Aristide could hear the green's sad cries as she wandered the sands, and he hardly needed Rox to tell him to realize she was upset. He tried not to react, but still, a frown came on to his face. He hoped she found her rider soon--despite whatever body parts she may or may not have had, she was still a dragon, shardit, and there was bound to be someone out there for her. Aristide certainly wouldn't turn down a dragon like that...
He felt Rox lay her hand on his shoulder. The green was coming up into the stands? Why would she do a thing like that? Of course, it didn't take him long to figure it out. Mine! Miiiine! Oh Mine! Why are you way up there when you should be here, with me? I am so glad I found you, my other half. You are my rider. We both have our problems, but together... Together Mine... We will beat everyone. Please come to your Ninianeth.
He felt like cheering. Hah! Didn't that show everyone, the first hatching he'd attended and he managed to Impress against expectations! That would show them all what he could do--and oh yeah, Ninianeth needed him, he'd better get down there. There wasn't time to shuffle past all the people sitting around him to get down to the sands. Aw, Shard it, he thought, wasn't like there was much they could do to him now. "Coming through!" he bellowed, pushing through the crowds roughly and even climbing over the occasional chair to get down faster. "Out of the way, I've got a dragon to get to!" He probably wasn't very popular with many people, but he didn't particularly care. He did have a decent idea of the hatching sands layout and where the eggs were, so he wasn't likely to get lost. He just followed the direction of Ninianeth's voice.
There you are! she crooned as he finally made his way out of the crowd and to her side. The green's head cocked to one side curiously as she heard the bronze's message for her. She crooned gratefully to him and turned back to Hers. Mine, he said I could dance in the water. Is that true? Am I beautiful, despite my lack of wings?
Aristide--or rather, A'tide now, he'd have to get used to that--grinned and stroked her neck. "Don't ever let other people tell you what you can and can't do, 'Neth. I often find they're wrong. I'm sure you'll be the best swimmer on Pern, without those giant wings to get in your way. Of course you're beautiful."
Ninianeth crooned happily, but before long made her hunger known. She'd found her rider, now she needed to find some food.

Capelth's eggs, which had remained stationary until now, suddenly began to shake, as if the first Impression of the Hatching had triggered them into action. The first egg was shaking so violently it fell, rolling to a stop a ways away before it stopped moving, as if the hatchling inside was tired of fighting to get out, or was perhaps dizzy.
The second egg, however, rocked back and forth intensely before a great crack split down the side, and an oddly coloured head poked out, followed by two front feet, a body, rear feet, and a tail. People in the stands immediately broke out in a babble of talk. That was no green! It was a Lazuli, a color rarely seen, even in the Mutant Rebellion!
The hatchling seemed to realize exactly what an uproar she had caused, as she raised her head proudly, despite her wings still dripping goo onto the sands. They loved her! That was all that mattered! As they should, of course. She was a rare gem, a diamond among the rough, a Queen among knaves! Raising her head higher, she took a wobbly step forward, but her wings, still wet, tripped her up, and she plowed face first into the sand.
Peeping in annoyance, the Lazuli picked herself up with a rather huffy squawk. Fine, if she was going to trip... she wouldn't walk! A dragon as rare and lovely as she was did not trip! Sitting herself down, her tail curling around her paws, the tiny hatchling viewed the Candidates individually, trying to find Hers from afar. Eventually, she would find Hers. She was sure! After all, Hers was here. Why would Hers not be? She was perfect, rarer than rare! Hers would be here. She just had to look...

As another egg started to shake, Jallis reluctantly tore her gaze from the newly bonded pair. It was just so lovely to watch...even if the new greenrider seemed a bit rough in his efforts to get to his lifemate. Oh well, she'd be excited too, and wouldn't be too thrilled if a bunch of people stood in her way.
She watched as the egg rolled away from its original location, trembling violently before it...it stopped. She tilted her head a little, a puzzled look on her face. When another crack sounded - this one sounding quite significant - she looked closer at the egg. It had sounded like something had happened - something big - and yet she saw no difference. Must have been on the other side, where she couldn't see it.
The muttering from the crowd had her looking around and that was when she discovered that she had entirely missed the appearance of another dragon. Guess that explained the loud crack. It looked green, at first, but...not quite. She caught the muttering just enough to hear the word "lazuli". Huh. Well that was unusual. She certainly hadn't expected that, and now she watched the gr- the lazuli with somewhat greater interest, making a mental note to ask someone about the dragonet after all of this was done.

