Name: Kieru
Pronunciation: key-ERR-oo
Age: 16
Season Born In: Fall
Gender: Female
Sexuality: disdainful of those silly kids who think they're old enough for relationships already, and vaguely half hoping she'll be bisexual (asexual biromantic, and not aware that such a thing exists)
Appearance: Kieru is slightly taller and thinner than average, with a build that only looks feminine if her clothes fit right. She tends to keep her head tilted a bit forward so her face is hard to see, and her posture slouched just enough to make her appear less than confident and a bit shorter, at least when she's aware that anyone can see her. She prefers to wear dark blues and purples, avoids brighter colors and all whites, yellows and blacks, and will tolerate dark oranges and grays. She likes dark red as well, but tries to avoid wearing it very often.
When Kieru doesn't think anyone can see her, she stands a bit straighter so she can see better and stops staring at the ground, but doesn't deliberately straighten, so her posture becomes just slightly worse than average. She tries to spend as much time in the shadows and backs of rooms as she can without making it obvious that she's trying to be in them, and generally stay out of peoples' notice.
Much to her irritation, Kieru's hair is bright reddish orange, and quite visible. She leaves it as long as it grows, a few inches below her waist, but keeps a hair tie with her at all times so that if she really wants to she can tie it back or braid it and hide it under her shirt and a hat or hood. Her skin is pale enough to burn easily, making her wear long sleeves even in the summer, and her eyes are gray.
Personality: Kieru is cautious, reserved, and almost obsessive about learning everything she can, particularly about the people around her; how each person is viewed by the others, what they've done and what they're likely to do. Immediately she has no more specific goal to use this information for than to keep herself out of too much trouble, which isn't particularly difficult to do.
In the future, Kieru has vague ideas of doing something great, that will impact the world (or at least, whatever hold or weyr she's in) for the rest of time, but doesn't have any clear idea of what that something would be yet. In the meantime, she tries to learn everything she can, and assumes she'll be able to manipulate people with that knowledge once she has a goal. She hasn't actually tried manipulating anyone yet, though, beyond occasionally trying to talk her way out of trouble when she was a child, so doesn't have much basis for that assumption.
Kieru leans a bit toward feminist philosophies, being generally easily irritated by any generalization of 'feminine' behavior, traits, abilities or purpose/jobs, particularly the ones that she deems offensive or limiting. She hasn't put any particular thought into these ideas, though, and so tends to apply them to herself more than anyone else, and may or may not be offended at the same generalization being applied to any other woman. She is aware that people knowing she's a girl alters the way they treat her, largely because people don't always realize she's a girl at first, and thinks she'd prefer to be treated as a boy since she could then (she thinks) do anything she wanted, but isn't really sure how that would work, and is more likely to translate it into wanting herself to be treated "better" than anything about all women.
Kieru is unlikely to have any specific preference about most things, which gives a lot of people the impression that she's particularly weak willed or indecisive. She may be indecisive about some things, particularly when there isn't an option she likes, but in general this impression is wrong; Kieru is incredibly stubborn once she decides something, she just doesn't think most things are worth caring about. Even when she is being stubborn, though, it's more likely to show in the form of persistence than blunt demands or refusal, so not many people realize how absolute her decisions can be. She thinks this misperception could be useful, and appreciates it for that, but also gets annoyed when people keep trying to convince her about something she's already decided on.
Kieru wants to stand out from her siblings in some way and be special, but doesn't know how, and isn't entirely aware of that wish (or at least, the extent of it), so she doesn't act on it very directly, though some of her other interests and traits are influenced by it, particularly the feminism and vague ideas of 'doing something great'.

History:
Kieru grew up somewhat lost among her many siblings. Her parents loved all their children, but simply didn't have the time for all of them, and so the younger children were raised mostly by whichever sibling was oldest of those still living with the family at any time, with their parents caring, but distant. Kieru wasn't very bothered by her parents' distance, instead mostly wishing that her older siblings wouldn't go away, or would come back.
As Kieru got older she understood better why her siblings had to go, and did her best to stop minding. That wasn't very successful, and Kieru began hiding her emotions as much as possible, particularly after Kalem scolded her for complaining about Leren leaving when Leren was happy to go. Instead, she started asking everyone she could about every craft she could think of, her focus changing as a new craft caught her attention every week, and frequently declaring that when she was old enough, she was going to become the best at whatever craft she was interested in at the moment. This of course drew more teasing from her siblings, though her parents tried to encourage her in some interests and gently discourage her from others.
Eventually Kieru was old enough, and with her parents' encouragement, became an apprentice healer. Within a few months she became extremely frustrated as she failed to instantly learn everything, and more frustrated when she wasn't able to quit and become an apprentice in something else instead. It took most of a year and a half before she finally settled into her apprenticeship, and found that she was particularly good at talking to people and calming them down. She wasn't entirely pleased that her talent turned out to be something "so useless," but was glad enough to have found something she was better than most of her peers at that she didn't sulk much before diving into learning whatever she could about people and how people thought and reacted.
One master, getting sick of Kieru's questions, suggested that she spend time watching people, to learn more about how they interacted and how to apply what she'd been told but not really experienced yet. Kieru took the advice to heart, and soon began spending all her free time in corners or the back of rooms, watching people.
Kieru has been watching people for about two years now, and in that time has become steadily more reserved and better at remaining unnoticed. She's also developed the ability to put on a basic persona of cheerful, confident, calm, etc. with an idea of how most people will react, in order to get patients (generally) to stay calm, but doesn't really enjoy doing so even if she enjoys possessing the ability. She's not enamored with the idea of being a healer, but is okay with it.
