It was early, perhaps a bit earlier than Firogel normally rose, but Father had mentioned the eggs should be hatching soon. With the hatching possibly just around the corner, the young candidate knew he wouldn't have much more time do what he wanted to do. So it was that he had managed to get up early this morning and sneak away to the store rooms to grab the materials he would need, followed by a quick trip to the kitchens for something to help him wake up.
So now he sat in a corner of the barracks common room, a cup of klah by his side and a collection of sewing supplies scattered in front of him as he looked over his candidate robes. He was rather tall for his age, but even so the robes he had been given were a tad too long for him. A boy of pride, Firo didn't want to accidentally trip over the hem on his way to the sands, so he was slowly working away on shortening the garment a couple inches. Hopefully no one would be out and about this early to bother him.

Linda was fully awake, she had been for awhile and this was just normal for her. She had kept to herself for awhile now in her barracks room as she worked on the carving she had planned. Slowly it started to take shape of the two mothers on the hatching grounds, their eggs... and She even tried to show some of them hatching after getting images from her siblings dragons on how a hatching looked. Hopefully she wouldn't jinx the hatching but she actually wanted to finish this beforehand. If she somehow impressed there wouldn't be any time for her to finish it for a long time.
Now it was time to polish it with oil, the hunk of wood was noticeably smaller then and lighter then the huge chunk when she brought it out of the forest. However she couldn't oil it in her room that she shared, the smell and fumes would be too great for them to sleep tonight and she had to let it air out well beforehand. So she went to a rather open place that she figured nobody would be there.
Linda frowned once she saw Firo there, that was the last person she wanted to see right now or deal with and frankly it was going to get worse. Oh well too late to back out now and knowing him he would call her a coward if she left once she saw him. But she could however choose a seat farthest from him she could without sitting on a riders or other persons area. Without even glancing at him she started to set up, even putting the oil on a rag to gently start to buff the nooks and crannies of the carving first.

Ugh, of all the people to come to the common room at such an hour it had to be a woman, and that annoying Linda to boot. He groaned to himself. The LAST person he wanted to deal with was her. She irked him, annoyed him, made him want to give her a good punch to the face. Father said not to hit a girl though, and though he really wanted to hit her, he planned on sticking to the no hitting rule as long as he could.
“It was so nice and quiet in here before you came stomping in.” He called over, amused that she thought sitting across the room would save her from him. “Shouldn’t a girl like you be working on getting some beauty sleep or something right now? Faranth knows you need it.” He could see she had something, but from here, with some of the furniture in the way, he couldn’t quite make out what it was.

Linda was actually enjoying herself, a little smile on her face as she concentrated on her carving. Hopefully she could really get it done today, that would be excellent because then she could find slivers of gems for the eyes... But no her good day, and good silence was broken as Firo decided to be an arse even when she didn't initiate anything. Thinking that he might just shut up if she ignored him didn't work as he just kept talking... fine two could play at that game.
"I could ask you the same thing, no guy will want a girl as ugly as you with no positive traits to speak of." One good thing came out of this tirade with him though... It was getting her better social skills via insults and learning what they meant with it all. Though she was still a ways off she was getting better at throwing insults back... Well at least she thought so.

“Oh yes, turning the same insult back on me really hurts. I’m going to start crying any moment now,” He bit back sarcastically, rolling his eyes. For how often she called him pathetic, she sure seemed to be lacking herself, at least when it came to verbal banter. He stood up then, having finished pinning where he believed the new hem would go, and slipped the robes over his head. A brief pat down to make sure it was sitting as properly as possible over his clothes and Firo began analyzing the new length. Yes, that would do! He pulled the robes back off, using the height of standing to glance over at what she was doing before settling back down to begin sewing.
“Is that the stupid chunk of wood you carried through the forest like an idiot?” He finally asked, masking the curiosity of his voice with a tone that screamed ‘not that I care’. He glanced up over at her, his sharp blue eyes showing his hidden curiosity.

Linda merely rolled her eyes and just didn't really listen to him much.. However she did glance over as he started to try on the candidate robes... Oh she wished she could tease him for putting on a dress, but the robes were mandatory and well.. She didn't want to cause disrespect and be kicked out for now just because she was trying to insult Firo. So her hands were keeping her busy as she slowly kept polishing the wood with the oil. Though he apparently didn't want to practice the same thing though as he spoke up again.
"Yes and its almost done, the mothers with their eggs in mid hatching. Hasn't happened yet but I hope it will be done by the time the hatching happens." Her tone was a bored matter of fact as she didn't even look Firo's way again. He could do silly things like fix up his robes but she would actually do something productive... But who would she give it to? Probably both the riders of the mothers and they could figure out where to put it.

Had Firo known her train of thought he would have scoffed, smirked, and made a snide comment about how great and manly he looked in the robes. Not that he actually looked good, he would just say it because he had to. He threaded his needle and set about setting a loose hem, wanting it to look natural when he moved. He glanced up as Linda actually answered his question.
“Well aren’t you being a good compliant girl today.” He teased, wondering what it would take to make her angry. Even still, he leaned over to try to get a subtle peek at the carving. He didn’t really know any carvers after all.

