The sun goes down The stars come out And all that counts Is here and now My universe will never be the same I'm glad you came
It was a good month after the Gather had ended, and both Sub-Queen and Queen were heavy with eggs by now. Naturally, as the clutch's instructor, Alyara had been running back and forth between Iirla and J'dol to help with any preparations, also aiding the newly named Headwoman fit into her new job. It had been anything but boring, which was how Ara liked it to be honest. Too much time on her hands, and well she went a little off the walls with it all. She was currently carting around some papers and boards for the two Weyrwomen, Weyrlord if you asked one of them though, when she started to feel it.
It was a feeling that by now she was becoming quite accustomed to. After all, how many times had Avirith taken to the skies in a mating flight now? Too many to keep track of, that was for sure. Dropping the pile of papers, Ara looked around for the Green, her skin crawling. There. She had just tumbled from her ledge, pale hide shining an almost snowy color if it weren't for the darker wings. The rider's breath caught as she winged overhead, landing into the pens and scattering the wherries there. Lashing out the Green caught one, and Ara was forced to will her dragoness to stop. No, just blood it!
Hissing, the dragoness snapped her jaws, breaking off a piece and threatening her rider with the would be meal. However, Avirith obeyed, she always did in the end. Flicking her wings free of the dark blood, she screamed, her head neck stretching up into the air as her wings arced overhead. With one giant, hard wingbeat she was free from the confines of the ground. No one was a better dancer than she was up in the air, the so called Queens could only watch her in envy! She was the real Queen, and any male who thought otherwise was dead wrong.
You cast a spell on me, spell on me You hit me like the sky fell on me, fell on me And I decided you look well on me, well on me So let's go somewhere no-one else can see, you and me
Ara on the other hand, fighting hard to stay in control of her emotions, looked around blankly at the Weyr Bowl. "Shards, shards, shards! Avirith, you had to rise when I was in the middle of something didn't you?" She started to walk, but her vision was soon cut off by flashes of the Green's, and before Ara knew it she was right back where she started. Frustrated and effected more and more by the flightlust, the rider hissed and clenched her hands into fists. She wanted out!
Hovering mid-air, the Green crooned sweetly, and yet darkly. It was sunset, and the sky was fading into oranges and reds, casting shadows on her hide. Her eyes whirled a deep violet as she gazed across her Weyr. Come and take the challenge if you dare! This is no simple flight, winning a Sub-Queen or Queen takes stamina, but a Green takes skill. Let's see what you got, maybe one of you will be good enough to dance with me. With that, she cork-screwed backwards and headed out over the land.
Turn the lights out now Now I'll take you by the hand Hand you another drink Drink it if you can Can you spend a little time, Time is slipping away, Away from us so stay, Stay with me I can make, Make you glad you came

The roar of a rising female awoke the blue figure stretched on a ledge. Eldomoth lifted his angular head and let his strong limbs crouch. He had been called. He would answer. With an eager roar, a bellow of triumph, Eldomoth dove from his perch. He left himself fall, let the wind rush past him and the ground rise to meet him. Then his wings snapped out and he beat them to soar. His blue hide was outlined by sky, his muscles reflexing with fluid motion. He was ready. He would chase!
Let me join in this ballet. Let me prove to you I am worthy! My queen. You are much better than a Gold. No dragon could match your speed and grace! So let Eldomoth join your dance. Let us share this moment.
His words were truthful and charming. Eldomoth back winged and gained height. The blue neared Avirith, cooing and crooning praise to her.

Syphraelth ruffled his wings, happy that he could do it without causing more than general discomfort now. Apparently his healing was coming to an end just in time too, as the call of a green echoed over the bowl. He glanced back into the Weyr where his was working away. I will chase. Stay out of trouble. Was all he said before dipping off the ledge to follow Avirith into the sky. Don't push yourself too hard.
He swooped down over the Weyrbowl, grabbing a heardbeast in the hopes of a little boost. Sweet Avirith, I may be slow but I shall chase you in your dance! He called before taking off, making a swooping turn as she cork-screwed. J'degar took a deep breath as the first hints of flightlust washed over him, his feet automatically taking him out of his weyr and down towards the 'bowl. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he knew he should just wait for Assaila to return, but Syphraelth was already taking control of his mind. His expression was stern as he approached Alyara, a light nod of recognition the only greeting she received.
---
J'dol, darling, I really do think you should get up, The man in question grumbled, stretching out on his bed after what should have been an excellent nap. He had worked hard all day, why did he have to get up now?! Because that silly green is rising and you promised to be there. Now THAT got him up! Jumping out of bed, he only barely remember to pull on a pair of shorts before bolting out the door.
It didn't take long to find Ara, Kayath had given him directions, and once he was within range, panting slightly, he raised a hand. "Ara, come back to the weyr with me?" He didn't reach for her, he knew it would be a bad idea to force her. He was here though, hopefully that would be enough to keep her from getting angry at him. His eyes gazed over the other riders that were slowly gathering. On the bright side... if Ara did choose another, maybe he'd luck out with one of the flight losers!

