The day was hot. But the world was damp. Steam crept into the cave. The temperature was miserable and sweaty, rain or not.
Abyrath started, head jerking from her paws. The egg nestled between her paws twitched and shuttered with a quick movement. The shell seemed to groan under the excitement that pressured the tender shell.
The amethyst trumpeted a random and quite loud bugle, screaming a mental and outloud cry.
The clutch-her clutch-Rindell's clutch was hatching!
Ka'mond was shaking. He was torn. Hus dragon was giving the Rebellion a clutch - more objectors... And it was his fault...
He watched Abyrath croon with delight and totter around her two eggs.
The largest greenish colored egg shivered. It was time to be free. The lumpy sooty egg hardly stirred, its mind sleepy and relaxed. It was happy in its egg... why did it have to leave?

The more Jallis had spoken to people on Rindell island, the more she wanted a dragon. The excitement had grown until she found it difficult to fall asleep at night, her mind full of baby dragons, imagining herself Impressing a green one night, an amethyst another...even a bronze showed up once, unlikely as that was. Sleep deprivation, of course, was not going to make her more likely to get a dragon, but she couldn't help it. By the time she heard Abyrath's cry, she really just wanted a nap.
As dragons began humming and Pria, head jerking up, popped out of sight to head to the sands, Jallis gasped, frozen for a few seconds as she processed what was happening. The eggs! The eggs were hatching! An undiginified little squeak of pleasure escaped her and she gathered her leatherworking tools into some semblance of a package, shoving them into a corner and declaring her workspace sufficiently cleaned up. Jumping up, she sprinted to her room, out of breath and a bit wild-eyed by the time she got there, but not caring.
She tore off her clothes, replacing them with the white robe and shoving her feet into the flimsy sandals, impatient with herself and yet knowing that there was probably no need to rush like this; it wasn't likely that a dragon would already be hatched when the mother sounded the alert. The thought was enough to slow her for a few steps, allowing her to close the door without slamming her fingers in it, but the excitement caught her up again and she found her steps speeding up until she arrived at the sands at a dead sprint.
No. Enough. This was silly. She took a few deep breaths, bouncing on her toes slightly despite her efforts to calm herself, and then walked carefully out to the sands, heading to join the female candidates as she beamed at Abyrath. You were meant to be formal, weren't you? Were you supposed to greet the mother? Thank her? But then again, you weren't meant to speak until you'd Impressed. After a few baffled seconds, Jallis settled for just inclining her head in a small bow before turning her attention the the large green egg.

Capelth was woken from a sound sleep by Abyrath's call, and she shot the other amethyst a hard glare before checking her own eggs. Neither of them were really moving quite yet, but with the other's eggs starting to hatch, she figured it couldn't be long now, and added her own bugle to the noise, taking a perverse joy in possibly waking others from naps as well. Candidates and other...people. Whatever. There are eggs hatching, better get down here. Just in case there was anyone in Rindell who hadn't noticed yet.
-------------------------------------
It didn't take long for Aristide to meet up with Rox once the announcement of the hatching started, and Zexx was, once again, reluctantly left behind as they took a spot in the stands. He seemed to be leaving the canine behind more often than he liked, lately, and he didn't like it. It may have helped him practice getting around on his own, if only a little bit, but he would have preferred having the canine beside him. He liked the extra companionship from Zexx.
He stared forward, seeing nothing, but his ears were working hard, picking up snatches of conversation from the other spectators. Finally, he said, "So it's Abyrath's eggs hatching first, eh? I believe hers was the first of the eggs that I touched, as well," he said, recalling the day with a warm smile.

G'daroMine! My eggs! Their hatching! Banemith trumpeted. G'daro groaned, he was tired to the bone from work. He slugged out of bed and put on his clothes. Fizgig and Bellatrix awoke and perched on his shoulders, as the four made their way to the hatching sands.
They arrived and took their positions: G'daro and Banemith on the sands with Abryath and Fizgig and Bellatrix on Banemith's back, humming. G'daro chuckled, he had never seen Banemith so happy, since he is the sire of one of the clutches. This was going to be fun after all!

