A brilliant topaz popped into the weyr, chirping. She was oblivious that it was dark inside and out, and the person she was looking for may be sleeping.
Her neck had a letter wrapped around it. She chirped again, offended no one came to greet this queen.
Still receiving nothing she hissed, pouncing onto the bed of furs. Get up!!
A queen should NOT be a mail-flit!
Her eyes were whirling red. Humph. What a rude man.
-- The letter reads. Dear R'hard, Abyrath my amethyst has had an accident. She broke her wing and has clutched in Rindell. We are forever loyal. We hope to be home soon...... While here, we've run into Aela. She said to tell you hello... And that you would know what that meant.... Maybe you could tell Asaara my news? Tell her I miss her...

Things had been even more hectic than usual at Trelis since the Weyrwoman's death and all the fallout that had resulted. R'hard had been on his feet pretty much all the time since, dealing with the changes in the wings resulting from Vl'kan's step down from Weyrleadership and S'bel's new position as Junior Weyrleader, not to mention his own change in rank. He dragged himself into his weyr at what felt like an obscene hour of night and flopped onto his bed with a groan.
It seemed like it was only seconds after that when a young, noisy topaz flit betweened herself into his weyr. He was too exhausted to do anything but ignore the flit; whoever it belonged to could sharding wait until tomorrow to talk to the new Weyrleader of Trelis.
When the topaz began shredding his bed-furs, however, enough was enough. He sat up with a snarl. "Alright, already, alright! Gimme the letter." He didn't wait for the fire lizard's response, he just snatched the paper from around her neck and started scanning it.
Hmmm, not from who he had been expecting...he recognized Abyrath's name, of course, as unlike Kaith he did at least make a token effort to keep track of the kids his dragon sired. Oh great, another dragon who would be out of action for awhile. It didn't help that they would be supplying eggs to the enemy as well, but he couldn't blame Ka'mond for that. It wasn't like he could do anything about it anyway.
His face twisted at the mention of Aela's name, unsure whether he should scowl or smile. It was good to know she was still safe, though still with the rebellion, apparently...but he still missed her, especially with the Weyr's recent events, and he didn't like being reminded of that when there was nothing he could do about it.
He wracked his brain for a hint of who Asaara could be. The name was vaguely familiar, but he couldn't put a face to it. Perhaps she was another weyrling? Ooma would probably know if that was the case...he had already started towards the door when he remembered how late it was. Probably, this could wait till tomorrow...but he was never certain when he'd be able to talk to Ooma, considering the weyrlings' training schedules, and really, she'd be as likely to be awake now as any time, since dragon bellies didn't like to remain empty for long at that age. Well, he could at least try, very sneakily and quietly, to talk to Ooma, and if she was asleep, he'd just try to find her later.

Star chittered angrily before nodding to herself. She hardly cast a second glance before popping between again.
---
"Calibath...I'm tiiiired." But I'm not sleepy!! Can't we play? Or eat?
Ooma rubbed her eyes and sighed. "Ok. Fine, lets go to the kitchen then." She reached to open the door, nearly tripping over the large dragonet dancing about her feet.
Then Ooma nearly ran into a figure, a man in the dark. Calibath squeaked, hissing in surprise. It was several seconds before Ooma's eyes adjusted. "R-R'hard? Are.. are you ok?" He didn't look ok. He looked like he'd collasp right there. If Calibath hadn't woken Ooma, worry had her awake now...

R'hard stepped back as a door suddenly opened in front of him, and he blinked. Oh. It looked like Ooma and Calibath were awake after all. That was good. "Lucky you were up already, I was actually hoping to find you awake," he said, a very small smile on his tired face.
He reached his left hand out to her, which was still clutching the letter he'd received. "A really bothersome topaz flit gave this to me a little while ago. I was hoping you could help me out. Do you know if there's a weyrling named Asaara? It sounds familiar, but I'm just not sure." He didn't mind letting Ooma read the letter. There wasn't anything particularly personal or incriminating in there. Though he had temporarily forgotten the bit about Aela, but even if he hadn't been suffering from sleep deprivation, he wouldn't have considered it worth mentioning.

Ooma smiled too, giving the crumpled letter and extended hand an odd glance. "Asaara.... I.. I think she was in my classes and impressed the first dragon on the sands....? Very pale skinned..." Curiously, she took the letter, replacing the space with her hand.
Nothing in the letter was a shock, but... Aela? Who was...? Ohoh! Kaith talked about her.... You... you and Aela.... If Ooma had been wide awake, she would have been much more offended, but really she was confused. "Who is... Aela?" She finally asked after a pause. Maybe the letter was crinkled and she was reading it wrong. "Come here, we can talk alittle easier inside."
Calibath trotted back into the room, and Ooma motioned for R'hard to follow.