Linda was just trying to get this done, and hoped he would leave her alone after he sated his insatiable curiosity at the expense of her sanity. But nope he just stood there and commented on how she was being such a good girl. She merely rolled her eyes but kept most of her attention on her work. She didn't like getting so distracted that she was unable to do her best so maybe this would be a good test?
"And you are being so helpful as a distraction why thank you." Her tone was calm and monotone, only barely there really as she was half ignoring him now. She had to be careful as if she polished too much where the eyes were going they wouldn't stay when she would put them on later.

Firogel was distracted enough to prick his finger, causing him to hiss quietly before looking back down at his work. Finishing his robes was way more important than dealing with Linda anyways. He chuckled to himself at her retort, probably one of the best he had heard from her thus far.
“Oh, admit you love the attention.” He shot back lazily , pleased to see he was half done the hem. A little more and it would be perfect! Though… maybe he’d stitch his name in somewhere just for kicks. He gave a light chuckle to himself, wondering what would happen if he were to mess with the stitching on Linda’s robe.

At least the more expansive and not as detailed areas that had nooks and crannies were taken care of now on her little scultpure. Linda actually prided herself on her work, but if she was to carve a person or anything but a dragon or fire lizard... Well she just didn't really do it because she couldn't. She never had models for the types of things, unlike Jo or was it jak... Actually both of the blues loved to show off while she was carving, which helped since they each had different body types. But nope Firo started to talk again, so without looking Linda responded in an almost bored like tone.
"No, that is the love of you hearing your own voice apparently." Linda muttered in return, surely not as loudly so who knew if he actually heard it. But frankly she could care less. She was already halfway done with the polishing, but what was going to take her the most time besides the carving... Was finding and then putting on the gem shards she would need for the eyes of each dragon and dragonet in the carving.

“You have to admit my voice is just wonderful to listen to,” he shot back, the slightest hint of sarcasm in his voice. Sure, he didn’t mind his own voice, but he wouldn’t go so far as to say he loved it. What he really loved was listening to her get annoyed over a little bit of socializing. It seemed too easy after all.
“Are you ever going to show off your little wooden disaster or what?” He asked after a moment, leaning back into his work to make sure he didn’t prick his finger. He was happy to see it was almost finished, soon he could leave and return to his nice, private room.

Linda merely rolled her eyes, seriously he did love to talk... now if only she didn't have to respond to him now that would be bliss. But no of course she had to respond to him sometimes. In fact that might be part of her problem, her instincts to respond to things... be it fighting or now talking as a healer... It was working against her now, and she wasn't that smart or knowledgeable about social interactions so she didn't know how to really respond half the time... only pulling things from thin air and well they weren't as good as his... She wasn't about to mention it that he was beating her verbally though soooo badly.
"... I guess you may see it if you are interested, and I won't be showing it off in public really. Just give it to the riders of the two mothers and they can decide what they want to do with it. Its too big for me to keep." Linda's voice was pretty much nonchalant as she spoke up. She was so close to finishing it, maybe she could run with it soon as she possibly could before trying to find gem shards. That was going to be the hardest part... where was a mining hold or something nearby? "It won't be fully done till I somehow find slivers of gems for the dragon's eyes however."

At the mention that he could take a peek, Firo stretched and grabbed up his work. He shuffled over, as if he wasn’t truly interested in seeing what she had been doing. He knelt down next to Linda, leaving adequate space between them, and actually did a double take as he looked at the carving. The details, the workmanship… it was actually really good. He couldn’t help but be impressed by it, not that he’d ever actually commend her on it.
“Well what’dya know. Looks like you can do more than just wave a knife around.” There, that was a compliment right? He dropped into a sitting position where he was, not caring if she wanted him farther away or not. He couldn’t help but want to see her actually working on the carving, not to mention it would be easier to bother her if he sat closer.

Linda was trying very hard not to start laughing and tormenting Firo, which would have probably ended badly with her carving breaking. He just tried to look like he didn't care, but eventually he made his way over to look... Only to take a double take. At least he was surprised by something, good or bad she didn't care but she liked to somewhat seem unpredictable... to keep annoyances like him on his toes.
And his rather pathetic comment... well he was trying apparently not like he could really do better. "Good skill for bartering." Was all Linda spoke up as she kept working on the final touches. Seriously why did she make the carving so big, it seemed more and more nooks and crannies needed polishing.. and when she thinks she is done there is a spot she missed... Maybe he will go so she could work on her own? Yeah right, he would probably purposely make himself more work otherwise wouldn't he....

“Do you ever do anything for fun? Shards you’re boring.” Firo sighed and settled back into his sewing. He was all for working hard, but how could anyone do things for work alone. Sometimes it was nice to have a break and just have some fun. “You’d be less of a stick in the mud if you knew how to play or something.”
Do a final few stitches on his hem, he knotted the thread and cut it off, playing with the hem for a moment before standing and slipping it over his head to test the length again, mumbling quietly to himself as he went over a mental checklist. Pleased with the length of the garment now, he pulled it back over his head and settled back again, fishing through his supplies to see if there was anything else he could work on. He supposed he could go back to his room now, but he wanted to do more sewing. “It’s a shame the robes are so boring.” He spoke more to himself than to Linda as he continued looking.
Ah! There was a scrap of fabric… and he had plenty of thread colours with him. Grinning to himself, he made a number of seemingly random chalk markings on the scrap before pulling out brown thread and setting upon the scrap; now was as good a time as any to work out a good design for the dragon he would soon impress and embroider onto one of his shirts.
