R'hard, I'm bored. And you're not being much help. Kaith complained. He was back at Trelis in his weyr, but that didn't stop him from bothering R'hard. The brownrider pointedly ignored his dragon.
Oh, come on. You're still not talking to me? You know that's just silly when I can see in your head.[/color][/i]
R'hard gave a long-suffering sigh and went back to trying to ignore the dragon. He had come back to the Gather mostly to get away; he'd done everything he'd been planning to do and bought everything he had the marks to buy, but he wanted to get away from Kaith for a while. If the brown could decide to chase sharding sub-queens on a whim and stick R'hard with a ranking position when he won, he could entertain himself for a few hours.
Hah, tell me it didn't make you forget about Aela for a while, though.
R'hard groaned, no doubt drawing stares from some of the people around him. That is so not the point, Kaith! You knew Kayath was a Junior Queen! Catching her means more responsibility and more work for both of us. You hate work--you're the laziest dragon I know!
R'hard was busy ranting at Kaith, and not paying much attention to where he was going, which is why he didn't realize he was about to walk right into someone.

J'dol whistled lazily, arms crossed behind his head as he wandered lazily through the gather. He still had some purchases to make, but there was plenty of time left so he wasn't in a hurry. Oh, J'dolMine. Do pick up some new oil will you? it was almost weird to feel the topaz in a happy mood. He couldn't remember a time when she wasn't grumpy anymore. All in all, he was glad she had finally risen and gotten the tenseness out of her system.
It was really too bad their morning after had been so short, he would have liked to learn a little bit more about R'hard before the young man had to truly begin his new duties. Why not go find him? J'dol stopped walking and looked back towards his weyr, where Kayath was resting contently on the ledge. Distracted, he didn't notice the very person he was thinking about until he was suddenly bumped.
"Oh! Hey R'hard!"

He was so distracted by Kaith that he bumped right into someone, and he had to take a step back to see who it was. R'hard suppressed a groan. Great. J'dol was just about the last person he wanted to see at the moment--there was a reason he'd left as soon as possible after the flight.
"Oh. Hi, J'dol," He nodded at the topazrider, wondering whether to say anything else. He was normally pretty friendly and outgoing, but well, he wasn't exactly at his best at the moment. He was too busy feeling sorry for himself and wondering what sort of extra responsibility he'd be expected to take on now that he was Junior Weyrleader.

"Great weather today huh." J'dol replied, not really noticing R'hard's discomfort. He didn't know the young man was thinking about his new position. To J'dol, today was a day like any other. "Absolutely perfect for stall wandering."
Giving a relaxed stretch, J'dol glanced over at the nearest stall and grabbed up a couple meatrolls of some sort. Tossing down a few marks to the vender he held one out to the brownrider. "Here, want one?"

R'hard gave a soft sigh when it became clear the topazrider was not going to get the hint that he wasn't in a talking mood. He was about to just come out and say he wanted to be alone, but Kaith cut in on his thoughts again. Hey, R'hard, I know I just ate the other day, but I was getting peckish and thought about grabbing a herdbeast. Maybe two. Only that's always so messy, and since you're talking to me again, how about a bath and oiling later?
Then again, there were more annoying things that he could be doing, and he supposed it would be bad form to alienate the Junior Weyrlord so soon after winning the flight. He put a half-hearted grin on his face as he glanced at J'dol. "Yeah, I suppose it is."
He stopped walking when J'dol did, and took the meatroll when it was offered. "Thanks." He ate quickly, and in silence; as soon as he was done, he asked, "So, anything in particular I should know about this Junior Weyrleader rank?" He couldn't help it; it was weighing on his mind, and he wished Izanycorth would rise already so he'd at least have an official Weyrleader to turn to.

J'dol lived in a fantasy world where everyone always wanted to talk to him, so the very idea that R'hard didn't was alien to him. He grinned as the brownrider took the offered food and wiped his hand on his pants to remove any remnants of the snack. Tossing his arms back behind his head again, J'dol regarded the young man with curiosity, taking a moment to think about the question. "Ahh the rank business has been on your mind, huh?" He gave a warm smile, "The weyrlingmasters probably gave you a quick rundown of the Weyrleader's duties right?" He tried to think back to what he knew were the 'Leader specific duties. Since Trelis had been lacking in a Weyrleader, Iirla and himself, alongside the wingleaders, had been taking care of much of the weyrleader duties. "You and the future weyrleader will be in charge of the wings mainly, the military part of the Weyr, to put it simply." He glanced over at R'hard, "It'll be a little weird at first... having to learn all your duties and responsibilities, but you won't be alone." It felt like forever ago that J'dol had learned he'd be taking on the role of a Weyrwoman. He had always wanted to leader... though from the front of a wing, not a council room. The sheer amount of work had come as a complete shock and, if anything, J'dol was glad to have another set of hands to help with it all.

Apparently subtlety went over J'dol's head, and he was as oblivious to R'hard's mood as ever. Oh well, it was probably just as well. R'hard gave a shrug. "I'm sure the Weyrlingmaster went over it during lessons, but, ah..." His face was turning red, he just knew it. "Kaith and I weren't always exactly the most attentive students.
"I have a basic idea of what's expected," he added, not wanting to seem stupid, "but I have a feeling it's not going to be as simple as it seemed then. Especially since we've barely graduated. I just wish we had more experience to fall back on."
He gave a small sigh and brightened a bit when J'dol mentioned he wouldn't be alone. "That's true. Izanycorth will be rising for the first time soon, too, right? So we'll have a Senior Weyrleader as well." At least that was one flight he was sure Kaith wouldn't be participating in. He wasn't sure if Kayath would be offended if the brown chased Izanycorth, but R'hard would be sorely tempted to ground the dragon for life.

