Naomi sobbed again, but at least she was doing it less and less with each passing minute, which meant that it was getting easier and easier for her to breathe normally. She had never expected to feel this way about anyone, especially someone like Korvin, but here she was, crying her eyes out because she loved him. She turned her head just enough so she could see Korvin as he spoke, and almost laughed at his words. If only he knew what he was saying actually meant to her. She shook her head and turned away from him again. If only you know what that meant. Her voice was harsh and scratchy as she spoke, and was a little muffled because she had buried her face into her legs again, whether or not he would understand her wasn’t exactly a top priority at the moment.
You don’t know what happened after you left. Naomi turned her head again so that she could see him, and so that he could see the pain in her face. How was she supposed to explain to him what she had felt before, and after, he had left Trelis. How was she supposed to tell him what she had had to endure after he had left her behind. He hadn’t even said goodbye, but what did that all matter now? There was no way she could change what had happened in the past, instead she had to move forward, and hope for a better tomorrow. At least, that’s what most people would tell her right? That she just had to keep hoping? Well what happens when a person runs out of hope, or when the only thing that a person really believes in abandons you for something else?

Well shard it all! He didn’t play these silly woman games! He was a simple hunter! Not a mind-reader. Rolling his eyes as she buried her head once more, he leaned back into a laying position and stretched out, trying to get comfortable. He was normally asleep by now, so he was beginning to feel the fatigue setting in, though no doubt Naomi would keep him up for another few hours.
“Well how in Pern am I s’pposed to know what happened aft’r I left? I left r’member. I ain’t no mind-reader. So come out ‘n tell me or git ov’r it.” Yes, he was harsh, but it was the only way he knew how to deal with things. Korvin was a man who lived life in the moment, thinking only of survival in the coming months. For him, things that were in the past needed to be left there… he had learned that the hard way, so the extreme emotional rollercoaster that Naomi seemed to be on was something foreign to him. So, he would simply lie down and hope for the best. Maybe she’d finally realize that he just wasn’t going to magically figure things out on his own.

You don’t know what happened before you left either then. It was obvious to Naomi now that he just wouldn’t figure it out on his own, but how could she find the right words to tell him? How can I tell a boy something that a man should know? Yes, she was being just as harsh as he was, well, sorta. She wasn’t really thinking about what she was saying, she was just saying it. Maybe that’s how she was supposed to do it. She thought about that for a moment, and wondered how that would work out in the end. Either way she didn’t think it could get much worse than it already was, could it? She shook her head and lifted her head to look at Korvin where he lay. Not only was there pain and sadness written on her face, but there was also confusion there as well.
Why did you leave me that morning? Naomi was too afraid of what he would say to look at him for long. So instead of looking at him, she looked sadly into the fire. Why did you leave without saying goodbye? Those were the two main questions that she wanted answers for, the others could wait for now. She just needed to know why he had done those two things, and the rest would surly follow suite. Maybe then things might start making sense inside of her head, maybe then she could move on with her life, and be a better handler to Nask. But until then, she was stuck not knowing, and always wondering what she had done to make things go so wrong. She was actually starting to regret ever talking to Korvin in the first place. But she wasn’t sure what she wanted now.

Korvin glowered a little as Naomi implied that he was a mere boy. As if a mere boy could survive the things he had survived! What an insult. Stupid woman! He supposed he deserved it though... she did seem to be horribly upset, so if calling him a child would make her feel better then he supposed he could live with it for now. Perhaps he would get her to go out on a hunt sometime to prove how much of a man he actually was!
He stared back at her, a bit on confusion in his own eyes mirroring her own. His eyes widened in shock and a little bit of fear as she finally asked the question he hoped would never be asked. She had seen him? She had known all along? He couldn't stop his cheeks from suddenly become red as tomatoes. His mouth hung open, as his brain simply came to a stop, completely flabberghasted as to how he should respond.
"I..." How could he answer that? Why had he run away? Of course, millions of reasons shot through his mind, but how to put them into words without making an even bigger fool of himself. Finally, he sighed, long and deep. "I... I was scared okay." He replied, looking away from her in embarassment, feeling like a child for his reasoning. Well, there was no point staying quiet now... he may as well spill it all. "I di'n't know where I was... or how I got there. I... I just knew I had done somethin' I ain't never done before." His expression had become an embarassed pout now and he couldn't bring himself to look at her.
"And I already told ye why I left the Wherhold. I had Kosk to protect y'know. She's just a li'l thing. And with 'er hide so bright we had to go when the chance came. Time wasn't really on our side. Besides..." He trailed off a bit, looking warily at Naomi, his eyes showing just how awkward he was feeling, "I di'n't think yu'd wanna see me after... after that..."

