Actual:
Xanthus was a woodcarver, and a fairly good one, at that. He'd grown up in a village outside of Trelis, apprenticing to his carver father as soon as he was of age. No one was surprised when the boy excelled in the craft; he'd been watching his father since he was old enough to sit up on his own, and the wood seemed to shape itself at his slightest touch.
Xanthus made tools, furniture, and pretty little ornaments, adorning himself with his creations through the two holes he'd had punched in each ear. He was confident, cocky even, and his self-assured swagger drew several pairs of eyes as he grew up. He was a bit of a playboy, sleeping with a handful of women, even when he claimed to be devoted to one. Most left, furious, when they learned of his two-timing. Others stuck around for a while, figuring this was the price of a relationship with him, before moving on.
Janice, the woman who would later become his wife, was the exception to all of this. Six turns older than him, she was not swept off her feet by his boyish charm. She liked him, yes, but he wasn't the only pretty young thing in the village. Xanthus was used to women being wholy devoted to him, and having a woman act as he always had, taking others into her bed while in a relationship with him, made him desperate to have her for his own.
After a rocky turn of courtship, the two were married and agreed to be faithful to each other. Neither were particularly good at monogamy and the two strayed frequently. They tended to be passive aggressive, responding to infidelity with infidelity, one-upping the other until they were both so hurt that they swore once again to be completely faithful and monogamous.
When Janice found herself pregnant, she sat Xanthus down and had a long talk. The baby was his - she was sure of that - and she wanted him to really commit to this family. The baby wouldn't do well if they were constantly hopping in and out of other peoples' beds. Xanthus agreed and became a doting partner throughout the pregnancy. When Anthen was born, he fell in love with Janice all over again, adoring her for what she had accomplished.
For a while, they were a loving, perfect family. Then, Janice got word that her father was gravely ill. A tearful goodbye preceded the departure of Xanthus' wife and child as they moved a continent away so Janice could care for him.
A month after she left, hardship struck again. Xanthus was attacked while his village was being ransacked. A blow to the head blinded one eye and wiped months from his memory, making all time before that somewhat spotty.
As dragonriders and weyrfolk from Trelis searched the village for answers, Xanthus was found. With nothing left for him there, Xanthus left his former home and moved to Trelis, intent on seeking a dragon or wher.
Remembered:
Xanthus remembers being a woodcarver, being well-liked, and having a girlfriend. Well...he remembers having many girlfriends, but Janice stands out. What he doesn't remember, though, is everything else. He knows they were in love but he doesn't remember being married. He doesn't remember the constant back-and-forth betrayal that typified their marriage. He doesn't remember Anthen.
From what he can piece together, it seems reasonable that Janice was killed in whatever raid left him without his memories.