It had been several hours since wing drills for the day had ended, and Ferrth was starting to get restless. He was uncurling from his bed and stretching out on his own ledge when the scream of a dragoness in heat echoed through the Weyrbowl. The pale blue dragon hummed happily, eyes whirling faster. Well, wasn't this perfect timing?
Hirion, meanwhile, was looking over hides in the library, and gave a wry sigh as she realized what was happening. Of course it couldn't have waited until she had finished what she was working on...Who is it, Ferrth?
He leaped into the air, and it didn't take long to find the green leaping into the air. Beautiful Avirith! he crowed. I never realized before just how lovely you were! I will take your challenge; let me show how skilled I am.
Hirion shook her head ruefully, down on the ground. Really, Ferrth? Going after the Weyrlingmaster? That might be a bit awkward...

It was time. Avirith was rising. A lovely green she was... Sweet and determined. He liked her. He was going to chase her. On the ground, J'mol groaned. By Faranth. He would not allow a repeat of what happened during Kayath's flight. No. He had to find himself a substitute now. Before he got caught up in the flight and... what if Vaarinth won. He couldn't end up with Ara again... Not after last time. It was wrong. Vaarinth couldn't be bothered.
Avirith! Darling green! I shall dare to chase you! You are a princess and dancer like no other and I would be honored for even the chance to dance with you! He crooned as he took off after her, his wings stretching.
Faranth! She was beautiful and wonderful! He started to sing then, sing for her, to give her what he could - music... as well as skill.
This was going to be a hard flight. A definitely hard flight... She was going ot make it a hard flight. She was a wonderful and great green dragoness... and she had done much for him already.

So, three blues and a brown. Not a bad turnout so far. The Green dragoness looked over her shoulder, arching her neck to show off her lithe body as she spiraled away from her chasers. They would have to work hard and fast to impress her, she wasn't going to just dance with anyone. Winging back, tucking in her appendages to let her fall to one of them, she crooned sweetly in his mind.
You pay such sweet compliments Eldomoth, but tell me, do you really have what it takes? She swung around him, spiralling out of his reach playfully and spread her wings before she got too close to the brown. How nice to see you Prince. Do not worry, a slow dance can be just as thrilling as a fast one. Keep up as you can. She let an affectionate caress of her tail slide across his back before rising into the sky once more.
Oh I remember you little one. Show me what you got Ferrth, I'll be pleased to see if Mine's teaching has payed off. She crooned, pride swelling within her to see the young Blue chase her. Unlike his rider she had no such qualms about the act. At the sound of Vaarinth's voice she squealed with joy, her latest "crush" ariving on seen. His words angered her though and she trumpeted a displeased growl.
Queen, Vaarinth, not Princess. Do not mistake me with Your's Hatchling's lifemate. I am better than she is! Work hard for me sweet Blue and we will see what happens. Swirling up and over to the treetops she curled in little loops, enjoying the feeling of flight. It was a game, a dance, a hunt, and her as the prey. Oh yes, she enjoyed their music, their words, but she was thrilled to be chased.
Catch me if you can boys! You may not be alone even, others could still show up! She teased them, flitting in and out of their wakes, calling praises to them. Her pale body was a shadow among theirs, weaving in and out of their reach, wanting them to try for her, reach out to her. Impress me! The cry was a song in of itself, her wings tucking in as she dove through them again.
Back on the ground Ara was starting to tense, upset that her chasers had not yet arrived, and yet happy they were not yet here. The draconic part of her mind wanted to hiss and wrap herself around the nearest person, taking them down with her. The more human part of her just wanted to get back to her weyr, somewhere safe and familiar. She saw the blue and brown hides, she saw the trees Avirith flew over, she hardly saw her own view in front of her.
At a familiar voice though she broke out of the trance for a moment, her body stumbling as she curled around the Topazrider. There were others here too though, and she fought within herself to decide between them and J'dol. Her fingers tightened around his, her body shaking. "Don't let me go...please don't let me go." That was the last thing she could say, she wasn't just Ara anymore. She was Avirith-Ara now, entirely her dragon as her dragon was entirely her.
She hissed at the chasers, hissed at the rider she had curled herself around. For now he was her plaything, until she grew bored. If he tried to move her she would fight back, she wasn't ready to leave yet, and the looks she threw to her chasers told them as much. Her lips curved up into a devious little grin as she started to move away from J'dol again, though something kept her there, some little bit of her that wanted to stay where she was. It was...safe, yes that was the word.
He was safe.
This is it nothing to hide One more kiss never say goodbye This is it babe you're all mine Looking at all or nothing Babe it’s you and I