The white crooned at the arrival of the wingless green, his head tilting one way and then the other as he took a few tentative steps backward. Yes, this big one needed her space, and he was willing to give it. Besides, there were much more interesting things to be looking at. Like...well...like...ummmr....that thing over there that was shaking and jumping and...oh that was another one of him. Well, not exactly considering this was a female...and she was shiny...okay, not shiny, shiny, just sort of luminescent in that silvery sheen over sea foam green and cerulean blue sort of way.
It looked pretty though, really pretty.
The white twitched his nose, itching it with a front paw as he looked around, his wings flapping slightly as he moved. There had to be something he was supposed to do. Surely there was something he could find, or someone, or...or....hmmr, what about those things over there? Getting up onto wobbly legs, and oh yes were they ever wobbly, he crawled over to the edges of the stands where those other white things were all huddled together. They all were sort of like him. Well, not really because they had pink and furry things on their heads and their white hides weren't hides at all but something else...wings perhaps?
Nudging one who nearby, the white crooned and licked the candidate's leg as it poked gently into its mind.
'Do you know where I'm supposed to go? I'm really hungry, yes really hungry. These are all weird things....don't you think these are weird things? I think they're weird....yeah, weird. Oh...I'm hungry, did I tell you that I'm hungry? Yes? Oh, sorry to be a bother again then. I'm Shyith, are you my JallisMine? I think you're my JallisMine...you seem like my JallisMine at least...I think you are. If you're not, can you pretend to be?'
Looking up at the girl, Shyith wagged his tail a bit in a quick flicking movement, his head looking up at her despite it being quite low to the ground...after all he was a white, and white's were tiny. Absentmindedly the white had pawed at the ground though as he spoke, and when he finally got to the point of asking if she could be His, he gave his head a little movement not unlike that of a runnerbeast when it's interest is captivated by something. Well, the white even gave a little snort and nickering-like croon.

Jallis had been somewhat distracted from the white, sitting as it was back among the eggs. Its sisters, after all, were being quite active, moving about, one even Impressing... So she was surprised when the white was suddenly in front of her. Shards, how had it moved across the sands without her noticing? For someone who was so very excited about watching the hatching, she didn't seem to actually be watching the hatching very well.
When the white licked her leg, she stepped back, assuming she was in the poor thing's way. When it just followed her that single step and spoke into her mind, she stared at it. It didn't really process that baby dragons didn't speak to people other than their bonded, and so she was preparing to explain the process to the young white - it had to find its lifemate and then Impress and then its lifemate would lead it off and feed it. She had opened her mouth to tell the white this, in fact, when he continued on and said her name. Wait, what?
She stared, mouth slightly open, wordless. The white said her name three times, though, so...it couldn't have been a mistake. Or a coincidence. She crouched down, looking at the tiny dragon. "Uh...I...I'm Jallis, yes? Does that make me yours?"
Shyith considered her for a moment, his eyes going rainbow by the time he spoke. Yes, I do think you're Mine. Now I think you should feed me, JallisMine. And perhaps we should move away because... I think the things that are me but different want to get to the things that are...you but different. He looked around the sands, again. I also believe that I am the only male one of me. Here, I mean. Right now on the sands. Isn't that odd? There seem to be plenty of male yous.
Jallis listened to all of this with wide eyes, frozen by the act of Impression. How had the other new weyrling run down the stairs like that? How was he not utterly overwhelmed? All she wanted to do was cuddle the dragon to her chest and curl up in a corner. It hit her, finally, that her dragon - her Shyith - was hungry. She could feel it, too, in an entirely uncomfortable manner.
She needed to feed him and she wanted to snuggle him... There was a way to combine these two activities, surely! "Okay, Shyith, let's get you fed." There was an adoring carefulness in the way she said his name, as if it was something precious and she was afraid she would break it. Leaning forward a little, she scooped up the little dragon. He weighed much more than Pria, of course, but was still manageable.
Shyith rested his head atop Jallis' shoulder, tail dangling down. His lifemate had one arm under his back legs, the other arm around his back just beneath his wings, holding him close. Yes I...I do suppose this is one way of getting me to food, Mine. Though I notice that no others seem to be holding theirs like this. He didn't sound like he minded, though, simply gazing out calmly at the crowd as His brought him to the food station.

