Location:
[Minor Hold - To Be Searched to Trelis Weyr]
Rank:
Candidate. Junzun of Ortiega (Explanation in bio).
Personality:
A mind of ice and a heart of fire.
To examine Nai’s personality you must look at both her exterior persona and her real personality underneath it. On the outside, she appears as an ice queen. She can be cool, aloof, and temperamental. This can lead others far from her, as they feel she is perhaps mad or annoyed at them. Included with this mind of ice is a temper of quite the opposite. When she is annoyed or angered she is not afraid to vocalize or display it. Her reactions are sometimes conflicting. Her earlier part of her life taught her the ‘importance’ of violence, but how to restrain it. The later part enforced violence only for someone else’s protection, but was not as reserved at showing it. Sometimes this dichotomy results in her having physical outburst, at other times just a stinging tongue. She is at best unpredictable.
To really know her though, you have to warm the ice and see the heart of fire that lies underneath. Nai is extremely caring of others and is always willing to fight for someone else. She is constantly and consistently determined to enforce equality and fairness amongst others, and ensure continued peace in a group. She is deeply compassionate and empathetic, though she obviously struggles at displaying these feelings, especially in groups. She’s naturally charismatic and has made a good leader in the group situations she’s been involved in throughout her life. She makes a point to remember everyone’s name, and at least one or two details about their life. She wants to make sure everyone feels important, because they are too her. She forms deep bonds with those she lives with, but she’d never be able to admit it or know how put words to those feelings. Somehow though she does her best to get this feeling across, and most people understand that she’s a wise decision to follow, even if she can come off as cold or harsh. When she’s been in a few leadership positions, she’s never been arrogant or felt the need to distance herself from those who follow with her. These personality traits makes her all the more connectible to the oft rough and tumble groups she’s lived with.
Nai is unlucky in the romantic aspect of life. She’s never been in a relationship before. She knows about it and how to go about it, certainly. She’s just never found someone who could melt that ice exterior and care about her for more than her body. She knows someone is out there who might be able to do so; she just hasn't met them yet.
She’s very dedicated to whatever task she is set to do, to the point of being a bit single-minded at times. It’s this focused mentality that helps her stay alive, as well as practice fighting and martial arts with a great deal adherence. She practices every day, as many hours as she possibly can. She enjoys the physical work out and finds it makes her happy. It is ‘soul nourishing’.
Nai is quite intelligent, but has never had much of a proper schooling. She’s quick to catch on and learn, and is very ‘street smart’ but has not much opened books. She can barely read anymore, let alone write. She hopes someday to refine these skills again.
Appearance:
See above. Nai is on the tall side for females, standing at 5’ 7”. As with most women who are on the tall side, she is built thinly. Her shoulder width is not large, and the rest of her body is on the thin side. Most people describe it as the stereotypical “stick” body type. Her bust is on the small side, due to lack of consistent nourishment and extensive and continuous physical exercise. Her stomach and the rest of her curves are equally small, due to the same factors. Her skin is tan from exposure to sunlight, but is naturally pale. Therefore it never gets deeply tanned. Her nails are dirty, and badly taken care of. It’s not unusual for her to have a light coating of dirt on her.
Her face is generally considered quite attractive. Her nose is small and pert. However, it is slightly crooked on the bridge due to having been broken and reset a few times. She’s a bit gaunt both by bone structure and lack of nourishment. Her eyes are large and a stunning light blue like ice, which is what normally draws peoples attention. She wears her hair quite short, and will put it up in a ponytail when possible.
On her hands, wrists, and forearms are a variety of small scars, mostly from bleeding knuckles or failed knife defenses. None of them are particularly knotted or severe, but they are there. Nai doesn't really care about them.
Nai holds herself high when walking, shoulders slightly back and eyes always raised to her destination or the object of her attention. Her arms and hands are loosely always by her side, the best position to react to something. She has a light spring in her step, from many years of learning to bounce or walk on the balls of her feet. When she stands she usually faces direct to the object, feet about a foot apart, arms slightly curved with her hands in fists down near the front of her thighs. If she feels frustrated, she'll often her head even a little higher, as if looking down her nose at the thing thats frustrating her. Her nostrils tend to flare accordingly with her level of frustration.
She dresses as she can afford. General cheap clothe and a piece or two of leather. She’s not afraid to wear just one earring if she can’t find, scrounge up, or otherwise afford a second.

History:
Nai was the first daughter and middle child to be born to Kiln Ortiega, born at Nerat Hold. Her mother Misha was a fling and hasn’t had much contact with her daughter since birth.