Mokiro was more than happy when he got the call that the eggs were hatching, and quickly ran back to his barracks from the where he had been working in the kitchens. He figured that the hatching sands would be hot, but he had never imagined that they would be That hot. He groaned quietly to himself, but proudly took his place among the other male candidates. There was a broad smile on his face as he watched the mothers and their eggs, eagerly waiting for them all to hatch.

Kinurninth knew it was time, she had known for a while that it would be, such was a mother's instincts. The last and final of the four Amethysts nodded her head, nudging her two eggs closer to the smallest of the bunch between the young dragon's feet, Kinurninth's soft humming a greeting as a small crack ran down the side of the egg. The noise only escalated as more and more dragons landed in the small cavern, the uncertainty of the Gather's events having left the rebels' minds for a little while at least.
No, despite Noita having disappeared after the attack on her life and her main Knights, this was something that refused to be dampened by the quaking atmosphere that had settled over the remaining riders on Rindell. K'er snuggled in against Kinurninth's leg, his dark head tilting as her egg cracked and wobbled again, stopping for a moment as a large shadow passed over. Nimarath had arrived at last as well, the last Sub-Queen remaining on Rindell Island after Aela and Talath left hissing a warning to a Brown as she sidled up in the small space. Eiko waved half-heartedly at her once classmate, watching as the tiny egg finally broke open to reveal an even smaller occupant.
The dragonet quivered up at the watching stares of its brethren, the still wet form dwarfed even by the meager size of its mother. Moving its head from one side of the cavern to the other in order to see what surrounded it, the creature shakily clambered to its feet, and instead fell back onto the hot sands with a squeak. No, no it wasn't getting up....maybe it could just crawl over there to those few weird looking things? Except, no except there were other things in front of him! The white flapped his sticky wings, egg goop flinging against another egg as he tried to see above the larger forms of Abyrath's clutch.

Jallis was very nearly trembling with excitement. No...now she was trembling with excitement. Even if she walked away with nothing, this was the highlight of her...well, her life maybe? She'd never been this close to a dragon egg before the touching a short while ago. Certainly never been this close to a newly hatched dragon. How many people got to be this close to newborn dragons?! Okay, maybe quite a few, since every weyrbrat had the right to Stand, and a lot of people got searched, and there were healers on the Sands... But still!
She watched everything with wide eyes, her breath catching as Kinurninth nudged the eggs closer. Oh Faranth this was really happening! And also oh Faranth: She needed to get a hold of herself, because she was being silly and pathetic in front of the entire weyr and-
Oh shards! A baby!
A rather embarrassing squeak of delight left Jallis as the first egg broke open. How did people stand this? The suspense, the excitement, oh shells what if the little white wasn't going towards his bonded because his bonded wasn't here, what if he went between?
Jallis didn't realize she was hyperventilating - the excitement and new anxiety for the baby just too much to handle - until her vision started going spotty. Well that was odd... She'd never fainted before, didn't know how to stop it, and so was not at all expecting her vision to suddenly go entirely black as she collapsed to the ground. Good thing she was unconscious, because she would definitely be embarrassed about this.

The Hatching Sands were filled with noise, it seemed like, between the chattering from the crowd of spectators and the humming of the dragons. It wasn't overpowering, but it certainly left a buzz in Aristide's ears. The noise level abruptly dropped, however, and it wasn't hard for Aristide to guess why. Apparently the first egg had hatched and there was a dragonet looking for its rider.
He leaned forward in his seat, eagerly listening for hints of what was going on down on the Sands. There was muttering from the area around his and Rox's seats; apparently the first dragon to hatch was a white. Well, wasn't that interesting...
Aristide was intensely focused on the eggs, in fact, he was practically doing the mental equivalent of shouting "Here, dragon, dragon!" Just because he was barred from standing due to being blind didn't seem like a good enough reason to keep himself from hoping, for all that it was unlikely any of the dragons would notice him. That was why he was particularly slow on the uptake when one of the candidates fainted. It was only after some time that he noticed something was wrong, though he wasn't sure what exactly had caused it. "Did...someone actually faint?" He asked, slightly amused at the idea. She was probably a newer candidate, he thought.

