had a younger woman with him. The fact that at one point in time, she had been that younger woman was still a tender spot, but she made sure to keep that well hidden from him. Then the music started to pick up in beat, and she wondered what Korvin would do next. She was actually kind of hoping that he would challenge her to a dance, but then again, she had yet to see him dance except for when he was drunk. So that probably wasn’t going to happen any time soon now would it? No, she had a feeling it wouldn’t.

His eyes twitched, visibly twitched at her response. If Naomi wasn’t the most irritating, annoying, pain in the butt woman on all of Pern then Korvin didn’t know who was. “I’m sure yu’ll be shocked t’know this hunter ‘as actual standards.” There was a little more bite to his voice then was probably expected, but it was taking all of his willpower not to just flip a table and storm out. He pulled over a chair of his own, dropping into it with more force than he meant to. “Besides, why would I want t’go over there when I ‘ave such a charmin’ lady t’watch.” His voice was still cool, though there was definitely a hint of annoyance to it.
He turned away from her then, his eyes going to the various dancers that were weaving about on the floor. Perhaps if he watched them long enough he’d be able to pick up some of the moves and survive…. Doubtful though. He just couldn’t seem to wrap his head around the coordination needed for fast-paced dances, since he had never learned the basics. Despite that, his foot tapped out the beat of the song and he was subconsciously beginning to sway; albeit poorly. Another approaching man caught his eye and Korvin shot him the angriest look he could muster.