How could anyone not work hard for you Queen of the skies!? You are wondrous. I promise you that I shan't stop until the flight is decided or until my wings fall from my sides. I wish to play for you and dance with you I pray you let me fly with you, but we will see won't we. What can I do to Impress one so wondrous as you.... he crooned and began to sing again, spiraling and following her as best he could to show her his skill and prowess. He was an older blue, but a strong one.
He didn't bother looking at the other chasers. What was the point in that? This wasn't about them. It was about the lovely dragon ahead of them. It was about Avirith.
On the ground... J'mol was having a hard time keeping himself together.... he had to remember his stand in was here with him... He had to remain with him... as hard as it was to keep himself from going out to find the lovely rider of the lovely green dragon....
Assaila didn't take long to look for Gar once the flight started... but the last place she expected to see him was in the 'bowl. Faranth! Oh Gar... he had probably tried to wait... bu the flight lust... Gar... oh.... She had to get to him now... She didn't care about the others as she pushed her way past men and woman straight to her Gar, feeling if someoen would touch her or try to grab her and surpressing irritable shrieks of annoyance... "Gar... Gar... It's Assaila... I'm right here... Gar... Please..." She begged him quietly, taking hold of him gently and looking at him plaintively, her blue eyes wide. Oh... Faranth. She should have stayed in the weyr longer today....

She was beautiful! How had he survived so long without a dragoness like her in his life? He followed her as best he could, his strong wings giving him the speed he needed to follow her. He watched as she tucked her wings, falling towards another male, and for a brief moment he thought he had already lost. Oh! But she was so sleek and swift! Before the worry could fully set in she had twisted far out of the other male's reach.
Syphraelth's eyes whirled with the purples of lust as well as the greens of contentment as she drew nearer to him. As her voice reached his mind he crooned affectionately. Oh sweet Avirith! I am no prince, merely a humble brown dear beauty. He crooned, shivering at the touch of her tail. I will do my best for you sweet Avirith! She was off again though, no doubt to tease another male with her words. He rose after her, pushing his wings to carry him far and fast and always, always, staying below her. He twisted as fast as he could when she dove again, grunting at the pain, but he was soon following her dive. He was close to her, but made no attempt to catch her. She would choose her suitor, he could not force her to dance with him. But he could ask.
Beautiful Avirith, might I have this dance?
J'degar's eyes narrowed as someone grabbed his arm and he turned a dark look on the intruder. He was busy chasing the beautiful green! Who dare interrupt him! He hissed, intending to push the woman, Assaila, away, yet his body, for just a moment, fought against his dragon's instincts as he recognised her, but mid-flight he couldn't break away from Syphraelth. With another hiss, he tried to tug his arm away, his attention back on Ara. Though his his turned into a growl as the woman curled around another man. Assaila would need to try hard to drag him away before the flight ended; he was Syphraelth-J'degar, driven by instinct alone.
J'dol grinned as Ara stumbled into him, wrapping arms around her without a moment's thoughts. Should he drag her away from here, or should he remain... He knew Avirith would be back in control within moments... it was hard to fight those intincts, and he doubted Avirith-Ara would let him drag her off. So he stood, arms wrapped around her as she hissed back at the chasers, and at him.
He kept his grip on her strong, not so strong that she couldn't break away if she absolutely tried, but she had begged him to keep her there, and he wouldn't let go unless he absolutely had to. He was glad greenflights were not as strong as the queen's were... he was able to keep his wits about him for the time being. He rocked back and forth slightly and if one listened closely, they might notice he was humming to his lady.