He’s not even sure why he came. He had trained a few of the candidates, briefly since his arrival had not been timed well. Accidentally…of course. He doesn’t care if they bond or not, though the idea of watching a few of them get torn to shreds sounds interesting to him. Really though if he has to admit it, there was one annoyance of a female that he wants to see, a Jallis if he remembers correctly. She had gotten on his nerves with surprising skill and nearly had her head taken off with a few near misses of his right arm. So he kept that as his excuse for showing up, allowing Szyth to settle his considerably large bronze bulk with the other dragons watching before he stiffly walks down closer to the railing to get a better look.
He moves people out of his way without a care using his cane to beat those to slow to get away fast enough. Ignoring protests, swears and threats he stops just close enough to probably annoy the mother dragon to watch. Huh, small clutch. Pathetic. He should have gone to the weyr, he thinks but then again the weyr was filled with a bunch of air headed sycophants and they probably wouldn’t have accepted him anyway. He was after all –invalid-.
Love, it would seem she has fallen over Szyth’s rather deep sensual voice curls around his mind making him shudder for a moment before he turns his stony grey eyes on the rangy bunch of scraps of humanity that were the candidates. He spots the girl, now on the ground and snorts out a sound of utter disgust. Really, passing out? What was wrong with that git. Completely air headed. Pathetic. She was going to burn herself as well and he was not about to go on the sand and risk his own life to get her ass back up.
Szyth, with a sigh shifted his large bulky frame between the other dragons watching to awkwardly step down towards the sand. He’s mindful to mutter polite little ‘excuse me’s in the minds of those he nearly steps on. He gets close enough that he can lower his tail onto the sands poking the unconscious girl once, twice, three times before he flees back to where he had been sitting before. He does not want to tempt the anger of the mothers.
Oh yes like that will wake her up. Probably broke a rib
A mental snort was his only response. He twitched the left side of his body stiff as he turns his gaze back on the eggs. He hopes most of them bond, having to redo candidate lessons would be a trial for him, one he’s not ready to deal with. Most of these weren’t even worth the dragons that would hatch, if any would hatch at all. He had his ideas that most were duds.
Dearheart, you are in a grumpy mood even for you
He ignores his dragon instead bangs his cane against the nearest person beside him. Just because. He mutters a little ‘oops sorry’ that has no feeling in it what so ever.

Nonono! How could the others be hatching so quickly?!
A hissing whine came from the now violently shaking green egg. It wasn't fair! This one was so much larger, much stronger!!
A sharply clawed paw burst out of the egg, dripping with goop and bits of shell. The limb was a seaweed green, with a hue of blue. The leg retracted, a little muzzle sniffing out of the hole, nostrils flaring.
What.... what if some other mean dragon harmed Hers before she could get out?! No! Never! Never ever in her life would her perfect rider get hurt! She... she was a protector. And any dragon who got between Her bonded and her would pay a price!!
A tail lashed out another part of the egg, possiblely smacking anyone near and slamming the sand. Ugh! She was stuck!
More of her nose shoved out, then with a growl, an entire neck. The shell broke into shards upon her hide, and she flicked at them angrily. The large green was not a vicious dragon. She sometimes grows agitated, and causes damage without meaning to.
Oh!ohohohohoh! She spun in a frantic and concerned circle, looking for something she felt was missing. Oh shards! What was wrong? She sniffed at each leg, inspected her paws finding little fins upon the wrists. Fins... like..like a fish!! Then she sat and looked over her sandy green belly. Glad to find nothing odd there... Her tail was ordinarily forked but fins laced the edges.
Baffled, she peered at the other hatched dragon, yellow eyes studying him. She let out a high-pitched whine. S-s-s-she was missing....missing... missing... WINGS!!!
Oh! How could Hers love a useless wingless creature? Did this make her as low as a wher? Or a disgusting mutant, even if her color was a true rank?
The little wingless baby sat, and she whimpered. Oh.... what would she do? Surely... She brightened. Hers would not mind?
--- The entire hatching had Abyrath fretting. What if her babies were harmed? Or impressed to horrid evil people?
It took all of Ka'mond's mind to keep his dragoness seated as the green egg hatched. The amethyst could and almost wanted to eat Hers for not letting her comfort the poor wingless thing. And she would indeed harm the bonded of her dear daughter if they so happened to mock the deformity!!
I'm sure she'll impress to a loving rider. Dragons usually seem to...
Abyrath snorted, giving Hers a quick tail slap and a glare. Have you ever given birth or laid such a clutch?! No. So let a pitiful mother worry over her child's future.
Ka'mond flushed and was quiet.
---
Roxikanta shifted so if her blind friend somehow managed to topple, she could try and snatch him. The girl fell on the sands, causing the red-head to stand. "Yes.... a girl did faint... Oh, poor thing..." What a pity! To faint in such an event!
But then eggs hatched, and once again the crowd was distracted. "Aristide, a little white hatched first and... oh!" She gasped as the crowd stilled. "The large egg ; the one you touched from Abyrath's clutch, it...it has..."
Rox fell silent as the dragonet cried loudly. "That egg held a green... a wingless green. W-with fins."