The Ortiega’s are a peculiar family, as indicated by the simple fact of having a surname. It all started with Nai’s Great-Grandfather, who was simply Ortiega. Her Great-Grandfather was a bit of a schemer, merchant, and drunkard. He was excellent in a bar fight, and after a particularly nasty bout, was struck by a ‘brilliant’ business idea. He sobered himself up (mostly) and, instead of selling trinkets or craft goods as a typical merchant, he was going to start selling skills. Skills he believed only he possessed. When he traveled from Hold to Hold, he sold his skill to fight. He taught men and boys basic brawling techniques, but it was nothing unusual. He said it was so they could fight better when they’d had a bit too much ale, or when their neighbor annoyed them. It was cheap, unusual, a bit shady, and definitely underhanded. Nothing true, but it looked real, and that was what mattered to the businessman and his clients. Ruffians sought it out. His first name eventually became the name of the particular fighting style he had created. Ortiega, the martial art, was born. As Ortiega aged, he refined the martial art and eventually had a son. When he did, he took the name of the martial art, and his name, and made it his son’s surname. This was both as shrewd business move and a bit of vanity. It made the martial art and his blood seem far more important, so shady people began to flock. His son inherited his father’s business. He was equally shrewd and kept it going, while also make great bounds for the actual quality of the fighting techniques being taught. Thus, the continuation of the Ortiega line was born.
This was the life Nai was born in to. Business shrewd, violent, male dominant, but also with a slightly skewed sense of honor. Her father had made the first permanent so called ‘Hall’ of the Ortiega martial art. A scrungy, dark little hole. Therefore, she grew up in ‘Ortiega Hall’. The business suffered its ups and downs, and people traveled to learn how to defend themselves or exact vengeance. It still isn't famous by any means, knowledge of its existence only extending to a few holds, but only amongst the lower classes who are nervous to approach Wher-handlers or anyone particularly official.
The structure was strict and people progressed through different ranks. Immediately Nai was introduced to this system. Most people disdained having a girl around, but Kiln kept her, though even he wasn't sure why. She progressed quickly in her ability to fight, and that was the focus of much of her child-hood. She learned basic education, but her life centered on “how to throw a proper right hook in scissor swipe to grapple the opponent to the ground” than “See dragon. See dragon fly. See dragon fly and fight Thread.” Some called her a prodigy; some said it was luck because they didn't want to hit a girl. It was somewhere probably in between the two. The hours she spent practicing were long and hard, and her social skills were stunted by this fact.
In addition she suffered various abuses. Her father was harsh, physically punishing, and had a penchant for ale. Because of the shady nature of the whole place, as well as the martial art, it was used as a tool of aggression and violence. Whenever she misbehaved, even when she was young, a physical beating was not out of the question. Sometimes it was just forcing her to have a 'match' with someone better than her. Sometimes it was just a plain beating, unadulterated and vile. As she slowly began to age, the more perverse people visiting the ‘Hall’ began to pay her undue attention and often pursued her, though she had only yet hit 13 Turns. After a continued pursuit by particularly cruel man, he attempted to force himself on her. It was a traumatic event for her, and still haunts her. She was eventually able to bruise him enough that he was forced to let her go. He attempted to hurt her at that point, but she was smaller and quicker, and managed to get away. She went to her father, whom she believed with childish innocence would stand up for her. He was drunk though, and he said the assault was her fault and slapped her. She went to her room, silent and hurt. This led to one of the most important moments of her life. She ran away. If you asked her how, she can’t quite remember. She snuck out, snuck into a feed-cart, and left. Left the Hold they'd settled in, left the 'Hall', left her family.
The journey was uneventful, and she was naturally discovered as a stow-away. The man was kind though and let her tag along, saying he would help her find something to do at the Hold they were journeying too.
She ended up at Sollace Hold to get away from her family. It wasn't long before she was taken in as a drudge. It hasn't been a pleasant life, but its been safe and sheltered enough. Whoever she's been serving has been generally pleasant to her and she works as hard as she can. To detail out this part of her life would be an exercise in repetition. Everyday is filled with the same menial, physically oriented labor tasks. Nothing particularly happens, for good or bad. It drives her a bit crazy, but knowing the alternatives of the world, she's content enough. Eventually do to hardship and idea of opportunity, the family whom she was particularly employed with moved to a minor Hold near Trelis, where she now resides.