Eldomoth stretched his neck to caress Avirith's wing, but she wheeled out of his reach. Her words made his heart sink but he refused to give up hope. He would not give in until it was over.
I would fly to the Red star and brave thread to prove to you my worth, Avirith. You are deserving of glory and praise. I've never seen a dragon so dainty so lovely as you! Let me show you I'm well worth your time!
Then the blue beat his wings and charged after Avirith. He flew above her and could have dropped upon her if he so chose, which he did not of course. Instead he purred and crooned sweet things to her and was careful to display how strong his wings and body was. He flexed his wings and tensed his theighs. He had to prove his value! He was strong! Avirith must see that!
Eldomoth growled at the other suitors. He bated how they too sought his green princess's affection. They also cooed and sweet talked her. It made rage boil in him! How dare they! How he'd like to score them...
Eldomoth trumpeted and roared with his deep brass voice and performed complicated loops and dives hoping to please Avirith. He twisted and turned and wheeled and spun. He made a display of his speed and lithe moves. Let the green see how well they'd dance. How smoothly their bodies would weave in and out. How well their talent would be matched...
I will never cease to please you! Tell me what I need to do to show you I am serious. Please, princess. Let me be your prince!
Eldomoth knew he had but one chance here. His chances were slim if at all... but he could try. And he wouldn't give up! Not until his princess decided.
--
V'rid stumbled as he came into the weyrbowl. He shaded his eyes to look for his dragon's blue hide in the fast coming dusk. He mind was fuzzy. Cloudy. He knew that the lust would only grow. Ah. Flashes of sky, and of the pretty green's hide. Fly faster. Go longer. Must. Be. Best. V'rid felt himself snarl, and glare at the other riders. They were his competition! They wanted to steal his spotlight! No. Keep control. Don't become crazed by these feelings.
With a groan and sigh V'rid shook his head, battling the intense and beastly emotions that threatened to consume him. This was Eldomoth's first real chase. And it was an exciting one. "Eldomoth. Try your best! I know you are strong! Good luck to you."
And with that V'rid strode forward to the other riders. Maybe he could still find a lady to ease his stress. If not company for the night...

Ferrth crowed joyfully at Avirith's words. She didn't reject him, despite his young age. He pumped his wings and flew even harder, throwing in a few flips and dives to impress her, though he was not as fancy as he usually was, or even as showy as some of the other chasers. He preferred to conserve his strength; he didn't want to fall too far behind his competition. He was as worthy as any of the other males, and he was determined to prove it.
Though it took awhile, Hirion did find the green's rider, already surrounded by the males' riders. It was unfortunate that she had been late; now it seemed like Ara had already chosen somebody...possibly. The flight wasn't over yet, though, and Hirion retained just enough self awareness to position herself nearby in case the greenrider changed her mind. This brought her to a place beside V'rid; the part of her that was linked with Ferrth wanted to snarl at him as a rival, but she held herself still.

Oh, so you all want to impress me? Is that it my dears? She darted around another suitor as she looked around her. They were over the ocean by now, flying back around toward the Weyr. It wouldn't be too much longer, but just a bit before she chose. Let's see who can catch me then. Stopping her acrobatic tricks, Avirith sped along, sprinting across the ocean thermals toward home. Oh yes, she wanted them to chase her, to hunt her, to catch her and then and only then would she dance with them truly.
On the ground Ara nuzzled against J'dol's shoulder, crooning as he held onto her tighter. Yes, of course she deserved all the attention, except that was not what she was getting. The other chasers were distracted, either by each other or others coming across, and she hissed at them. Her body took a step forward, her nails clawing at J'dol's arms where they wrapped around her middle. They would pay, they would pay for not paying attention to her like her dragon.
A sound somewhere between a shout and a growl escaped her as she glared at Assaila, taking another step toward the girl. Again something kept her where she was however, a part of her mind that still grasped onto that human aspect of her personality. I can't hurt her, you don't want him. You want the one behind you...there's no need to hurt her. She hissed again, turning swiftly and curling around the Topazrider again, angered and confused. The last thing her dragon bonded mind wanted was to see one of her chasers leave her.

