Mae did not feel like singing, besides how could she? She likely was over-reacting or being such a baby, but last night her tears refused to stop.
Today she'd covered most of her face with a rough cotton grey scarf. It hid some of her red eyes. Who was she?
Mae bit her tongue, staring hard at her feet. Shards... why was everything so confusing? It it.... made her happy life harder.
Scrambled... jolted... ruined, perhaps? No... she'd continue on, but how?

A dragon's song was a beautiful thing. Even days after the most recent Hatching, S'bel found himself wishing tht it was still going on. He loved the humming of the dragons' song, the deep, throaty call that they used to welcom their new bretheren into the world. Yes, a dragon's song was a beautiful thing.
Walking through the Weyrbowl, hands laced behind his back, S'bel found himself humming. It was a tuneless little song, just something he was making up as he went along, but it was something. Beside him, as giant as ever, Maerath padded along, eyes swirling calmly.
As the pair walked along, S'bel humming, Maerath snorting every once and awhile, S'bel noticed someone else was out and about. The dragon and rider remained silent. They had been bonded for so long that the pair of them did not need to speak at all. They knew each other's heart and soul so well after all the years, speach almost seemed to ruin the tranquility of it.
S'bel noted, however, that the other person out and about, a young girl, though she was obviously trying to hide it, was not tranquil at all. Feeling Maerath's nudge in the back of his mind, he knelt down beside the girl. "Here now," He said kindly, blue eyes concerned. "What seems to be the problem, hm?"

Mae whirled around, startled. Her blue eyes went from S'bel to Maerath, lingering on the dragon's form.
Her eyes fell to her feet, as she wondered what to say. She used to be so comfortable around men, but now nothing quite make sense.
"I'm... confused.. that's all.." Mae mumbled awkwardly.
Suddenly feeling like S'bel deserved more respect, she met his eyes with her own blue pair. "I'm Mae. Normally I am not this way... I am a Harper a normally happy Harper. But things are..."
Shards! She couldn't take how hard this was! "What's your dragon's name?" Mae carefully removed her scarf and forced a smile. The thought of his dragon added a bright glitter to her previously glassy eyes.

Ah, so dragons was the problem, was it? She had been completely upset until she got the courage to ask about Maerath. She was confused... S'bel suspected she had just wanted to be a Harper her whole life... but now she wanted to be a rider.
"Hello, Mae. I'm S'bel." He didn't mention that he was a Wingleader. The girl was skittish as it was, so he didn't want to run her off... not that it looked like she was going to go anywhere. She was gazing admiringly at Maerath, after all.
The bronze lowered his head, inspecting the child with one large, round eye. S'bel scratched the dragon's eye ridge absently, also watching Mae curiously. My name is Maerath, child. S'bel grinned. Anyone who knew Maerath knew that he preferred to be spoken to directly... but obviously Mae didn't know that.
Tell me. Why do you cry? The large bronze asked. He and S'bel already had their suspicions as to why, but the bronze was determined to get the true answer. Laying down with a grunt, he twitched his tail lazily. Ignore S'belMine. Talk to me, child.

Mae's eyes widen and she gaped as she heard Maerath speak in her mind. It took her a moment to make sense of her whirling mind. But now a true smile came upon her face. A dragon had spoken to her! A real true dragon!
The rush of excitement caused her two flits, amethyst and blue, to pop from between. They landed on her shoulders at twittered at Mae and the rider pair.
"I... I guess I am just... unsure of who I am..." She did not want to name names or point fingers but for silly babyish reasons Firogel's comment bothered her. "I was orphaned her as a child. No one will tell me who my parents were or why they left me... All I know is a weyrling named C'yin may be my half-brother... and... and..."
Mae frowned scratching her neck, giving each firelizard a pat. "Lately... oh it sounds silly and too hopeful..."
But Mae couldn't help but tell the anyway. "Lately I... I have been daydreaming of Impressing a dragon... being a rider, you know?"
Of course they did.. she blushed at her foolishness. "I had thought Harpering would be my life and that I'd be satisfied with my flits but... I'm not."

The smile that S'bel and, truly, Maerath, were rewarded with was worth every second they were spending with this girl. It seemed to take her a bit, but when she realized it was Maerath that was speaking to her... well, yes. That smile was worth it.
S'bel jumped as what he supposed were Mae's two flitters popped into the air. This caused the man's own two fire lizards to appear and land on his shoulders, his Lazuli, Vanda, on his left, and his green, Ivy, on his right.
Sitting down and leaning his back against a rock, he listened to the conversation between dragon and child while petting Ivy, who had just hatched recently. He made a mental note to oil her later.
Maerath hummed gently, listening to Mae's troubles. Who you are... The dragon trailed off. No one truly knows who they are, child. It is something we all must find... in time. As for parents... I do not have contact with my dam or sire. I do not need it. But a child like you needs an adult to love, and to be loved by. I cannot tell you who your family is, young one, but I can tell you that you can always find a new family wherever you go.
S'bel had a feeling he knew where this was going, and sighed. As for Impressing a dragon... that dream may yet still be recognized. I see in you many things a dragon would want. I believe you would make a dragon proud. You will make a good Candidate. And there it was. S'bel smiled in spite of himself.

Both Tiide (the blue) and Violette (amethyst) cocked their heads at S'bel's pair. They were both recently hatched, and very curious about everything.
Mae put a hand to her mouth, looking stiff, and well... shocked. Both lizards peered at Theirs, concerned.
"D-Do you mean it? Truely, Maerath?"
Now she was dizzy, almost deciding to walk away. The pair was... teasing weren't they? How unfair! How cruel!
But.. that thought didn't last long. S'bel smiled as well, and a dragon would not speak lies, would he?
Her chest rose and fell, and Mae couldn't help but smile again. Was this.... could this really...? A candidate! A real candidate! A maybe a rider as well.... Oh... things were looking up!