Further Details:
Her martial art closest resembles the earth-based martial art Hapkido. Earth-Based Example Ortiega seeks to be a fully comprehensive fighting style and as such tries to avoid narrow specialization in any particular type of technique or range of fighting. It maintains a wide range of tactics for striking, standing joint locks, throwing techniques (both pure and joint manipulating throws) and pinning techniques. Some styles also incorporate tactics for ground fighting although these tactics generally tend to be focused upon escaping and regaining footing or controlling, striking, and finishing a downed opponent, rather than lengthy wrestling or submission grappling engagements.
Proper Ortiega tactics include using footwork and a series of kicks and hand strikes to bridge the distance with an opponent. Then to immediately control the balance of the opponent (typically by manipulating the head and neck), for a take down or to isolate a wrist or arm and apply a joint twisting throw, depending upon the situation; Ortiega is a comprehensive system and once the opponent's balance has been taken, there are a myriad of techniques to disable and subdue the opponent.
Ortiega makes use of pressure points. These pressure points are either struck to produce unconsciousness or manipulated to create pain allowing one to more easily upset the balance of one's opponent prior to a throw or joint manipulation. It does take quite a bit of training to be truly good, but that's why there is the 'school'.
Rising Star Brown Mesrath
Info
Impressed To: Nai
Pronunciation: Mezz-wrath
Rank: Brown
Size: 36.5 Feet (7.3 Feet at Hatching)
Color Codes:
603913

b77232
Appearance:
Mesrath is a large brown, in more ways than one. At almost thirty-seven feet, Mesrath sits on the large end of the brown scale and that alone can cut quite the intimidating image. However, he’s also a very wide dragon, making him seem even more imposing. Thicker than he is long, at least if you ignore his average sized neck and tail, Mesrath has a rather awkward shape about him. His legs themselves are on the thinner end and it’s a wonder how they support him sometimes, and they end in large, flat feet. His short, round wings are positioned a tad farther down on his back than normal, but it doesn’t seem to impede him in any way.
This dragon’s hide is primarily a rich, mocha brown colour and is, overall, rather uniform across his hide. A dark, chocolate brown coats his neck. His head, a stripe down either side of his neck and most of his back changes into a soft, orange-tinged, brown that reaches roughly halfway down his tail. His front feet up to his ankles share the same colour. On Mesrath’s legs are two interlocking stripes of a light peach colour that are lined with chocolate brown. He has a tearstain under each peach-rimmed eye in chocolate brown as well with large chunks of mocha brown to either side.
To make his overall appearance seem even more awkward, Mesrath has a strange way of walking. Like a ship in the water, this brown seems to rock and bounce with each step. His head and tail are always held high in pride, though the angle at which he carries his neck and tail, curved towards his back, seems simply strange to onlookers. At night, Mesrath falls into a sleep as heavy as death and cannot be roused until the sun rises.
Personality:
Forever the rising star, Mesrath knows he is good, very good at what he does. His ego is great, but easily bruised. But he is lazy in most attempts at friendship or kindness, only really looking out after his and rarely caring about anyone that she cares about even.
He will observe everything and work hard to improve himself. He, himself and His, he will push him and His very hard to be the very best. He sees himself as more than a sub-king, though he is brown. He is not good at being second best or second in line.
He feels a great sense of duty, and duty is the only thing that will drive him to look after anyone. He dislikes most who think themselves better than him, but loves the more subservient natures of others. He is, however, going to risk himself in order to protect those he is responsible for.
He lacks the violent tendencies of some of his siblings, but is still a forceful and daring dragon who must be the best. While generally kind, he has a hard time making friends as he is, quite frankly, too lazy to actually put in any effort or try to gain them at all. Or even to show real kindness to others. He can be callous and harsh.
When it comes to his eating habits, Mesrath is rather... odd. He hates red meat if its uncooked and will only eat fish or cooked meat. He dislikes getting his claws bloody or marring his perfect brown hide with the blood of those lesser creatures unless absolutely necessary.
He finds the wild felines fascinating and longs to hone his claws in beating them, despite his general dislike of getting said claws bloody.
Mind-Voice:
I'd help, really, but I'm just too comfy.
Despite his intimidating appearance, Mesrath has a surprisingly calm voice. A medium tone for a male, his voice almost seems to trickle gently into the minds of his listeners. There is a subtle power to his voice, but at the same time it never seems to be overwhelming.
Inspiration:
Sun-god of Heliopolis (known to the Egyptians as Annu), head of the Heliopolitan ennead. He was considered self created and the creator of all. He is the father of Tefnut and Shu. Ra has been known by many names and takes many different forms. This makes him one of the most confusing gods to understand. -- Info