Everything seemed to be happening so fast, Mokiro thought his head might start to spin. When he finally calmed his nerves and his empty stomach, he looked closely at the dragonets that hadn’t impressed yet. He took a deep breath, trying to see a dragon that might be his. Since the mothers were only amethysts, he figured that if he did impress, it would only be to a fighter. If not then, oh well, he was sure that there were going to be more clutches at the Rebellion eventually right? Then, somewhere to left another pair impressed, this time it was a girl to a tiny looking white dragon. He thought it was kind of cute the way the girl lovingly carried her dragon to the food, and he wondered if his own dragon might be so small. Oh well, he was more interested in what was happening on the sands currently anyways to pay much attention to the newly impressed pairs.

Banemith crooned as his firstborn hatched...different. It had no wings at all and had fins. He watched as she quickly Impressed, clambering up the stands to find Hers. Banemith chuckled and said to G'daro: She may be different, but she is still my daughter. You think so? G'daro replied But, she won't be able to fly... It does not matter, she will will be treated like any other dragon. Banemith said, nudging his rider gently. G'daro gave a weak smile. At least she found a rider of her own. he said, stroking his dragon's nose. She will be an interesting one to watch.

Abyrath watched her daughter Impress, crooning quite happily. Yes. That would be a fine pair. Her gaze now shifted to the lumpy grey-black-silver egg still unmoving.
The amethyst's heart sank, and ignoring Ka'mond, she snakes forward. Her snout nudged the cold shell. Cold.... cold shell. The faint life did not stir, its spirit was faded.
A sharp wail of sadness came from Abyrath, causing Ka'mond to bolt to his dragoness's side. Oh.... oh Mine... it... it grows icey. There... there is no thrill of life here... I am sad... my child does not wake or hatch.... my... my baby...!!
The amethyst cried with the fierce and sudden wave of loneliness. She'd failed... she was not a good mother!! Her baby died! Her little innocent dove....
Ka'mond was torn with Abyrath's sheer pain. He... he hurt too....

Aela had been watching the Hatching from the Stands. She smiled at each Impression. It made her happy when something like Impressions happened. Then there was a wail. Aela turned her gaze to Ka'mond and Abyrath. Tal?
She thinks she isn't a good mother. The Obsidian responded.
With that Aela made her way down to the Sands. She picked her way carefully through the broken eggs shells to the Amethyst and her rider. "Abyrath. Don't feel bad. There have been duds before. I know this isn't what you want to hear, but you aren't a bad mother. Sometimes these things happen." Aela placed a gentle hand on the Amethyst's hide. "I've never been good at explaining this."
Abyrath. Even though I only had a small Clutch there was one dud from what I heard. Talath crooned and nuzzled her daughter. There will be more Clutches. You will win some and lose same. The same holds true for Threadfalls. Not everything is happy and cheerful. You have to take the bad with the good.
Aela nodded, "That's right Abyrath. Nothing in this life comes easy. There will be painful moments, but NEVER think your a bad mother. Your a good Dragon and with the ones that did Hatch means a future. Be proud of your living babies." The woman nodded and turned to Ka'mond. "I know its hard watching your lifemate have a dud, but you have to move on." She placed a hand on his shoulder.
"You have a great Dragon. After all look at who her mother is. Abyrath means a lot to you correct? Don't lose her. Don't let her wallow too long, it can become dangerous. She can grieve, but you do have to move on." She smiled at the pair, "I am proud at the one that did Impress. She will be a great Dragon... just like you and Talath are great Dragons."

Zekida was late - horribly late - to the hatching. It was what happened when the hatching was for dragons and you worked with whers, she supposed. She'd had a shift on watch last night and...well, when you can't hear the dragons' humming, you're unlikely to be prompt, no matter how interested you are in wobbly little dragons.
She finally awoke - more because of Zekisk's grumbling than anything - and dressed quickly. The wher, of course, protested strongly, giving her handler a very irritated look. Dragons loud. Zekida gave her an amused look and she remembered that was not a valid argument. Also shiny. Prance prance, all in the sun. Zekisk's go blind. Blind and deaf, then what happens? No, Zekisk think Zekisk's must swear off dragons. Never see them again. She sounded both stern and worried.
Zekida gave her a little smile. I'll be fine. Hush. Be back in a bit. With that, she scampered off to the Sands. It...was bright outside, and for a few moments she wished she'd listened to her wher. She was not accustomed to the heat of the sands or this many people crowding around. At least she couldn't hear - must be a terrible murmuring going on right now. Clearly something had just happened - the tension was clear without a sound.
Zekida scanned the sands, eyes wide. The white wasn't overly remarkable. Cute, yes. Tiny, most definitely. But nothing dramatic. The green... oh wow. That was...that was certainly an interesting green. She was about to tell Zekisk about it but the wher, sensing that intention, quickly cut her off. Zekisk cares about no silly shiny dragonfluffs. Zekisk surprised Zekisk's can care about dragonfluffs. Zekisk figured Zekisk's would be dead already from nearness of dragons.
Zekida wasn't quite sure what had prompted this dragon hatred, but she figured it would pass soon enough. She looked back to the sands. There was...that was a lazuli, wasn't it? She whistled quietly, impressed. Quite an interesting hatching, wasn't it? Finally, her gaze reached the mothers. One of them was...clearly not pleased. Shards, she wished she could hear right now... She stared helplessly at the sands, not wanting to ask someone else what was wrong and hoping to just figure it out on her own.

