"It happens..." J'degar raised an eyebrow in curiosity. It almost seemed like the man wanted to be a stands impressee... he supposed he should tell Iro to grow up and move on; stands impressions were rare compared to sands impressions, and the dragons still tended towards younger men and women. At the same time, he could understand the dream of impressing; he couldn't imagine a life without Syphraelth, even if the brown annoyed him sometimes.
"To impress from the stands isn't always a good thing. Many good men have had to leave families and promising crafts behind because of a wayward dragon." Not that Iro really had either, at least not in the most proper respect. He wasn't a crafter after all. This was a side of Iro J'degar hadn't known before, and he wondered if he was hearing the man correctly. "So you dream of dragons huh?"
As he spoke he leaned his head back to rest on the ledge, his eyes closing, mouth agape in a long yawn as he relaxed further, the small amount of fellis truly kicking in.

It happened. Iromineelmris knew it happened, but J'degar had confirmed. It happened. He felt his heart lighten just a slight bit. It was possible. It was possible. There was still a chance. But... he was thirty. What dragon would want him? The dragon would have to be insane! Absolutely insane! The cook felt his dream die again. Dragons rarely chose from the stands... they chose from the sands, where they were supposed to, and tended towards the young, who were more malleable.
Iromineelmris listened to J'degar, thinking that none of that applied to him. But then he tensed as J'degar guessed his greatest dream. He averted his eyes. "Ever since I was a child..." he whispered, still unable to look his friend in the eyes. "I hated you, you know. Because you had the privelage of a dragon, a beautiful, gorgeous, perfect dragon. But then I realized I couldn't envy you that, couldn't wish to take it from you. After all, what dragon would ever want me?" His voice was bitter.
Despite his words, and the initial tensing of his muscles, he too sunk further into the water, completely and totally relaxed, though his thoughts were grim. What dragon would ever want him?

"You make it sound like dragonriding is nothing but fun and glory." He had been the same, once upon a time. But impressing a dragon and becoming a part of their world - a world so different from what he was used to - had been a bit of a a culture shock despite how prepared he had thought he was. "It takes hard work and dedication. There's little time for goofing off and partaking in large amounts of fellis." Even as he spoke he reached for his mug, taking a small sip before putting it back, still grimacing from the taste. But shard it all, he was thirsty!
"You wouldn't be the first to hate me anyways." He shrugged, not at all bothered by the prospect. He did however know that it wouldnt be right to smash the man's dream; there was always a chance to impress, low as it may be. "A dragon knows best. If there's one for you it'll find you. I've seen strange people impress." Like the blind girl from his weyrling class. A girl that should never have impressed because of her disability... and yet there she was.
"Have you ever been on a dragon?" He wasn't sure where the question had come from, but he couldn't deny he was suddenly curious.

Iro shifted. He knew dragonriding wasn't all fun and glory... he didn't really want to be a rider for the fun or glory... he wanted to be a rider because he was lonely. Having a dragon bonded to him would mean he would have someone beside him forever... for his entire life. Of course, glory was involved, with fighting thread, and he supposed J'degar was right... he'd have to cut back on fellis...
He noted that J'degar had taken a sip of the pure fellis, but said nothing. At his friend's next words, Iromineelmris smiled sadly. "You're just saying that so you don't crush my dream. It's nice of you, Gar, but I've really practically almost given up on it anyway." Yeah right. If he made it to one hundred years old he would never give up. Never ever.
At J'degar's next question, the cook looked up. "Um. No. I was born here and, well... there was never any reason... and I could never think of a good excuse... and I was too ashamed to ask... not that I had anyone to ask." Again, his voice was bitter.

"I don;t claim to know how a hatchling's mind works. It's a rare, but completely possible happenstance." He wasn't going to push it however. Iro was likely too old, but one never knew just what would happen at a hatching. Of course, J'degar was positive he would never impress, but he wouldn't say it alloud. Instead, he held out the mug of fellis. "Drink away my friend." Maybe if he got rid of the fellis, he wouldn't have to worry about drinking too much. He was already feeling more than relaxed enough.
He watched Iro, contemplating his words. "I suppose taking you up on Syphraelth would be a fair trade for the fellis." He said off handedly. He was a firm believer of trade, so he felt guilty even sipping at the fellis without giving something in return. "If you want anyways. That idiot brown wouldn't care either way."