Naomi saw the shock and fear in Korvin’s eyes, and finally realized that he hadn’t even known that she knew he had been in her bed that night. But that knowledge didn’t help her feel better at all, she still didn’t understand why he had just left her. She listened quietly as he spoke, as he tried to explain himself. Do you really think I know how we got there? I had never been with anyone, and then you stole my first time and didn’t even have the courage to say anything to me after. Her voice was a whisper of pain as she spoke to him. He had not only taken her first kiss, but had taken her first time in bed with a man. Yet here he was trying to explain it away like it wasn’t anything important. That hurt her more than he could ever possibly understand; well that’s how it felt anyways.
Naomi shook her head in disbelief; she didn’t understand why he would think that about her. I am sure Kosk would have been just fine at the Wherhold, I think you left because you were afraid. She didn’t look at him, instead she just stared ahead of her at the fire as it danced in the ever growing light. She still didn’t understand why he didn’t just go and talk to her, after all how would he know what she felt, or what she would have done? She just didn’t know what to say anymore, and didn’t think it really mattered what she said. There was no changing what had happened between them, and there was no way she could get anything back that he had taken from her. Not that she actually wanted it back now, now that she was actually admitting to her feelings for Korvin.

He couldn’t meet her eyes, he couldn’t even try. She was right.. he had been less than a man, less than a child even. He hadn’t been raised to run away from anything and yet here he was, hiding in a cave in the hopes that the one girl he was beginning to trust wouldn’t find him. As she shot down his confession, his bloody heartfelt confession, he couldn’t stop himself from retorting. “Y’didn’t talk t’me either! Y’weren’t t’only one to ‘ave their first stolen.” They were both at fault for this, it wasn’t all him! Sure, he was the man and thus he should have take charge of such things, but really! She could have easily spoken to him and gotten this all dealt with a long time ago.
Her accusation that he had left the Wherhold because he was afraid stung – a lot. So maybe Kosk hadn’t been the only reason he left. Yeah, he preferred living in the wild to living in the Wherhold. Yeah, he had wanted to avoid her. But it wasn’t a lie that he didn’t want to be involved in the Weyr’s silly battle. It had nothing to do with him! He just wanted to hunt and survive and… and maybe one day settle down. But that was a long way away.
“What difference would it ‘ave made if I stayed… Not like you were goin’ outta y’ur way to talk t’me, and I didn’t wanna take part in that war…” He realized it would likely just set the girl off again but, what else was he supposed to say?!

Naomi finally turned her head to face Korvin, and glared at him as he spoke. Was he really trying to turn the blame of this onto her? Aren’t you supposed to be the big bad hunter man that is always in control?! Well where was that control when you were stealing my virginity?! She couldn’t hold back the tears that started to fall from her eyes as she spoke, or stop the sobs that started to race through her body once again. She knew she could have spoken to him, but every time she had gotten up the courage to try he had vanished, and it was as if he had been avoiding her. Like he just wanted nothing to do with her, and it felt like he regretted ever meeting her. She had to admit though, at first she regretted it too, but it didn’t take her long to realize that she actually did love the man.
Naomi didn’t know what to do anymore, and really did feel like just curling up by her wher and never getting up again. But what good would that do? She sighed and looked away from Korvin and started to stare at the fire again. It was pointless to even try anymore. He obviously didn’t care, so why should she? You obviously hadn’t been paying attention. You were too busy avoiding me and anything that had anything to do with me. She didn’t look at him, she barely even moved as she spoke. Even her words seemed void of all life. She stared at the fire, and the only thing giving her away as alive were the facts that she was blinking, tears were streaming down her face, and sobs kept shaking her as they raced through her body. Other than that, she looked pretty lifeless.