"Well, I certainly hope she wakes up soon...or at least that someone will pull her off the sands. I know from experience how hot they can be, it can't be pleasant for her when she wakes up." His voice was mild, but to tell the truth, he was actually a little worried. A prone candidate was much easier to be hurt by clumsy dragonets, who might stumble over or even walk right over her.
When the crowd stilled, he knew something was up, but he waited for Rox to tell him what was happening. Had another egg hatched, or had something happened to the white? He soon got his answer: The big egg had hatched a large and healthy (so far as he could tell) green, only one with fins instead of wings. "Huh...Well, I'm sure she'll be the best swimmer in the Rebellion before long." Such mutations didn't bother him too much; as long as it wasn't injuring her, a healthy dragon was a useful dragon whether they were green or bronze or amethyst or white.

It was hard to stay unconscious with so much noise all around you. Add in the heat burning Jallis and the dragon poking her ribs and she woke up fairly quickly. Not quickly enough to remain entirely unscathed, however. Her side felt sore, though nothing seemed broken, and everywhere her body had touched the sand hurt. A lot. She quickly pushed off the sands, getting as far as her knees before she realized another dragon had hatched. At least...it must be a dragon, right? It seemed to have fins instead of wings and - oh shards her knees hurt.
She scrambled the rest of the way to her feet, looking rather ridiculous with sand all in her hair and half of her face and one arm an angry red. She stared at the green for a few seconds longer and then looked at the candidate nearest her. "Is that...normal? Common? It isn't, is it? Can't be? Oh wait, shards I'm not supposed to talk." She looked at the dragon mothers, aghast. Since she'd already broken the rules she may as well use two more words to try to repair the damage, right? "I'm sorry!" She pressed her lips together, swearing to herself she would make no more noises. Though it was hard to be silent with a little dragon sitting in the sand looking so sad.