Iromineelmris shrugged. He knew J'degar didn't think it would happen, and he was probably right. No dragon would ever Impress to him. It was just too unlikely... he was too old... too disposable. No dragon would want a lifemate like him. Gar didn't claim to know how a hatchling's mind worked, but Iro knew enough that a hatchling was smart enough to pick anyone other than him. Gar held out the mug, and Iro took a sip before passing it back.
At J'degar's next words, Iromineelmris shot straight up, his blue eyes wide in his face. He looked like a child who had just been promised a lifetime of sweets. "Really?! You'd do that?!" He couldn't believe it! He'd get to ride a dragon! "Of course I want to! When can we go? Now? No, not now, I'm way too high. Tomorrow?"

He had assumed the man might be excited about the prospect of riding a dragon; most people were their first time. However, the sheer level of excitement caused him to stare at iro with the biggest dumbfounded expression on his face.
"I don't make offers I don't follow through with." He said bluntly, still not entirely sure how to deal with this rediculously excited Iro. "I don't drink and fly Iro. You'll have to wait if you want a lift." He figured Syphraelth wouldn't mind taking someone else along on their practice sweep. "I'll need a day or two to double check the straps. I haven't used the passenger straps in a while." He ran a hand through his hair, feeling the fuzzy coolness spreading through him. He was beginning to think he could spend the rest of his life in this bath.

J'degar's response was entirely dumbfounded. He seemed completely confused. Iromineelmris, however, didn't even let the ecstatic expression fall from his face. He was going to ride a dragon! He was going to get to fly! He was finally, finally, finally, after all these years, going to be able to ride a dragon, a real dragon!
His friend still seemed unsure of how to react to his childlike excitement, which was ignored by Iromineelmris. "A day or two? Okay, that's fine! Can we go between? Can we, Gar? Please? Oh, shards, I'm gunna ride a dragon!" He was practically bursting with excitement, so he took another gulp of fellis before passing the jar back to J'degar.
Despite his excitement, he was completely and totally relaxed. The warm bath combined with the fellis was making him feel as if he was floating on air, even in his hyper-excited state. J'degar looked the same, with the fellis slowly taking over. Iromineelmris settled back and sunk into the water. "I'm going to ride a dragon!"

"Calmd down Iro... you're acting like ten Turn old." He massaged a temple with his thumb, suddenly wondering if that had been a bad idea. The man was just so excited... he had never seen an adult let loose like this before. Was it the fellis? Or was riding a dragon really that special to him. Of course, J'degar could understand it being a dream... even after all these Turns there was a strange thrill in feeling Syphraelth take off.
J'degar's eyes took on a far off look; the look all riders got when they spoke with their dragons. If it is what you wish Gar, I shall have Annaliese bring up the healer for a check up. I feel fit enough to between on our sweeps. Theyw ere both being cautious however. THough they had been cleared to begin exercising again, going between with an injury could be dangerous and set them back.
"I'll have the healer check Syphraelth tomorrow. If he's cleared we can between." HE gave the man another curious look. "I don't know why you'd want to skip between though... its cold and empty." And most candidates scared themselves silly during their first between experience. He took the jar back, taking another small sip. "It really isn't tasting any better."

Iromineelmris could tell he was scaring his friend a bit by being so excited, so he tried desperately to calm himself. He was acting like a ten turn old, and it was rather absurd. But riding a dragon... he blocked that thought from his head. He wouldn't think about it until it actually happened. He had waited thirty turns... he could wait a bit longer.
J'degar said that if Syphraelth was cleared by a healer, they could go between, but Iromineelmris clamped down on his will as to not go crazy-excited again. If he let loose again, Gar might change his mind, and he couldn't let that happen. "I want to go between because it's part of what dragons do," he said, as if that explained everything... which it clearly didn't. He had heard it was terrifying, but he wouldn't be scared... he'd be with Gar, and he'd be on a dragon.
As his friend took another sip of the fellis, Iro laughed. "It will, don't worry." Gar hadn't had that much to drink yet, but as time wore on, he was sure his friend would adjust to the taste. As he watched J'degar, it occured to Iromineelmris that he might have feelings for the man that extended beyond friendship, which surprised him. He had naturally lain with both men and women, but it surprised him that he should have such feelings for J'degar. After all, his friend was with Assaila...

J'degar had to admit the man was right; almost every candidate got to experience between so why should Iro? He wasn't willing to try Syphraelth on a long jump even if he was cleared... perhaps just from their practice sweep to the Weyr; as far as he had heard from the searchriders, the candidates were always taken away by a dragon's eye view of the Weyr.
"Aye, that makes sense," He finally agreed, still relaxing with eyes closed. It sure seemed like a trip a-dragonback would be an equal trade for the fellis. J'degar liked when things worked out that easily. He grimaced down at the cup, still not entirely enjoying the flavour, though the light-headed feeling was becoming quite nice. He supposed he could just sip at it for a while. He stretched, muscles rippling with the movement. "This was a good idea... I can't remember the last time I relaxed in the baths."

