This was not fair!
It was cruel... The bronzerider had been cruel. To... to give false hope of her dream... The only thing Mae really counted as worth living for....
The harper's chest rose and fell, her body burning from anger and shame. If he had seen something in her, then she'd failed...
Mae hardly waited a second after knocking on S'bel's door before she pushed it open. Her eyes glanced around the room, raking the area for the man and dragon.
"S'bel?" Shards, her voice quivered and she sounded weak. Her 'lie' was dieing. Her illusion was faltering...
"Maerath?" It was mostly sadness in her voice, crackling with anger. What had gone wrong? She had been herself- or atleast the person she wished she could be...

He should have expected her. After all, it was he that had given her hope, Maerath that had given her hope... and this had been Maerath's clutch. Surely she would have wanted to Impress to one of the children of the dragon that had Searched her.
S'bel was sitting at his desk, writing up reports when she knocked, and then came in. Pushing back his chair, he turned, pity etched in his features at the sadness and anger in Mae's voice.
"Mae," he murmured, sinking to his knees and drawing the girl into a hug. "I'm sorry."
Maerath rumbled from across the room. Uncurling himself, he moved so his head was next to the pair of humans. Do not be sorry, S'belMine. And do not be sad, nor angered, ChildMae. None of mine children were destined for you, or you for them. But I know there is greatness in your future, and this is just one hatching of many to come. Do not be sad. Be yourself, and good things will come.
Closing his voice off so only S'bel could hear him, the bronze continued. After all, Mine, she found you, and you are almost like a father to her. S'bel turned to stare at his dragon, his left eye still rather swollen from his fight with J'dol. Was Maerath right? Had he somehow become a father-figure to Mae?

Mae felt her anger just... disappear. Both bronze and rider were not to blame. When first gathered into the man's arms, Mae was stiff. She never really had known any pair of arms to wrap around like this. Strong, warm... Comforting. Her little taunt body relaxed and she did her best to get her arms around S'bel's neck.
Her head turned to look directly and Maerath and for a moment she smiled. That smile faded but she did not frown. "Maerath." She addressed the dragon as she knew he liked. "When... when I touched the eggs... There was something.. that made them question me.. Either I had potential but was just not the one or... Or the thought needed more thinking... I..."
Mae didn't know how to explain how confused she was. Yes. Be yourself was what everyone said... But Mae wasn't even sure who she was!
One cheek was against S'bel chest, and then she sort of hesitantly pressed her face into him. It felt so safe right here... held close to this man whom she figured understood...

S'bel felt the child's stiffness disappear, and smiled as she wrapped her arms around his neck. Maybe Maerath was right, after all. The bronze only snorted, shaking his head. Of course he was right. Wasn't he always?
The bronze turned his gaze on Mae as she addressed him, her eyes locked on his. She smiled briefly, but it faded. The dragon snorted again, and his eyes swirled.
All dragons must question, little one. He told her solemnly. As must all people. It is a part of nature, a part of life. Even I, as old as I am, must sometimes question what I know. The one thing dragons do not question is who is Theirs. You were not. Not this time. But as I said, this was the first hatching of many. We now have two golden Queens, as well as many Topaz Queens, such as Mine own Chahaturth. There will be more hatchlings for you to Impress to, child.
"I know it's confusing," S'bel murmured, drawing the girl close. He was moderately surprised when she nuzzled into him. Looks like Maerath was right after all. "In time, you will discover all you need to know."
Maerath rumbled. In life, little one, there is much that we do not understand. S'bel smiled down at the girl. "But when it seems like all your dreams are crashing around you, we will be here, filled with hope and pride, supporting you every step of the way." In time, you will find your way, little one. Just be you, the way you are, and everything will turn out right in the end.

Mae looked at the face of Maerath and nodded, now watching S'bel. She knew that this was the truth. This was real. No none of this was ever a lie.
Her blue eyes stared for a long time at S'bel, secretly comparing his features to her own. They were nothing alike, to her dismay. But she could pretend? Yes. S'bel was her father. No one would tell her differently. She could now have a fantasy where she was not an orphan, but instead the child of a brave and fair man...
"I think I understand now. It was not a problem of mine or of the eggs or of anyone. It had been fate that decided it was not yet the right egg or time..
"T-thank you." she couldn't manage another word. To think she was coming here to blame her failure on the pair! It was horrible....