Aaaarg! Korvin wanted to rip out his bloody hair. Did NOTHING make this stupid girl happy? “Stealin’ stealin’. That’s all it was, eh? I stole it from ye? Well sorry fer bein’ a bloody thief then!” He should have known better than to try to talk to her. It was just causing more trouble. THIS was why he hadn’t want to make connections with people. All it did was bring trouble! With a groan he rolled away, making sure to avoid facing her. He just didn’t want to deal with this. Would it have been any different at the Weyr?
“Fine. Y’win. I’m nothin’ more than a big chicken, ok?” He grumbled, truly having no idea how he was supposed to make her stop hating him. “I don’ know what y’want me to do, Naomi. The past is in the past, there aint no changing that now…” He trailed off, thinking to himself for a moment. “D’you… D’you remember anythin’ o’ that night?” It was almost a whisper. To Korvin, the fact he couldn’t remember much more than sitting in the dancing tent was part of what terrified him. His memory of the night was basically none existant. He had not only list his first time, but he had also taken Naomi’s, and he couldn’t remember it at all.

Naomi sniffled, she didn’t want to win, and she didn’t want him to be a chicken. She wanted him to be the man she had originally met, but with the way things were going, it didn’t look like that Korvin would ever be coming back. She glanced at him out of the corner of her eyes, and started to wonder about what he had said. He actually cared about her opinion? That knowledge came as a shock to her. She had never pegged him as the kind of guy that would care about anyone else’s opinions, let alone that of a young woman. She had been deep in thought, and had almost missed what he had said. This time she actually did turn and looked at him. You really don’t remember anything? She wasn’t much better, so the fact that he didn’t remember made her feel a little bit better about it.
You were so sweet, and so gentle. Naomi’s voice sounded far away as she remembered what little bit she could. She even let a small, reverent smile cross her lips. She didn’t remember much about what had transpired between the two of them that night, but she did remember a little bit. But apparently he didn’t remember anything, so neither of them really knew what exactly happened. I have to admit, you were quite the gentleman. She couldn’t help but giggle a little at the faded memory of the night. She looked over at Korvin with a small smile on her face. Though, she wouldn’t ever admit to where her mind had wandered to. Either way her eyes were starting to focus on the real world again, and they seemed to have a certain spark to them that wasn’t usually there.

It was embarrassing to admit that he truly remembered nothing. “S-sweet? No way, I ain’t no gentleman. Y’must’ve had too much wine.” He retorted, his face now so read that it didn’t seem humanly possible. She HAD to be lying right? It just didn’t make sense that he would have been so nice to her… even if he didn’t really mind her all that much… when she wasn’t have the mood swings of the century.
“Only thing I remember is what I saw in the morning!” He spat out hotly, before realizing that what he remembered was, in fact, pretty embarrassing. The way he had been cuddling, with Naomi huddled right against him, nothing really separating them but skin… He ruffled his hair as he got up to throw some more wood on the fire; anything to keep him from having to think about it. He was pretty glad to see Boar had finally fallen asleep as well. “At least… that night wasn’t all bad then right?”

Naomi raised one of her eyebrows at him as he spoke. I obviously didn’t have as much wine as you did because at least I can still remember things from that night. She smirked at how red his face had gotten over the few minutes that they had been talking about that one night that they had spent together. Which made her wonder what would have happened if they hadn’t both been drunk. The way he was acting made her wonder if he wasn’t still drunk. Because he obviously wasn’t acting rationally, though she had to admit, he looked pretty cute when he was that flustered. Oh really, it mustn’t have been that bad if you still remember it. Her voice was cold as she spoke, and she even looked away from him with a small, “humph” noise, while pulling her legs even closer to her chest.
Naomi glared at the fire as Korvin threw more wood onto it, and wondered if she should just go lay down with the whers. At least they wouldn’t argue with her so much, especially when she knows what she was talking about! But his next words completely surprised her. N-No it wasn’t, at least, I didn’t think it was. At that her own cheeks started to turn red, and she had to turn away before he noticed. She couldn’t believe that she had just admitted to actually enjoying herself with him, to him! Wow, she wondered if there was going to be a full-moon or something, and if it was messing with her mind. She took a few slow, deep breaths before turning back to look at Korvin. She really didn’t know what to do anymore, her mind was a complete mess as it tried to figure out what was going on.