R'hard nodded at the mention of the pale-skinned girl. He did seem to recall watching someone like that Impress at the Hatching. It wasn't everyday you saw an albino woman, after all. Then again, he'd thought there'd been two such women in that clutch...
It was only after Ooma spoke up again that he was brought out of his thoughts. "What? Oh..." That was right, the letter had mentioned Aela as well. He wasn't exactly at his best at the moment, but he didn't see anything wrong with telling Ooma about her.
He followed her inside, trying not to think about how it would look, if anyone saw the Weyrleader going to a weyrling's room, especially with her dragon still so young. It was highly unlikely there was anyone else around to see, anyhow. He kept his voice low, just in case. "Aela...she's an obsidianrider in the Rebellion. We were candidates together, and good friends as well. It's just that I haven't really heard much from her since Talath and Kaith's clutch hatched; she left not that long after. I've only met her in person once since." He had a frown on his face, thinking about it.

Ooma felt something like jealousy coil like a snake in her stomach, and her smile faultered. The letter was placed on a table. "It is kind of funny how I expected you'd tell me of your 'past flames' sooner..." Her words were said almost with a laugh, as if laughing at her own stupidity. Was this what R'hard had looked so confused, distracted and worried about? Was this Aela the actual reason R'hard had wanted to take it slow but he used her Impressing as a coverup? Mine, listen to how selfish you sound. You are acting like he purposefully cheated on you, which is not true. BlindMine! Look he frowns!
Ooma took a second glance at R'hard, feeling guilt mix sickeningly with her jealousy. "I'm... sorry I am overreacting, R'hard. This just... really surprises me is all..." How could she not trust this man? He was her friend, and Ooma believed more. Her heart was beating quickly in her chest. "I can tell this bothers you..." It bothers you too that he was flown by someone else! Calibath's voice chimed. Ooma gave her dragonet a 'don't you dare' glare. The dark colored green sat down, and sulked. "We should bring this out in the open. I don't want you to feel like this can hurt us. I won't be offended. I promise." Then she winked, and teased. "You can't get rid of me that easy."
And that was very true.

At the words "past flames" R'hard could do nothing more than blink. Shards, he'd thought he'd done a good job of implying they had just been friends and nothing more...then again, he did have to go and mention Talath and Kaith's clutch. Ooma wasn't an idiot, she knew how flights worked, and if she hadn't known Kaith had flown Talath before, she certainly did now.
He started to open his mouth as if to defend himself, though he had no real idea what he might have said, but after a moment of thought (perhaps including a word from Calibath), Ooma seemed to calm down. He still gave a little grimace, though.
"Well, for one thing, she had already left Trelis before I even met you. There was definitely nothing between me and her by that point, so I didn't really think it was worth mentioning."
Kaith interjected with a snort, Except for the way you kept pining after her for awhile, which didn't exactly seem 'friendly' to me.
He scowled. Shut up, Kaith. Then, realizing what that might look like to Ooma, he cleared his face and continued speaking. "Anyway, yeah, we were pretty close. I might even have had a crush on her." Possibly more, but he still couldn't bring himself to say the "L" word, so he put that out of his mind. "And of course, Kaith catching her dragon didn't exactly simplify things..." Although, unlike certain other sub-queens he'd caught, R'hard hadn't resented him for catching Talath.
Kaith felt the need to interject again. For all the brown was usually at least as awkward, if not more so, than his rider, when it came to R'hard's own relationships he seemed to see things more clearly than the human sometimes. I think that's enough, R'hard. I somehow doubt Ooma wants to hear that much about her 'rival'.
R'hard quickly decided that was probably a good idea. "Look, the point is, that's all in the past. And before we met." He felt compelled to stress that point. "And while I'd like to still be friends with Aela, I don't plan to take it any further than that. It's hard enough as it is, with her and Talath being in the Rebellion, after all."

Ooma shared a glance with Calibath. You've upset him. And he has said the wrong things. Do not read into him. You are a lot of woman to handle at times. You love him. So forget the past. You cannot change it. Move on, Mine. Move on.
Ooma smiled, her hand touching R'hard's cheek. "I understand. And I want you to know that I am not going to let this hurt us. I don't mind you both being friends. I can't control and don't want you to feel like I am. R'hard I lik-" Say it Mine. It doesn't bother me. I promise. "I love you. And nothing will make me think otherwise."
She lingered holding his hand, then blushed, worried she'd upset her dragon if they carried on.
"I believe Asaara Impressed a blue." Yes. The pale child impressed to a sweet brute of a blue. Mine'sLove she is not hard to find. She's pale and quiet. I'm sure she's around.
Calibath swished her tail, head bobbing with agreement with her own words spoken to R'hard.
