J'degar's reaction was expected, but Ka'mond was thinking he'd prefer a slap or a beating to such as the man gave. His jaw tightened at the comments and Abyrath growled low, eyes tinged red. How dare he!! What gave this man such power?! Auuuuugh!!
But... but now Ka'mond dropped to the ground, every fiber in his body quivering with rage. He felt like he was burning and freezing from hate.. He inhaled, beginning the first of his punishment. Mine... We are going to win. We'll show him.. We are best. Get up. Get up and he'll be sorry!! ? There! That was his Abyrath! That was how she thought!
A grim seriousness took over his features, almost haughty in a way. They were mutants, misfits... but... That wouldn't stop them.
Ka'mond rose, dusting himself off. Behind his mask was a torrent of fire, but it would not effect him. Not now. He could channel it for positive.
"As you wish, Master J'degar." It was hard not to spit at the teacher's face. But.. he managed. Ka'mond strode to his purple dragoness and settled into place, tightening his straps as much as he could. His chest rose and fell rapidly, his heart thundered. But it was all right. Because they would win.

For all that J'degar wasn't the friendliest creature on Pern, he wasn't the type to stoop to beating his underlings. He spoke from experience and he taught the weyrlings what he expected in his own wingmates. Above and beyond that, he never demanded they do anything he himself could not do. That said, he expected his orders to be followed without question. Keeping a clear, controlled mind... well he spoke from experience there for sure; the scars along his back and arm, and along Syphraelth's leg, were proof that he learned that lesson the hard way. For a brief moment, as Ka'mond and Abyrath both seemed to glare at him, J'degar thought they might try to put up a fight. Soon enough though, the boy threw in the towel and dropped to the ground to do the pushups. That was good then, the boy had common sense. Perhaps he was not a lost cause after all. Little one, you and Yours must take your time and remain calm. J'degar may be rough, but he is patient. He would rather spend all afternoon prepping for the jump than losing you between. J'degar mounted the brown, buckling himself in and gave the signal to launch, once again taking a lazy glide as he waited. When you think you are ready, send the image for approval. Remember, calm and collected. While the brown was confident the young pair would get it this time, J'degar eyed them skeptically.

Abyrath took her teacher's signal and sprang into the air, beating her wings hastily. Her tail lashed, touching Ka'mond's leg to get him to meet her own eye. Listen to me Mine, and listen well. You cannot do anything to make me hate or be disgusted by you. You should care less how someone else thinks of us. We have each other, what do we need their opinions for? Promise me- Don't look away! Promise me you will do everything in your power, as I will, to prove your worth. We... we are one. A perfect pair. No one can break us.
Ka'mond's scowl broke, and... he smiled. His hand touched Abyrath's neck. Abyrath, I will do everything I can. I'll die for you. IdiotMine! If you die, I die! Do not say that! We accomplish nothing that way! Now, we must show J'degar how wrong and silly he is. Abyrath swatted Hers with her tail. Ka'mond fliched and fixed his gaze on the Star Stones, exhaling and sending the image to Abyrath. And from there the purple dragoness gave it to the brown. J'degar watched. He watched closer than Ka'mond might have realized, though it wasn't like the amethystrider was looking his way. If all went well, the brat would break out of his whinefest and get down to business. As Syphraelth had said, J'degar was patient, while he would gripe and groan about his time being wasted, he truly would wait until the pair was ready. She has sent it. Syphraelth said as he passed the image along. J'degar nodded, and Syphraelth did the rest. Focus on the image, do not change it, and when you are ready jump between. Remember to jump to above the stones, too close to the ground is dangerous. Mine and I will meet you on the ground after the jump. Well, they hoped anyways. Syphraelth banked, turning to dive down to the star stones, where he landed and wait. J'degar dismounted, arms crossed as he waited for the pair to show him they could do it.

Abyrath caught the signal, man and beast tensed. It was black. Black and it terrified Ka'mond still. The boy clung to Abyrath, finding himself struggling to draw a breath into his burning lungs. What was taking so long? Why weren't they popping out?
Ka'mond stopped, and he remained still. If Abyrath was confused he should not distract her...
The time was distorted, and right when Ka'mond swore he was dead, sunlight blinded him and warmed him! His cheeks were reddish despite the cold and fear. Whether from anger or embaressment...
Abyrath banked sharply, swerving to meet the brown. We made it Mine. Loosen your grip please....
To Ka'mond's horror he still held his dragoness, not that J'degar would likely tell... I... I forgot.. Both now rose to meet their teacher. This was always the worst part, waiting to see if your student's training would cease here or not. Waiting, watching, J'degar saw Abyrath disappear, and in his mind began counting. Syphraelth too was quiet as he watched the skies, waiting for a sign of the pair's return. There were so many things that could go wrong; misjudging the time of day, picturing the location wrong, getting distracted last minute and ending up elsewhere, or worse not coming back out at all. He had seen the image they would use, and he was sure it was right, but that wouldn't remove the possibility of an error between his approval and their jump. There they are, Syphraelth trumpeted, spreading his wings in approval. J'degar signalled them down to the ground. "Not bad, kid." J'degar finally said after a moment of looking them over. He was checking for the telltale signs of stress in the dragon, but she seemed to be doing alright. Resiliant little thing, wasn't she? "We might make a rider out of you yet." It was a compliment, though by no means was it complete approval. "That's it for between today. You will practice keeping yourself calm and picturing locations after your lessons."

Abyrath stretched her neck and poked Ka'mond. He held his gaze at his teacher, not a challenging stare but not an exactly respectable one either. The boy didn't drop his eyes until an amethyst tail flicked his leg.
"Yes sir." That was all Ka'mond could manage. Abyrath was not useless. She was not slowed by him! .... Was she? The blond headed boy stole a glance at his dragoness, hand reaching to cradle her snout. That would be his worst and greatest nightmare; To think Abyrath could not be great because he stood in her way...
Mine, hush. Abyrath said no more. She was for once at a loss for words, positive or negative.
Ka'mond felt ashamed and angry and tired and cold. He hated this. Maybe he was a farmer's orphan by everything. Were the odds against him? He was as odd as his mutant dragon. They were outcasts...
His eyes flashed as he stared at the ground. One day, Abyrath would be the best, if it cost h everything. She was his perfect dragon. She deserved as much as he could give.
"Is this dismissal, Master J'degar?" Had his behavior cost them Firestone practice? He and Abyrath still remembered the sack of fiery rocks... Wasn't that what the teacher had planned?