Assaila grabbed a tighter hold of Gar as he tried to shake her off... but a moment later she came around to face him and wrapped her arms around his neck and shoulders, trying to pull him toward her for a kiss. "Gar... you're my Gar... don't you remember...?" she said to him. "It's Assaila... your.. your weyrmate... Gar..." She clung to him as if for dear life. She was scared... but she wasn't leaving J'degar here... Her wonderful brownrider who was under the effects of flightlust...
Vaarinth didn't bother hissing at the new comers, but instead he crooned and sang for her, dancing through the skies... He wanted to dance for her. My darling queen.... I beg of you.. Allow me the chance to fly with you to compete for you. Allow me to look upon your glory and I shall follow you to the edges of Pern and back again, through the boundless skies forever. For as long as I draw breath and my wings should beat.

Eldomoth beat his wing with renewed strength.
I will never tire for you Avirith! I'll chase you forevermore!
He bugled and cried with triumph and possession. He had to fight until the end! His wings fought to rise higher and dive with Avirith. His body was growing tired now. But the end was near. He could not spare a moment to rest. No! Then he would fail the test! He growled again at the other chasers and let himself glide nearer and nearer to the beautiful green. He was more than happy to have to catch her again. But home grew closer, nearer every wingbeat. His time to win was slipping.
Glorious Avirith! Your dance is most graceful! I long to follow suit and be a part of your masterpiece. I will not rush you Princess. But I hope you choose well.
Eldomoth looped backwards then wheeled sideways to appear at Avirith's side. Had he pleased her? He hoped but could not tell. He was tempted to stroke her or nuzzle her wing but he feared it would drive her off... Oh how he hoped she'd choose him!
--
V'rid glanced at Hirion as she stood beside him. It unnerved and angered him that Ara was seemingly claimed. How could that be? Was it fair? With a hiss at the greenrider for being held (as if it were her fault) V'rid tried to regain or reclaim his mind. Ocean underneath him. Green within his grasp! V'rid focused his vision taking a sharp breath. Whether or not Eldomoth won he hoped he would not be alone. To be disappointed from a flight was not easy to deal with. And V'rid found himself studying Hirion with interest although he was conflicted by Eldomoth's eagerness and rage... now what?

They were well over the ocean now; it was fortunate Ferrth had never been scared of water. He dived down towards the waves, more just because he could, than to impress Avirith. He enjoyed feeling the ocean spray on his wings and talons, though he kept close enough to the other chasers to make it clear he wasn't dropping out of the flight quite yet.
He was getting tired, though, and he sensed that the flight would be coming to an end soon. The pale blue sped up again, straining his wings in an attempt to get closer to the green beauty.
Most of Hirion was caught up with Ferrth over the waves, but the small part of her that was still separate registered what was going on in the rider's weyr. She glared enviously at J'dol, regardless of the fact that under normal circumstances, she would have been more jealous of Ara than the man. She hoped Ferrth might still win, but even if he lost, she might still get something out of it. She noticed V'rid looking at her again, and the smile she shot him was all Hirion. After that, she was swept up in Ferrth's emotions again as he inched closer and closer to Avirith...

Syphraelth followed on her trip to the ocean, getting as low to the water as he dared, but he knew his still sore wings would never save him if he got too low, so there was a maneuvre the smaller colours had him beat with. He wasn't worried though, he was strong despite his lack of maneuverability, surely the beautiful green could see that, right?
Oh Avirith, how bright you shine! How graceful you are! You're very existance boisters my soul and brings flight to my wings! He wanted her to know how precious he thought she was, how beautiful and wonderful and amazing she was. Perhaps it was because he had been grounded so long, or perhaps he truly wanted Avirith, but he was giving his all. His wings were throbbing in pain with each stroke, but he would keep fighting.
J'degar growled again as Assaila grabbed hold of him and this time he forcibly pushed her away, growling. How DARE she interfere! He would win Avirith and nothing would stop him. Syphraelth-J'degar stepped away, not yet aware of who Assaila was, or why she was trying to distract him. He hissed next at J'dol, not pleased that Avirith's was still twined with him. She would be his prize!
J'dol winced as nails dug into his arms, but his grip never once loosened, despite the pain. He had no doubt he'd have to find bandages later, a quick glance proved him right; how had human nails shredded his arms so much. Even still, with brows furrowed in concentration he retained his hold, especially since some random woman was getting herself into trouble.
"Shardit all woman! Get away from them. Wait for the flight to end if you don't want to get hurt!" Of course, he himself was ignoring that rule but... it was under Ara's request; she had begged him!
"Ara stay with me," He mumbled to her, trying to draw her attention from the intruder, "I am yours remember, all yours."