The little green cried, getting to her paws clumsily. Hers... where was Hers? Her head turned in every direction, her nose sniffing hard. Where... She needed Hers. She wanted the comfort and love her rider would give her... Another sad sound came from the large green, and she nearly tripped over Jallis in her haste. What if Hers was not here? What would happen? The dragonet was frantic, and then her entire body froze. There. She had found him. Mine! Miiiine! Oh Mine! Why are you way up there when you should be here, with me? I am so glad I found you, my other half. You are my rider. We both have our problems, but together... Together Mine... We will beat everyone. Please come to your Ninianeth. If only Hers could see! The dragonet grew more agitated, and tried to climb the stands, claws scraping the stone almost savagely. Aristide! Her Aristide! Why was he not on the sands? She stared at him, Hers, with rainbow eyes. Oh she loved him. She would keep him safe, whether he wanted it or not. No on would stop her from having Hers. She was a guardian. He was her perfect, caring bonded.... --- Roxikanta made a sound of agreement, stepping to be next to Aristide. "The green... she's growing frantic... O-Oh she's..." Roxikanta put a hand to Aristide's shoulder. "She's coming this way! It.. she.." The red-head could tell by the sudden focus, the green wanted Aristide. --------------- Pronunciation: Nine-E-an-eth Impresses to: Aristride Mutations: Wingless, Fins Size: 25.2 feet full growth Color Codes: 28ae7b6afb9292cca6c3fdb8Personality: Tough, Protective, Slightly Vain, Stubborn, Determined, Hard-working, Brave, A bit Bossy, Challenging-- Mind-Voice:
--I do not care what the others think. I only need you. Together, Mine, we will be better. I could put a Queen to shame if I tried.
-- I will protect you. I can not let a person hurt you. You can be upset and testy, but you are Mine. I will be your guardian. We are strange to everyone, but we are strong.
-- Don't do that! I know what I am doing, and you should listen. We are best Mine. Even if I cannot flame thread, I am useful.
-- I am pretty. I am rght Mine? I know you cannot see... but you love me?
-- Just let me show you this image! I can be your eyes, Mine!! Ninianeth has a very deep (atleast for a female) voice. She is quite persuasive and commanding really. She constantly is praising Hers, and telling him over and over how perfect they are for each other. She tends to boss others around. She's secretly jealous of not being able to fly. She hides that by repeating how superior she is, or could be if she wanted to. It is her way of coping.
Jallis stumbled backwards as the green nearly collided with her. She almost went back down to the sands, but managed to keep upright with a few quick steps. She had sworn not to say words, but she couldn't keep entirely silent, and a sympathetic little noise escaped her at the green's clear distress. Her...her bonded was here, right? What if they weren't and- no, no, she wouldn't allow such thoughts.
Anyway, the fact that the green wasn't between already had to mean the person was here...right? Or close? She watched closely as the dragon suddenly froze and then turned... Huh. She had turned towards the stands. This was Jallis' first Hatching, so she had no idea how common or uncommon that might be but...it did seem strange, to her. If someone was elligable, after all, wouldn't they be here? Why would you not stand if you had a chance?
She watched with wide eyes as the green clambered up the stands and Impressed. She let out another little squee of delight, though this time she remembered to breathe, having now figured out that that was what had gone wrong last time. She resumed the slight bouncing on the balls of her feet, looking at the white and then around the sands, trying to guess who he would choose.

Ah. The girl was getting up. Good, he supposes though she looks more like a tunnel rat than ever now with her hair full of sand and her face pinched like it was. He shakes his head stepping forward a bit to get a better view of the newest hatchling. Something seems wrong but he can’t quite put his finger on it-
The poor thing has no wings dearheart! Oh, what will that little lady to? Szyth crooned his worry towards the little green. He would keep an eye out on her, it was how he worked. Of course chances were the mother would chew a whole through him or the egglet would not want his help but he would give it anyway. He always had a soft spot for the tiny things especially the tiny things that could be made fun of.
Dant’ris can’t stop the look of mingled disgust and horror that forms over his face, though its only half since the left side is frozen stiff. Its grotesque on him and he knows it. He’s quick to go back to his bland look of disapproval though others had already seen the disgust on his face, the horror. There was no hiding it. What sort of dragon would that be? She can’t fly, she could never fight thread properly she would be stuck on the ground like a wher. He shudders to think but then he realizes something. Deep down he’s feeling sympathy for her. She and him they were alike in many ways.
He could not talk to other dragons though but his own could. Szyth looped his long muscular neck down till it was near the wingless green and he crooned a greeting to her. He does not want to bother her bonding but he drops a little comment for her she can either answer or ignore it.
You are beautiful, I would love to see you dance in the water when you are older He means every word though obviously there was no sexual coloring to it merely a bother type feeling. He nods his head at her bonded before he inches back to get more comfortable. He has his own deformities after all. Snubbed nose thick body to long limbs and tail. He knows what it feels like.
