As soon as the sight of waves and sand came into view, Ayumu began to whine anxiously. M'ril glanced down at the canine he was carrying with a frown. That was odd. He was surprised at her response, though he supposed he shouldn't have been. He had found Ayumu tossed in a bush at the river's edge, after all; it wasn't that surprising she would have a lingering fear of water from the ordeal. But she had been so open and friendly around people (and even dragons) since he had rescued her that it hadn't even occurred to him it would be a problem.
He sighed, ruffling the canine's thick coat of fur before setting her down on the ground. That was another thing--he would definitely have to give it a trim before summer came, but today was just so nice and sunny that all he wanted to do was relax and enjoy himself while giving Ayumu and Rahath a chance to get out of their weyr at the Rebellion Outpost.
Rahath had been following overhead, and seeing that the canine was alright for the moment, the lazuli-colored dragon dove down and landed on the beach, kicking up sand everywhere in the process. Oh, darnit, she said innocently. Now I guess I'll have to take a nice, long swim to get all the sand off my hide.
M'ril laughed at that, knowing full well she'd enjoyed every minute of that. "You go on ahead. Looks like Ayumu's still too scared to learn to swim. I guess I can stay with her; relaxing on the beach's as good as swimming." Rahath slipped into the deeper water as M'ril settled down at the point where the sand dunes ended.
Ayumu had scarcely moved from his side. He was lucky that she was so well-behaved; she still had some training ahead of her, but overall, the canine pup was remarkably well-mannered, even if she was too timid to approach the waves. It was nearly half an hour before the pup got up the courage to leave M'ril's side and explore her surroundings. She was still keeping a healthy distance between the water and her, but M'ril watched her as the canine sniffed at shells and seaweed.
