Widelmath sighed as he sat in the Weyrbowl and quietly watched all the people walk by. He couldn’t help but worrying that something was wrong with more than a few of them. It was a warm spring day and His was in the records room studying which left the young opal with nothing really to do, and no one but T’ris’ firelizards for company. While he enjoyed the firelizards they weren’t very talkative. Widelmath’s tail twitched slightly and he slowly lowered himself to the ground. He might as well make himself comfortable while he waited for his rider to finish studying. It was still pretty early but he knew it would be lunch time soon and he wondered if he would have to eat alone today.

Abyrath lazily circled in the air, spiraling downwards slowly. Several moments passed before she landed and it took another moment before she noticed Widelmath.
His unique colorings caught her attention. And she crept toward him. She was not a threat to him or anyone really being less than half the opal's size.
Hello! I'm Abyrath. I don't believe we've met....?
The purple dragon was exploding with cheery and friendly and shivered with excitment. Hooray! A new friend!

Widelmath raised his head from his paws and watched as another dragon approached him. He chirped curiously at the small dragon and tried to remember if he had ever seen a dragon so small before. Hi I-I-I'm Wid-Wid-Widelmath. Widelmath’s normally shaky voice was a little more so now that he was meeting a strange new dragon. Don’t worry Widelmath. I’m sure you’ll be just fine. T’ris had felt his dragon’s fear level start to raise as the small female approached him. From what the young man had found from the records, Widelmath was the last Opal to ever be hatched, or clutched for that matter. Widelmath sat up so that he wasn’t lying down anymore and looked down at the little female curiously. He wondered if her size was normal, or if there was something wrong with her.

Abyrath hesitated as she sensed the opal's fear. Such a reaction was very new to her, and she froze mid-step. Her eyes widened with confusion and worry. What had she done?
I'm nothing to fear. You are much bigger and stronger anyway. I'm happy to meet you. I've never seen such a handsome hide!
Abyrath was flirting and hoping to comfort Widelmath with compliments. She thought he wad quite adorable despite his fear. Maybe he'd warm up to her? She would be his friend. He could trust her. And honestly- even if she wanted to hurt him (which she never would!) how much damage could a dragon of maybe 900 pounds and 13 feet do? He was twice her size or more!
You're cute!
She sang as she bounded forward, carefree.

Widelmath sensed Abyrath’s hesitation and saw the confusion and worry in her swirling eyes. He listened to her words and lowered his head slightly and sniffed at her. He had never seen her before, at least not that he could remember. He jerked his head up and away from her again at her words. He had never heard anyone call his opal hide handsome before. He turned his head and neck so that he could look at his own hide and wondered if he saw another stripe. You’re fine Widelmath there isn’t another stripe. The one turn old opal snorted at his rider’s words, but shook his head and forgot about his “nonexistent” extra stripe. There was something strange about the little amethyst. If Widelmath had known how to flirt he might have recognized that Abyrath was trying to flirt with him.
But as it is Widelmath had no clue about those kinds of things, and didn’t show any aptitude to learn about them either. He jumped a bit and squeaked at her words as she came bounding towards him. This was one clueless dragon. U...um... He had no idea how to respond. He had never really been one to go and play with others and he was most Definitely NOT the first to try something new. And this was definitely something new to this dragon. He stood and backed away from Abyrath a few steps and looked at her curiously, trying to figure out what on Pern was going on. He was so used to the other dragons ignoring him that when Abyrath showed such interest in becoming his friend he had no idea what to do. The only “friends” he really had here his rider and his rider’s firelizards.
