Last night was a disaster just outside the candidate barracks. A guy was so well beaten up by a girl and he couldn't even fight. Well the other one couldn't really fight all that well but at least she could throw a punch. Linda was pissed, and felt very embarrassed as well considering she was a candidate too. The fact that a fellow candidate could not even defend himself properly, especially with the rebellion being out there... He would get his dragon killed and that wrangled her deep. So the next day she decided to give him some well needed training even if she had to force it on him. It was past dawn though, nobody needed to get up as early as her to interrupt her own training after all.
After finding out what room he was in, well after she sicked one of her fire lizards to stalk him to find out. Linda had gotten to the room and started to knock on the door. At least she knew his name from lessons. "Hey you um... Liam. Get out here if you want to stop being such a weakling." If he wasn't gonna come out fast enough however she was ready to bust in and drag him out to force him into at least some training.

Liam was laying in bed, staring up at the ceiling, reliving last night over and over. He couldn't believe he'd led Ooma get the best of him, make a fool of him, and insult the love of her life! Groaning, he rolled over, only to jerk back from the pain of the black-eye he was currently sporting... a last token from Ooma's jealousy.
He returned to laying on his back, one eye swollen shut, the other glittering angrily. He was barefoot and barechested, but he had on a pair of cut off pants to make shorts. It was spring, and the barracks were hot, so he tried to wear as little clothing as possible during the hot hours, which were just not beginning to start.
As a knock sounded at his door, Liam leaped to his feet, clenching his fists. What if it was Ooma, come back to thrash him again?! But... no... it was Linda, offering to... give him fighting training?! Liam threw the door open. "Okay!" He said brightly. "Let's get down to business!"

Cayin was, for once, not asleep either. Truth be told, he knew Liam was moping and it made him too upset to sleep. So it was that he was lying in bed, peeking at Liam from under the covers in worry. He was taking this whole thing pretty hard. Cayin didn't think it was really much of an issue. So he got punched by a girl, big deal, he thought it was pretty cool of him not to hit back. It showed a level of control that Cayin found admirable... even if Liam hadn't intended it to be that way.
He glanced at the door as the sound of knocking reached his ears, slipping out of bed after Liam. Unlike the shorter male, Cayin was fully dressed; the heat of the barracks didn't compare to the heat of the furnaces back at the Hold and so he barely noticed the stifling warmth of the room. He cocked his head to the side at the enthusiasm Liam showed for the idea of fighting. It was a tad unnerving and for a moment Cayin hoped it would be just a passing fancy. Nonetheless he followed quietly behind the pair, figuring it could be interesting to watch, at the very least. He wanted to make sure Liam was okay afetr all.

Linda obviously didn't have to wait long for Liam to suddenly get out there... At least he had enthusiasm, which was good she could work with that after all. But as she looked down at his body... his body looked like it could work in a more agile and evasion type of style but his lack of clothes didn't help him much. "Like your enthusiasm, but I am a hard trainer and will push you past your limits. Also I suggest getting some clothes on that have padding but try to make it also breathable material."
But she noticed Cayin, seemed to be his counterpart and Linda couldn't care less really. But he seemed fully clothed, who knows she might have interrupted something but fighting always does. "Once your dressed meet me out in the Weyrbowl so we can start. Will be slow at first to learn the basics but Should be at least able to do decent with your fists." With that she started to head to the area she had already sought out for the training session. It was near the water in the weyrbowl, where there would be a sandy area next to it and water to cool off and help with bruises.

Liam immediately nodded, drinking in every word Linda was saying. He wouldn't let Ooma get the best of him again! This was going to be great! Grinning at Cayin, he threw on two layers of shirts, and pulled on a pair of pants he used when riding his runner bareback, since they were padded. He hastily threw on his boots, and grinned at Cayin again.
"You should come watch!" The skinny male threw a fake punch. "I'll get tough enough to take on anybody!" He didn't wait for his lover's answer, instead trotting out of the barracks and toward the Weyrbowl. He scanned the area for Linda, and when his blue eyes found her, he jogged over. "Okay! I'm ready! What do we start with?"

He really didn't know how he felt about this. He liked the shy, wimpy Liam that tried so hard anyways. What if he became a fighter? What if he ended up getting hurt doing this? Cayin pulled on his boots and followed along behind, not really saying anything as they made their way down to the meeting place.
"Don't go overboard Li..." He finally mumbled before shuffling over to find a place to sit. Well, maybe he would learn a thing or two as well. Faranth knew he had the muscle to do something, he just lacked the drive and technique to do it.

So he hurried as well, but he got some decent padding especially if he gets shoved on his butt. Linda gave a nod and merely got into a sturdy type stance.. Her feet spread out to give her balance and solidity against the ground. "Most fighting is practice practice practice, the more you practice and use it the better you get. This type of stance is a sturdy one that helps you with defensive ways... but first we need to talk about weaknesses." Linda glanced over at cayin and then back at Liam.. sure liam had a ton of weaknesses right now but with work and practice most of them would go away.
"Now some weaknesses.. like open spots and not blocking.. or for guys you know where... There are ways to learn and train to protect those areas and no longer be weaknesses. But the greatest fighter will still have a weakness... For you it is Cayin, someone can attack him to force you to jump in front and take the attack.. Me it is my fire lizards. So either they need to learn how to fight or you need to learn how to defend and deflect. Your first and always weapons you have are your fists. Knifes and all sorts of other things can be knocked away.. So try to hit me with a punch."

