The question didn't surprise Aristide in the least; it was one he got a lot when introducing himself and Zexx. This man at least seemed genuinely curious, which was more than he usually got from other people. On occasion, Aristide had heard of other blind people training fire lizards and huntyres to act as their eyes, but Aristide had never had a pet flit as a child, and a canine seemed easier to obtain and train, anyhow.
Aristide gave a shrug, but he reached down to stroke Zexx's head proudly. "Well, yeah. It's worked out well for me in the past. And it's certainly better than rotting away in the lower caverns, letting other people do everything." He always had had a rather large independant streak.

“A canine bein’ eyes huh… interestin’.” He scratched at his chin, his eyes regarding both the man and his pup with more interest now. He had more respect for the man now that he knew Aristide was putting forth an effort to be independent; it was something he didn’t see often with regular weyrfolk, much less the blind or deaf.
“How d’ya teach ‘im t’see for ya?” He finally asked. He had trained his canines to respond to a number of commands, but he didn’t quite understand how the dog could actually be his owner’s eyes. The canines didn’t bond like firelizards or huntyres, so it simply baffled him.
