The young boy of 14 turns was running down the white sands, in his dragon's shadow. "Higher! Higher! Abyrath go go!" He cried into the air, trampling through the shallows of the crystal water. I'm flying Mine! Oh! You should feel how wonderful it is way up here! Ka'mond stopped running, panting slightly, his sides heaving with the strain, but with laughter too. "Come down then. I think we could fly alittle. I don't think anybody would care..." The tanned boy waited for his dragon, watching her spiral down and land so gracefully. Nothing could change the way he loved her, the sensation that he felt as he caressed her warm, smooth hide. How dearly and carefully he preened the dead skin from her body, or how lovingly he oiled her. The small amethyst flicked her wings open, holding them carefully as her rider climbed onto her. "I bet we could go between..." He murmered. No, Mine. Not yet. We don't want to get hurt, esspecially since we have a future with the Rebellion. Without letting Ka'mond reply, Abyrath sprang into the air, throwing back her wings, and screaming into the crisp air. Her leathery wings beat the air easily, slicing it, and climbing higher. There were no limits to flight. This was their time, so quiet, so treasured. Chores would wait, yes. Nothing and noone would take this time from them.

Dalrian's path along the beach for his morning walk had been very much uninterrupted for a while. When a young boy almost ran over him chasing the shadow of a very very small amethyst he dodged him fairly easily.
Settling his hands on his hips he watched the boy and the dragon for a bit. He was about to be content to go his own way when he saw the boy mount an obviously small dragon, and heard the boy talk about betweening and his stomache dropped to his feet.
"oi!". Apparently he was not heard because they took off. He whistled as loud as he could and motioned for the youngsters to land again. Ordinarily he tried to stay away from weyrlings now but he couldn't stand by with something as serious as that. And if the weyrlings hadn't even had the sense to not attempt betweening... What class was this young pair.
". Amythest beauty. Come back down to earth. I need to have a word with your rider."
He knew even if the rider couldnt hear him the dragon herself would hear him and hopefully enough of kelaths presence still lingered within him to leave him with at least the feel of authority. Ex riders did still have some position in the weyr even if he didn't think that of himself.

The amethyst saw the man, heard him calling them. Almost relucently, she spirled back down, angling gracefully toward the sand. It took several moments, as she took her time. Neither felt rushed, but they were very serious. Ka'mond raised an arm, holding it in a greeting above his head, then cupped that hand to his mouth. "What's the matter?" He cried, his voice mostly lost in the wind. When they finally landed, Ka'mond half swung, half fell off of his dragon. Then he strode toward this man who called to him. "We..We were only taking a break. We'll get back to our chores right away..." His toe dug into the sand, and he felt shamed to have been caught goofing off. Abyrath and he did this as often as possible, but never had they been caught. They weren't slackers, they just... Had to make time for themselves. What have we done, Rider-Friend? Abyrath asked, innocently.

He frowned and crossed his arms. The little amy was certainly taking her time. She WASN’T old enough then… the newest batch of weyrlings should have been around the six month mark… but he knew for a fact they hadn’t had the lessons yet, and the amethyst was too small to be from one of the older classes. Waiting impatiently he fixed the boy with a stern but not mean look.
“Chores are what you’re worried about? Putting all that aside young man… Your dragon… she was from talath’s clutch before she went to the rebellion right? The windbreakers?” He had no doubt of it and he bit his tongue to not be angry with the boy. He knew all weyrlings tried things on their own, but some things were too dangerous. The flying alone was natural for a dragon. Flying with a rider… That required safety and that was definitely something this young pair did not have.
“Your class has not been through the paired flight lesson yet. I suggest you not do that again. It could result in your dragon’s injury, or your death, in which case we lose the both of you. The same with betweening. Don’t even contemplate it until it’s been properly done. Weyrlings and their dragons die every between lesson, and they’ve been taught how to do it.”
He hated having to lecture, but a spot of trouble may just help this kid remember what was at stake and why the weyr was run the way it was. The rules were in place for a reason after all.

Ka'mond came across the sands, and dug his toe in the coarse ground. He felt so dumb. Uneasily, he scratched his neck, listening respectfully to the man's lecture. He knew that was stupid. Betweening was dangerous, and he didn't really mean to be so careless. Both rider and dragon were impatient, dieing to be able to prove themselves. It was hard being so outcasted. They had so much to give, but so little knowledge. "I'm...I'm sorry... I wasn't thinking.. I just.. I want to be able to do something..You know?"
Abyrath bent her head to Dalrian, blowing a warm puff of air at his face. I wouldn't have taken us between. I wouldn't risk that. Even if we are nothing more than a mutated bonded pair, we still have a purpose. There was a sharp bitterness in her reply, but her voice was still gentle and innocent. "It won't happen again, sir. It won't happen again..." Ka'mond raised his own head, focusing his blue eyes on Dalrian. This had to stop! They had to be something more than a burden...

"I realize with those idiots up there now and with how J'degar and some of the others are about mutations little one. Mostly that's not the case here in trelis. Every dragon and rider here has a purpose. But you're not a full dragon and rider yet. You're a weyrling. You'd do well to remember the rules. They're in place for a good reason. If you want to get stronger there are other ways to go about it."
He patted the amethyst gently when she puffed air in his face. This is just for your safety, kids. He shook his head and clapped a hand on the boys shoulder.
"Look. Don't let this upset you, but learn from it. See the reasoning behind it." He gave the kid a light smile. "Now what about those chores???" He was joking of course, franath knew he and his classmates had run away from their chores often enough,

Ka'mond nodded, listening to what Dalrian said. If there was one thing Ka'mond hated, it was waiting! Esspecially waiting for change or growth or learning...
Abyrath folded her wings closer to his violet hide, blinking at the sunlight. We understand. It just feels like we never seem to get far in anything.. But.. we'll try. We will be the best. There was almost impatient confidence in her words, and she shifted excitedly.
Any advice from a rider to us? Like other than following rules? We are willing to learn, dieing to do something!
Ka'mond turned to smile at Dalrian, and he took Dalrian's hand in a friendly gesture. "This won't happen again."
Oh Fareth.. Chores! Ka'mond groaned, playfully. "Guess they won't do themselves..." He grinned.

Dal smiled at the little amy. She reminded him slightly of Eulurth actually. Eager to do something. That little blue had driven lene almost insane when they were alive, always wanting to get stronger and push the boundaries. He wondered if some of the ways they had compromised would work for them as well... She was small enough that the river WOULD provide enough resistance to her wings.... extra sandbags and an almost hovering flight pattern may help them out in the flight lesson once it starts...
J'degar's injuries should be the only thing that were holding them up. They'd still had no word from G'lwein about when he'd be back or if he'd found the rebels. There were four outlying islands and one peninsula off the southern coast he'd been checking... Shouldnt be too long before he was back though.
"They won't at that son, and depending on the chores, you may find yourself wishing you'd done them in the first place..." He shuddered with memories of him shirking doing the dishes at the kitchen one morning. They'd not touched a single dish since and when time came tomorrow he had had to clean every dish in the place for two days.
"I know of two things that will help you get stronger. You can use extra sandbags and instead of letting yourself actually fly just try to lift yourself off the ground a foot or so. That'll help your wing strength. Also, If you go to the river, find a nice deep spot and use your wings to propel you against the current. That should get you nice and ready for your flight lessons. You may even impress J'degar." He gave the Amethyst a wink.
