Name Iskra
Pronunciation IS-krah
Age 37 turns
Season Born in Spring, 165th turn of Interval
Gender Female
Sexuality Heterosexual
Appearance Iskra is taller than many women, standing just under six feet, and she has the bulk to match. She is not a slender, petite woman, and never has been. She does have a lot of well-toned muscle, for riding a dragon is a lot of work, and besides that, she likes to keep herself in good shape and good health. Her everyday clothing is practical and usually well-worn leather and the like; she does have several dresses more 'befitting' of a Weyrwoman, but she typically only pulls those out on special occasions when she needs to look the part. The rest of the time, she much prefers breeches and boots to slippers and gowns.
She is not a typical beauty, but she is attractive in her own way, more handsome than pretty, with strong features and a prominent nose. Her golden-brown eyes are small and narrow, and she tends to appear annoyed or tense to others, even when she's not. She has a series of old scars from her days as a candidate that tend to be mostly hidden by her clothes, though when she dresses in more revealing gowns, they are certainly obvious enough. There are eight of them in all, in parallel lines from her neck to her upper arm, the remnants of a confused hatchling's claws. The smallest and shallowest ones mark her neck, and the claw-marks gradually get longer and more prominent along her collar and shoulder, the last resting on her upper arm just below her shoulder.
Her hair is long and thick, a sandy brownish-blonde in color with pale highlights. It reaches to just below her shoulder-blades when left free, though she prefers to tie it back in some way to keep it away from her face. It's generally twisted into a braid, or tied in a bun if she plans on flying. Aside from a couple hair-clips, she wears little jewelry, preferring to save it for special occasions, like her dresses.
Personality Short-tempered and easily annoyed, Iskra is not the easiest person to get along with in her bad moods, but she has mellowed out quite a bit since Impressing Maeleth. She is rather proud, and gets offended easily, but she tries not to let it show. She finds it very important to be polite and respectful to people, especially those who approach her own rank, no matter what she privately thinks of them. Her reaction when slighted tends to be passive aggressiveness rather than blatant insults, but she knows when to let it go as well.
She takes pride in her accomplishments and may come off as either confident or arrogant. She is particular proud of her scars, viewing them as the tokens of a hard lesson learned, and refuses to hide them, though she doesn't particularly draw attention to them either. She is not as impulsive and reckless now as when she first got them, and she is much more willing to think before she acts. She has developed a lot of patience, especially with Maeleth's soothing presence to help her. She is sensible, down-to-earth, and very organized. She hates messy areas and keeps her own rooms clean and neat by habit.
Iskra may not be the most outgoing person, but she does like most animals. Though she never really got around to bonding a fire lizard, the more she learns about the huntyres, the more she likes them, especially since bonding her own Darija. She is a little less fond of humans and finds it difficult to make friends. Diplomatic and respectful, she can handle; genuine friendliness is a little harder for her to do when meeting new people. She is not overly bothered by this, though; she has always been more of an introvert and likes having time to herself when she's not buried in work. Maeleth, of course, doesn't count--she plainly adores the gold and never objects to hearing the comments she has to offer.
Iskra has always been a hard worker and obedient to her superiors, even in her days as an apprentice and candidate--perhaps more so then than now, since there are fewer people who outrank her. She is very focused and quite intelligent, though she's never been particular fond of reading or writing, however she's competent at both. Her sense of humor tends to be clever but sarcastic, often at the expense of others.
Iskra has never been a very maternal person; the one child she did give birth to has been mostly raised by foster parents, and she chose to take a trip between the last two times she became pregnant, rather than go through birthing again. Maeleth has enough mothering instincts for both of them. She doesn't have a whole lot of experience with long-term relationships; she's had a few flings over the years but she only ever had one serious relationship. It takes a particular type of man to impress her, one who isn't driven away by her sharp tongue or intimidated by her position.

History Journeywoman Harper Krayla had scarcely walked the tables when she was sent on her first assignment, to Apolla Hold. It was there that she met a handsome young holder, Istelborn, who quickly managed to woo her over. Within a few months, it became clear that Krayla was pregnant, but she had come to care for Istelborn, maybe even love him, over the months she had spent at the Hold, and when the Holder asked her to marry him, she agreed. Not wanting to be called away from her new family by her job, she readily sent her resignation to the Harper Hall and settled down as the wife of a Holder. Their first child, a boy, was born nine months later, and he was named Istakray. He was soon followed by one sister, then another, until they had a comfortably full house of seven children.
Iskra was the third child born to Istelborn and Krayla, and the second daughter. Istelborn was a kind man who doted on his daughters and treated his sons with respect, and Krayla was a loving mother. Iskra was significantly less outgoing than most of her siblings, but with six of them to choose from, she rarely wanted for companionship, even if she had few friends outside her family.