Jallis was trying to figure out the best way to feed her dragon without putting him down. It was a rather silly task and she really should just set the white down but...shards he was just so cute and he was hers! When the bowl of meat nearly fell to the ground for the third time, she finally set down the white and crouched to his level as she handed him finely cut bits of food.
Her head snapped up at the amethyst's cry. Oh no! There was only one reason she could think of for a dragon to be making such a horrible noise on such a wonderful day. A sad little mew left her and she looked around as if hoping for someone to approach with a sign, telling her how to help. Why would you help, Mine? It is not your dragon. Or my sibling. Was it a dragon? I suppose it must have been, if you say it was, because you would know. His had been around much longer than him, after all. He carefully plucked a slice of meat from Jallis' slack hand.
"B-but...it's. It was a baby and now it's d-" She couldn't finish, could feel herself tearing up. Oh shards, this was just awful. "Can't you...can't we do something?"
Like what? Mine, can you please give me another piece of meat? I am ever so hungry, JallisMine, and you did just stop.
About to ask how the dragon could possibly think of food at a time like this, Jallis stopped. The dragon. Her dragon. Oh, how could she have so quickly gone from bliss to this distress? She realized she was crying and swiped quickly at her cheek. Well what if... I mean, you are sort of like her kid, right? You're at the same clutch and stuff. You should tell her you love her, or something.
Shyith gave her a look that made it clear he thought she was being quite odd. But I do not love her, JallisMine. I do not know her. Oh, but His looked so distressed, and he had a feeling he would not be given more of the meat (which he was now enjoying analyzing more than eating - it was his first taste of anything, after all) until Jallis felt better. I do love you, though, Mine. So I will see if I can assist.
The white paused, gathering his thoughts and words, then probed ever so lightly at the amethyst's mind. He paused and then, words even more cautious and quiet than usual, he spoke. JallisMine is ever so distressed at your pain and wanted to know if there is any way we can help. You are not my mother, but you are a mother of my clutch. You stood guard over my egg along with my mother and kept warm on the sands with me. If there is anything you need of me, clutchmother, or Mine, we are by the meat station with the meat. There is a rather lovely patch of sands here; we are the ones standing by the sand that is a little bit more white than the sand next to it, but I think it also has almost some green in it? Maybe it is crushed up eggshells.
Jallis had been listening to the white's words and his bit about mothers had made her cry harder. But then he...wait, he was going off about sand and... She looked at the ground, not even seeing what on Pern he was talking about. Why didn't he just say he was the white? They were the only white pair over here right now... Oh yes and I am white. Though I have a bit of green, I have noticed. Like the sand. But I do not think my green is crushed eggshells. Ha ha. It was a rather awkward joke, one which amused him but which he was quite sure would not amuse the grieving mother. Feeling quite unsettled by the entire proceedings, he quickly withdrew from the amethyst's mind and took the bit of meat which Jallis had thankfully gotten ready.

Candidate Kiona
Kiona was gazing at the eggs with silent wide eyes. She watched as the others Impressed and saw the dud. She felt a horrible loss for the one who was going to Impress. The girl started to cry, it was so emotional. Her only hope was that egg wasn't hers. She had her freedom stripped from her while young, forced into drudgery and finally Roxi and her Garnet had come. For a new life, a better one.
The candidate tried not to think on it too much. Her eyes were down in a submissive manner except to the unhatched eggs. Her eyes had a glint of excitement in them. She didn't say much or do much. She just stood there and waited.
Candidate Novar
Novar observed with an interesting eye. He was in no mood to be disappointed. Nym had brought him here and it was the best thing she had ever done. Too bad he didn't see it that way. He wanted to be alone, he liked it. Pesky humans. Why were there dragonriders anyway? He knew the answer to that one but he didn't want to admit that he did. Everything wrong happened when he set foot in this camp. He thought he had no friends around Rindell. He thought everyone hated him just by his looks and what he was.
Novar decided to try to put his small paranoia aside and focus on the Hatching.