J'dol chuckled as R'hard went red. He himself hadn't always been that attentive in class, especially with the more boring lessons. Kayath had often reprimanded him mid-class for being distracted. "You're right, it wont be easy." J'dol shrugged. With everything that was still going on, R'hard would be thrust into a role he would need to learn quickly. "But I'm sure you'll do fine." The topazrider felt a little bad about the obvious worry R'hard had. He wondered if there was a way to boost the young man's confidence. A grin spread across his face, "Besides, I doubt you can be any worse than our current Weyrleader!"
"She should be," J'dol agreed, glancing to Izanycorth's ledge. The real question was wether she would rise on time or not... Kayath had been almost a Turn overdue on her flight. Well, if she didn't rise, they would just have to continue dealing with the Weyr on their own. If she did rise... well hopefully their new 'leader would have a bit of experience. "Hopefully we won't have to wait too much longer. It'll be nice to have a bit of a break from work."

The brownrider heaved a sigh. "That's what I was afraid of."
J'dol mentioned the current Weyrleader, and R'hard hesitated. He knew T'rian had been taking care of the Weyrleader's duties since Loraketh's death, but he'd been wrapped up with weyrling lessons and his own life in general that he hadn't paid much attention to how things were being run. It wasn't like he'd joined the wings yet, after all.
"I kinda wish now I'd been paying more attention to this sort of thing," he said wryly. "Did it take you long to adjust to things?" He loved Kaith, lazybones that he was, but he wondered if it was easier or harder riding topaz, or junior queen.
As far as Izanycorth was concerned, he was sure she would be rising soon. The gold was already four turns old, and probably overdue. Any Weyrleader was fine with him, as long as Kaith didn't chase.

J’dol chuckled, “It’s not that bad, really. And worst case scenario, you only have to deal with it until Kayath rises again right?” Though when that would be J’dol had no idea… she had been so overdue for this one, hopefully the next came roughly on schedule. Well… whatever happened, happened. Having an actual weyrleader for people to see was an automatic improvement over what they currently had. T’rian had, in a way, been acting Weyrleader… but all he could do was occasionally help out and give advice. For the most part, he had been too busy caring for Inali to lead the Weyr. So, in truth, Trelis had been Weyrleaderless.
“I think you worry too much, R’hard.” He teased. “I thought the same thing when I first started too, but a few sevendays and you start to get a schedule down… after that it’s just a matter of rolling up your sleeves and doing what you need to do. You know what I mean?” Of course, most of the Weyr seemed to think that all J’dol did was slack off and flirt, but he had simply adjusted well to his own schedule.
“Rumor has it Izanycorth will rise within the next few sevenday. After that it should be smooth sailing for all of us. At least I hope…” His grin turned into an overplayed pout, “All this leader business is taking my time away from the ladies!”

J'dol's words did reassure him a bit, thankfully, though R'hard still didn't much care for the responsibility that came with the position. Much like Kaith, he could be rather lazy given the chance and preferred to let others handle the hard work. Oh well, he thought. What's done is done.
"Yeah, I guess that makes a lot of sense," R'hard said with a shrug. He kept a straight face as he continued, "No offense to you or Kayath, J'dol, but I will be perfectly happy to let someone else take over when she rises next." He looked forward to the day he could be a regular wingrider--not to mention that J'dol wasn't his type; he preferred women, awkward post-flight events notwithstanding.

"Oh no offense taken," He said with a wave of his hand, not at all bothered that the new junior weyrleader wanted nothing more than to get out of the position. He himself had wished to get out of it before... and from time to time he still wished he could.
"You're lucky you know." He added quietly after a moment, "All you need to do is keep Kaith away when she rises again and you can go back to what you want to do. Iirla and I though... we're Weyrleaders for life." Not that it was all bad of course, it was just stressful sometimes, especially when Iirla fell ill. "I suppose I can't complain though. I get plenty of opportunities to wake up next to some nice looking rider."

R'hard cocked his head to one side thoughtfully at that. He'd been caught up in his own self-pity the last few days and had never really given much thought to how the other leaders felt about their position. Then again, it wasn't like he knew J'dol very well or had any reason to wonder if he ever resented his position. He usually seemed like such a cheerful guy, he wouldn't have expected it, though.
"Yeah..." R'hard grinned. "I know it's an important position and all and I probably shouldn't complain. Seems kind of selfish when people were disappointed at not winning." He deliberately ignored the last sentence, as well as Kaith's snickering in the back of his mind.

Even J'dol had his moments of self-pity. Where other riders got to experience the thrill of Threadfall and drills, set goals and have dreams about where they might end up, J'dol would forever be a member of the queen's wing. Sure, his position gave him power, but it also took more freedom than many likely believed.
"Ah, they'll get over it. No doubt they'd complain too as soon as they saw all the paperwork waiting for them!" He grinned, moving to use R'hard's shoulder as an arm rest. He couldn't help but want to torment the party pooper.