She was an active and adventurous child, and once she realized that she didn't want to spend the rest of her life in Apolla Hold, she went to her mother, who urged her to join the Harper Crafthall. Iskra was happy to go, and at thirteen turns of age, she apprenticed as a harper. As an apprentice, she quickly discovered she had a talent for crafting instruments, as well as (to a lesser extent) playing them, though she never developed a notably good singing voice and she always dreaded the chores that involved copying, as she lacked the patience to deal with it and found it dreadfully dull work.
She spent two years at the Hall, and when she was fifteen, the dragons came on Search. She went to meet them, along with the rest of the apprentices of proper age, and she was stunned when a hefty blue dragon showed particular interest in her and his rider asked her to be a candidate. She quickly agreed, finding the idea of riding a dragon much more exciting than being a harper, and returned to Trelis Weyr with them.
She arrived on the hatching sands when the Hatching was announced and watched excitedly as the eggs starting to crack open. No matter how she tried to draw a hatchling's attention, though, they all seemed to ignore her. As the Hatching began to draw to a close, one confused green still wandered the sands aimlessly; half-trying to help it and half-trying to Impress it, Iskra reached out to try and guide the hatchling toward her.
The green's eyes went red suddenly, and it lashed out at her outstretched arm instead as she bent over it. The green's claws narrowly missed ripping out her throat; instead, they latched onto her collarbone and shoulder, doing massive damage nonetheless. She was later told she was lucky to escape with her life, in between admonishments of how foolish she'd been in the first place. She didn't even get a dragon to show for it--shortly after Iskra was taken to the Infirmary, the green successfully Impressed to another girl.
During the weeks she spent bed-bound after the Hatching, Iskra came to realize how foolish and reckless she had been, and vowed never to be so again. Fortunately, she was not banned from standing for her behavior, as she had clearly learned her lesson, and in time her wounds faded to scars. It was still another three years before she successfully Impressed, however. The latest news in the Weyr was that a gold egg had been laid by Gold Mivinth, a testament to the fact that Thread would be returning in less than a decade.
Iskra once again stood on the sands, watching excitedly as the eggs began to crack, but this time her attention was mainly focused on the golden Queen egg as it slowly cracked open. Finally, once nearly all the rest of the eggs had hatched, the golden head appeared and the hatchling made her way out of the remains of her egg. She appeared calm, but the fierce whirling of her eyes belied her urgency as she inspected the remaining girls, and Iskra was shocked, nevermind that she'd been hoping for it, when the golden hatchling stopped in front of her and stared at her face.
You. You are the right one for me. We go good together, yes? I am Maeleth,[/color] the gold told the ecstatic Iskra. She had just turned eighteen.
Iskra and Maeleth went through Weyrling Training as easily as could be expected, and in another three years or so, Maeleth was ready to mate for the first time. B'sar, a bronzerider whose dragon was clutchmate to Maeleth, had been courting Iskra for weeks prior to the flight, though she had given him little encouragement. She was surprised to discover the depths of her emotions after his bronze caught Maeleth, however, and as their dragons became weyrmates, so did they. Not long after, Iskra discovered she was with child, and though B'sar was happy to be a father, Iskra was less enthused about being pregnant. She went through nine miserable months and quite happily handed the baby boy over to a foster mother.
Scarcely a year later, B'sar died in a betweening accident and Iskra was left alone with a child she didn't particularly want. Every so often, she remembers to pay a visit to her son, but for the most part, he seemed to be happy with the rest of the weyrbrats in the creche. Twice more in the nine years since then Iskra has gotten pregnant thanks to Maeleth's flights, though both times she opted to take a trip between rather than go through labor again. She has not had a serious relationship since then, either, though she has tried with several of the riders whose dragons caught Maeleth, however, it never seemed to work out.
More recently, the entire Weyr mourned when the Senior Weyrwoman, Sahelli, died, along with her gold, Mivinth. Iskra mourned no less than the others, though she did so quietly, for Sahelli had been a mentor to her and Maeleth. Being the oldest living weyrwoman, she fully expected to become Senior Weyrwoman the next time Maeleth rose, but she could not predict the young queen Loraketh when she had not even risen at all yet. She was surprised and dismayed when the young queen rose before Maeleth and her nineteen-turn-old rider Inali became Senior Weyrwoman over her. She still nurses a bit of an unfair grudge against the other goldrider, but she tries not to let it show; her first loyalty is still to the Weyr, and its riders should stick together, right?
Nothing lasts forever, though; almost as soon as Maeleth's latest clutch was laid on Trelis's sands, Iskra's son and several other young children were kidnapped from the Hatching Feast and held for ransom as an attempt to rid Pern of the new colors. Though Bekran and the other children were recovered without harm, Iskra decided Trelis Weyr was becoming too dangerous for her dragon and her son, and soon after Maeleth's clutch hatched, they transferred to Telgar Weyr.