Liam nodded, listening carefully. He watched her spread her feet, noting how she placed each one so he could copy her later. "Practice, practice, practice..." he murmured, nodding to Linda. He could do that. Just... who would he practice with? Cayin, maybe? Well, hopefully Linda. After all, she was the one training him. He hoped she would make time for more lessons.
Weaknesses? Okay... he could admit to that. So, block the open spots? Got it. But how did he block? Linda didn't go over that... Shards. He could feel himself beginning to sweat. Fighting really wasn't for him... Hey, wait! Cayin was a weakness? ...well, yes... he could see where Linda was coming from... Shards. "Okay, defend and deflect, got it." Again-- how?! She wasn't explaining how he was supposed to do any of this! And then she told him to try and punch her. ...this was a bad idea...
Sinking back into the solid stance he had watched Linda take, he raised his fists to face-level to protect his face from another hit. Defend and deflect, defend and deflect... Lunging forward, he aimed a (rather weak) punch a Linda, hoping like hell it would connect and he'd do something right for once!

Cayin listened attentively, or at least as best he could before a wayward leaf distracted him as it danced through the air. He had heard the jist of it though; practice, something about weak spots, and punching h- Wait a minute! Punch a girl?! He jumped up.
"Hit a girl?" He said out loud, obvious uncomfortable with the idea. He had spent the last few Turns at the Hold, surrounded by the non-violet, calm ladies that were raised there, so the idea of hitting a lady was just wrong in his mind. Liam didn't seem to see the problem though. He should step in the way... "I could be the punching bag..."

Of course Linda didn't tell him how to defend or deflect... it really wasn't something she could just talk about but rather show Liam if he was going to do it fast enough. She merely raised an arm up to block the rather weak punch. "That was a block, its hard to do unless you watch your opponents muscles and try to anticipate where the will attack." She wasn't able to speak more on the subject as Cayin spoke up about hitting girls and offering to be the person hit. "Yes he and you can practice together but right now I need to show him stuff. The rebellion will have girls who will kill you if you hesitate anyways so toss away those thoughts."
She turned towards Liam and went to throw a punch back at him.. not a very strong one and she tried to slow it down so he could hopefully see what she was talking about. Or at least try to block it "try to block my punch quickly now or else it will hurt." Linda had spoken up right before the punch.

She blocked him! Liam made sure he watched how she did it, raising her arm to deflect his punch away. He nodded as she spoke, trying to drink everything in. "Watch muscles... anticipate attack... Got it!" He turned to Cayin and smiled. Poor Cay. He was so noble and chivalrous. Well, sometimes. Liam grinned and winked at his lover when Linda responded, and turned back to her.
When he turned back, he was moderately surprices to find her throwing a punch at him! Well, it was kind of slow, so he quickly raised an arm to try and block it, as she instructed. Hopefully he would be able to deflect the blow as he was supposed to be doing. If not... well, then he really did need these lessons!

Cayin cocked his head to the side. Girls would try to kill him? Well that just didn’t sound right. Girls were generally so sweet and soft and loving. It was hard to imagine one trying to kill him. Then again, he had gotten his fair share of angry ex-girlfriends…. On second thought, girls could be pretty scary sometimes. He quieted down, intent to watch again, at least for the time being.
He winced as a punch was thrown at Liam. The man was willful, strong in a way, but he bruised so easily! If anyone should be punched it should be Cayin! He could handle it, Liam was just going to get hurt. “Li…”

Linda did try to make her punch as gentle as possible as it connected to Liam's arm that he tried to block with. Whether it hurt or bruised.. or not was seemingly up to his tolerance and just how much she was able to tone it down or not. But she ignored whatever might happen as she pulled her hand back and continued on with the lesson. "Deflecting is like blocking, but you just push their attacks aside and not take the brunt of it. However punching and kicking, you don't want to use your fingers or toes. With Kicking you either want to use your heel or the outside edge of your foot. While punching you want to do a staggered thing with your fingers. The joints above your knuckles hit then in a split second make your fingers collapse so your knuckle does sort of a second hit with more power." As she spoke she tried to show what she was saying with her own hands. There really was no way for her to show him like the before things and this way he had a visual aid in hopes of his training.
Now what else could she teach him, well it would be the last thing in this training... Oh yes... she started to grin and got back into one of her stances, just standing there though she seemed to be light on her feet as she tried to keep on her toes. "Okay that is most of which I can teach you right now, all you need is a partner to practice with which I am sure Cayin would be happier to do. Rather then me, besides I don't know if I would hurt you worse or not. But right now my last portion of the lesson... Time to show you how to use your opponents weakness against them. Its easier for us smaller folk to use against the bulkier stronger kind but use your imagination to figure out other uses... Now run at me and try to put your full weight behind a punch." At least they were on sand, he wouldn't get that hurt as if they were elsewhere.