It was time for the eggs belonging to the last amethyst to hatch it seemed, after all one of the two at least was there and willing to come from its shell. The egg quaked and rattled, wanting desperately to see the light of day. Hairline fractures started to tangle a fine web across the shell, and finally, finally the egg shattered along those lines. The reddish hued amethyst picked up her head, shaking it and crooning loudly. Yes! Yes she had made it out! Chittering the little female got to her feet shakily and trumpeted at the top of her voice.
Ha! How could that egg think she could be caged? She was uncontainable! Sniffing the air, the amethyst rolled her neck letting her wings unfurl from her sides. Oh it felt good to do that, to stretch out. A long, whip-like tail snaked behind her as she turned her head this was and that to observe her surroundings. Funny things, and there were shells on the sand, and there were bigger versions of herself...and there was mother of course.
Eying the other egg from her dam, the amethyst trotted over, trilling and head-butting the shell. A soft keen made her stop though, Kinurninth looking over at the older Amethyst that had clutched with her, knowing that the left over egg was a dud as well. The newborn amethyst shuttered at the though, the little creature beating the sand with a foot angrily. It wasn't fair! It just wasn't fair! She shrieked in defiance, running from the egg and then turning on her heel to roar at it again. How dare it die!
The uproar quieted soon though into a small little keen as the newborn hatchling shivered and shook her head from side to side. There was noise in her head, a drumming now that was telling her to do something. She didn't want to take her attention from her dead sibling, she wanted to properly mourn that loss, but something else was taking all of her attention. Giving one last keen the amethyst tore herself from her spot and started trotting along the line of candidates left over. There were so precious few but surely Hers was here among them. That drumming in her head was only getting louder, closer, faster, heavier, more, more, more, more.
You. Yes, it's you. You're Kindeleth's PrettyKiona. Don't worry, we will never be caged, I refuse to allow either of us to. We will be free, we will be reborn into something greater than either of our prisons could ever hope to make! My sibling might have failed to see this, but I do not. We do not. Come please, this sound...this hunger, it's beating in my head. We must go now.

Kiona looked down in shock, not saying a word for a few moments. There was a small red Amethyst baby looking up at her. The girl looked around, thinking Kindeleth may have been mistaken. Surely, she didn't think she deserved anything but a green. Kiona pointed to herself. She could not believe it! She was still in shock as she tried to say something but all that came out was gibberish.
Kindeleth rumbled a chuckle as she gently nudged Kiona towards the feeding area. The now, Amethyst Weyrling had a major responsibility, a lot more than than the others. She finally squealed in excitement.
"I do apologize for my silence. Oh my goodness! Yay for me! Of course, lets go feed you, my Kindeleth." she liked the sound of that; my Kindeleth.
Kindeleth chuckled again.
Its quite alright. Don't worry so much, Mine. I don't make mistakes. I am Yours and your are Mine forever. That's how it should be, PrettyKiona. Kindeleth crooned affectionately. She tilted her head a bit and nudged her hand.
Kiona had no idea how to feed Kindeleth. She finally saw Roxi and waved her over.
Candidate Novar
The boy saw Kiona Impress an Amethyst. Novar glared at her in jealousy. Of course, he would not Impress one of those because he a boy but at least a Garnet would suffice. He approached one of the two eggs unhatched and touch one....Cold. A sense of anguish came over him as he touched it.
One of these eggs could have been his. A tear ran down his cheek as he sat before one of the duds and cried. It wasn't a normal cry. It one of those gut wrenching ones. Then again they have been someone else. That didn't matter. Two lives were lost, two duds...It was unfair! So totally not fair! He not only cried for himself but those who waited for a baby and they didn't even make it out of the shell!

Capelth's other egg, seemingly unnoticed, had cracked down both sides and split open, revealing a dark dragonet that seemed content to sit in the remains of his shell, tail twitching. The ebony raised his head, eyes swirling, before bouncing over to the candidates, knocking over his Lazuli sister in the process, who hissed. The Ebony ignored her, and found His rather quickly. The pair walked off the sands. The Lazuli was the only one left. Standing up from where her Ebony brother had knocked her over, she snorted angrily. She was the best! It was only fitting that she, the Lazuli Queen, would be the last to find hers, because of course... there he was! M'ro! Your beautiful, rare Selinyth would like to be fed now! Aren't I beautiful?