Having almost lost her son, Iskra finally realized how important Bekran was to her; the poor boy was nearly smothered by her attention for the first turn they spent at Telgar, though eventually Maeleth convinced her to give him a little more space. Though he is now old enough to stand for clutches and lives with the other candidates, Iskra still keeps a closer eye on him than she had before the move.
Iskra was one again relegated to the position of Junior Weyrwoman, a concept that annoyed her even more when she learned of Loraketh's death and how close she had come to being the Senior of her home Weyr. By that time, however, Maeleth had risen to mate again, laying her second gold egg. It hatched, and the young queen Majorith chose Rikula as her rider; Iskra's time was now spent in training the young pair.
Then the time came; word came from Trelis Weyr that Weyrwoman Iirla had died, along with Maeleth's firstborn golden daughter. The Weyr was left without any golds at all, and since Iskra's Maeleth was formerly of that Weyr, she was selected to return there and at last take her place as Senior Weyrwoman. Rikula and Majorith were selected to go as well, to serve as her juniors. She was much less enthused when she was told she was to train Rikula to become Senior as soon as another queen egg was laid, at which point Iskra was to return to Telgar. Though on the surface she agreed with her orders, she is not at all certain she plans to obey them when the time comes. After all, why should she leave the place of Maeleth's birth when she finally got the position she'd long been dreaming of?

Color CodesBody: D43D1A
Speckles/Neck feathers: 608341 and 5A6351
Appearance This little girl is small now, but within time she will grow to be on the larger size of her color. With a mostly reddish, brown plumage this girl stands out among most other Forests. Her feathers are speckled with small bits of gray and green as well. While males of this species have a crest on their heads, females have extra feathers around their necks. On this little female, her fuzz will grow out to be a mixture of green and gray plumes, making it almost look like a collar since it is a stark difference from her reddish body.
Personality Well, in a word, this girl is feisty. A chick after her mother's heart, this Forest knows who she is and what she wants. Never will she ever be indecisive about anything, and never will she back down. When she wants something she gets it, end of story. If you're stupid enough to keep it from her...well, she'll make your life miserable. Iskra is certainly going to have her hands full with this one.
Dragon
Name Maeleth
Pronunciation MAY-lehth
Age 19 turns
Type Dragon
Rank Senior Queen
Size 46 feet long
Color Codes F0E404-Base body
BAA505-Stripes
F6EE62-Belly
Appearance Maeleth is average-sized for a gold, but she has a slender, long-limbed body with an attractive build. Her wings are particularly long and broad, giving her a lot of strength and endurance in the air. Her neck and tail are both quite long, while her legs are a bit shorter, though still within average for a dragon of her size.
Her base body color is a bright, sunny golden shade, though there's a strip of lighter gold running from the underside of her throat, down her neck and chest to her belly, ending at the base of her tail. She has striking, striped markings in a much darker gold that looks almost bronze. They cover her back and tail and top of the neck, and even extend partly along the 'forearm' of her wings, though the wingsails are unmarred.
Personality Slow and lethargic on the ground, some might even call Maeleth lazy, but she's not, really. She just prefers to conserve her energy, and she doesn't see the point of making a big show of things most of the time. She is, above all else, a laid-back, easy-going dragon. She doesn't worry about tomorrow or yesterday, or anything at all, it seems. She just takes things as they come, one day at a time. She has a remarkably soothing presence, and she takes joy in helping others however she can. She has certainly been a calming influence on her rider.
Where Iskra lacks that maternal instinct, Maeleth has it in spades. She loves children, and eggs, and hatchlings, and she's usually the one who'll remind Iskra to go see her own son. She is neat and fastidious, much like her rider, and likes to make Iskra make sure she's in top physical condition. Maeleth can be rather vain, and enjoys a good flirt with a bronze or the occasional brown.
She is definitely outgoing where her rider is not, spending lots of time around other dragons. She is not a gossip, though, and she can be very discreet, if only because she'll probably forget whatever secret she's been entrusted with in a few days, if she doesn't trust it to Iskra's memory. She is not completely extroverted, though, and she values the time she does get to herself. In keeping with her typical calm nature, she is not overprotective, even when guarding a clutch, and fortunately for Iskra, is not as difficult to control as some golds.
Mind-voice (If applicable)
Calm down, Iskra. Everything will turn out alright someday. You'll see.
True to her personality, Maeleth's mind-voice is calm and soothing, brushing softly against one's mind like waves. It has shades of that trained harperness to it that Iskra's does, though the dragon's voice tends more towards a low tenor version of Iskra's alto.