He grumbled and groaned to himself about what a pain in the neck she was. The ONE time he had a teensy too much to drink and she wasn’t going to let him forget it. He stopped in his tracks at her comment. “I.. uh.. th’view was nice…” He mumbled, still feeling horribly awkward about this entire ordeal, but at least Naomi wasn’t going through an emotional rollercoaster anymore… at least as far as he could tell. His head cocked to the side as she actually… did she just say something nice about that night? The expression on his face as he turned to stare at Naomi was probably priceless. He couldn’t even force a word out he was so completely shocked by her words. He felt his little wher stirring from sleep, but it dawned on him too late that his little pipsqueak of a wher would interfere.
Ok ok this enough! Kosk’s is idiot! Kosk knows Kosk’s Korvin’s secret! Kosk sick of Kosk’s acting like hatchling! She broadcasted her mind to everyone, making sure Naomi wouldn’t miss out on this. Kosk was tired after all, and her human being a confused, overwhelmed idiot was not helping her sleep at all. Kosk’s likes Nask’s. See! Not hard! Kosk smart. Kosk know.
Korvin did the only thing he could do; drop back down into a sitting position and plant his face in his hands. Stupid wher needed to mind her own damn business!

Naomi tilted her head to the side a little in confusion as Korvin spoke about, “the view” what exactly he meant by that she wasn’t sure. It was nice? She had a feeling he meant her body, which was something she hadn’t exactly paid much attention to. Without even really paying attention to what she was doing, she looked down at her body, and wondered what exactly he thought was so nice about it. She soon decided that it was only a male thing because she just couldn’t see anything about herself that was worth remembering. She shook her head a little before turning to look at Korvin just in time to see the expression that was on his face.
Naomi didn’t really have time to react before Kosk’s voice broke into her mind. She lifted her head to look at the back of the cave where the two whers were sleeping, well, where they were supposed to be sleeping. Thankfully her own wher was so tired that he didn’t even so much as twitch at everything that was going on around him. Her smoky-gray eyes widened as much as they could at the little white’s words. She would have never in a million turns have ever guessed that he had been treating her the way he had because he had liked her. She slowly turned to face him, a mischievous look on her face. She saw that his face was buried in his hands, and smirked. Is that true Korvin? Do you really like me? Her voice was soft, and was basically a giant question mark.

Of course he didn’t want her knowing about his feelings. There was no room in survival for stupid feelings! Especially not for a self-centered, know-it-all, pain-in-the-arse woman!
“N-no!” He retorted, his words muffled since he was still trying to hide himself in his own hands. “She’s.. she’s speakin’ nonsense… doesn’t know wha’ she’s talkin’ bout. Just a white, she is. Not all tha’ smart and… and…” It was likely obvious from the way he was stumbling over the words and avoiding eye contact that he was lying. He didn’t love her or anything. He didn’t even know if he really liked her. But… he didn’t dislike her either… at least when she wasn’t trying to murder him.
And… and she had missed him, right? That... that meant she cared about him right? Shards what was he supposed to do now! He couldn’t deal with this stuff! He could hunt and kill and animal without remorse, he didn’t doubt he could kill a person if he had to. But… how was he supposed to overcome this stupid, fru-fru, stomach-butterfly-inducing emotion! Kosk say, man up. Easy, yes? Korvin grimaced to himself. No, you overgrown tunnelsnake! It’s not that easy! He could feel the white huff at him as she cuddled down with Nask again.

Naomi raised both her eyebrows at Korvin’s retort, and thought he was getting a little too defensive for a man that didn’t like a woman. She shook her head at him when she finally realized that he was lying to her. But why would he need to lie to her? She just really didn’t understand why he couldn’t come out and say that he liked her. The fact that his wher had to say something about it was actually kinda cute, if not a bit silly overall. She just really didn’t understand him, not one bit. She figured that he was being so difficult and why he was lying to her, and most likely himself as well, to the fact that he was just trying to be another tough guy who was too manly to admit to his own feelings. At least, that’s all that she could come up with that would explain his behavior.
Naomi moved so that she was sitting cross-legged, and looked at him calmly. If you don’t like me then just say it. The same thing goes for if you do like me. I have never seen a man who acted so much like a child. She shook her head before turning back to face the fire again. She wasn’t sure what kind of reaction to expect out of him, but she was pretty sure he wouldn’t just sit there. She had a specific idea in her head about what he could do to prove whether he liked her or not, but there was no way on Pern that she was going to mention it out loud. Not to Nask, not to Sarabi, not to Akela, and definitely not to Korvin! No, she would just wait and see what would happen. She kept her eyes on him, well, the corner of her eyes on him anyways.