He could see that J'degar was seeing his reasoning. Finally, Gar gave in, and Iromineelmris smiled. Any trip on a dragon would be well worth it, and if they got to go between, so much the better! If Gar's dragon wasn't cleared, however, Iro would not ask them to go between. He would not risk hurting either Gar or his Bonded.
It occured to him again that he might feel more for J'degar that just friendship. He felt heat rise to his face that had nothing to do with the steaming water of the baths. After all... they were alone... and naked... And J'degar was getting higher by the moment.
Iromineelmris moved closer, under the pretense of taking the fellis mug to take a sip. When he put it back, the two men were sitting next to each other. Iro watched Gar stretch and gave an appreciative sigh. His friend was well muscled, and certainly attractive. The cook let himself stretch as well, his own muscles stretching and coiling as he did. "Yeah..." He murmured. "It was a good idea..." Turning to J'degar, he smiled lightly, unsure of how to proceed.

J’degar, of course, had no inkling of the thoughts running through Iro’s mind or he may have just found himself getting far, far away. To Gar, the cook was an ally, a provider of fellis, and (when he wasn’t being annoying) a friend. They were simply two men who shared a mild addiction to a wonderful drink and a few shared interests.
He vaguely registered the sounds of Iro moving closer, and initially thought he should open his eyes and see what the man was up to, but before long Iro had taken the mug for another drink. Ah, that was why he had moved closer then, it made sense. J’degar blindly fumbled for the mug and took another few sips, not wanting to sit up and open his eyes to do it… after all he knew the fellis was getting to him. He knew if he opened his eyes the world might swim before him, and that he should really stop sipping the stuff… and yet what Iro said about the flavor was right; it didn’t taste nearly so bitter now.
“Syph says we should have hit the beach instead. Sharding beast doesn’t understand how chilly the water can get during winter.” He gave a motion with his wrist obviously meant to signal a roll of his eyes, since his head was still tossed back lazily, not to mention closed eyes made rolling them impossible.

Iromineelmris hummed appreciatively, shifting a bit to avoid being hit by J'degar's wrist motion. He nodded slowly in agreement, his own eyes closing as he lay back in the water. "Chilly indeed. I much prefer the... warmth..." He trailed off, letting his mind float along. He realized that in that moment, he was happy.
Sitting up a bit, the man took a breath, paused, and began to sing. It was surprising to find that Iromineelmris' voice was a pleasant one to listen to. His pitch and tone, though perhaps not perfect, were not incredibly far off from where they should be, and his low tenor sounded pleasant with the words he began to sing.
"Dragonman, dragonman, Between thee and thine, Share me that glimpse of love Greater than mine."
Continuing to hum, Iromineelmris leaned back again, his bright blue eyes closing once more. However, he sat up again and turned to J'degar. "You will, won't you?" He asked quietly, before he gently kissed his friend.

Was it even possible to feel this good from a drink? J'degar didn't quite know, but he had officially reached his happy place. He felt more calm and relaxed now than he had since coming to Trelis, perhaps even before then. Part of him wanted to drink more, in fact, his hand twitched towards the mug at the very thought of bringing forth more of this pleasant feeling. How he managed to blindly grab the mug and bring it to his lips without spilling it was a mystery, but he groaned happily as the warm drink made its way down his throat. He was far enough under the influence not to bother sipping either; the drink was hitting him hard.
He placed - or rather semi-dropped - the mug back on the edge and relaxed further into the water. He cocked his head to the side at the sound of singing, his eyes still closed. Not a bad sound at all... he found himself humming along quietly, his deep voice quiet next to Iro's. The words weren't really sinking in to his mind, he recognized the tune and nothing more at the moment. It was the man's spoken words that finally sunk in, and Gar's eyebrows knotted in confusion.
"Will what?" He wasn't sure if he had missed something or what, but suddenly there was the warmth of lips on his and he was pressing back against them, for a moment forgetting that it was Iro and not his weyrmate. That slip of his memory was short lived as he blinked open his eyes for the first time in what felt like forever, only to see a face that wasn't his lover's. He pushed away, the sudden movement causing the world to swim before him and against his will he found himself clinging to the nearest surface - Iro - for support.
