Appearance:

Es’ra is five foot ten inches tall and weighs one hundred and fifty-five pounds, and most of that weight is muscle. Most of his height is due to his long, powerful legs. He has short black hair that he goes to great lengths to make sure that it won’t get long enough to get in his way. Other than that though, he doesn’t care what happens to his hair and will often forget to really clean it when he bathes. He has brown eyes that sometimes look a little greenish depending on how the light hits them. They appear to be dark pools that seem to pull people into them, and as far as he knows, his eyes have always been like this. He likes to wear darker colors, but will sometimes allow himself to wear grays but otherwise he likes to be able to blend into the shadows when needed. He doesn’t really own anything other than pants, and some t-shirts that are made out of light weight material so that he won’t get too hot while wearing them.

Personality:
Es’ra is a quiet man to say the least, and really doesn’t talk much unless he feels the need to add his two cents into a conversation. This trait has made him quite the secret keeper, though most of the time when people tell him secrets he isn’t even paying attention to what they are saying. So I guess that sorta helps to huh? Oh well, on to more important things. Like his dragon he is a very hard-working man, but he is more content to just work and do as he is told instead of plotting and causing mayhem. He is actually very gentle, and would make a good candidate/weyrling assistant if it weren’t for the fact that he has an issue when it comes to having to explain things more than once. It isn’t that he has little patience; he just believes that people should pay attention the first time so he wouldn’t have to explain things more than once.

Es’ra has a surprisingly good imagination, even though he rarely lets anyone see this, and so far as he knows, the only being on Pern that knows this about him is his dragon, and even then he isn’t so sure that Wraith knows the full extent of his imagination. He just doesn’t know how to express his imagination because he isn’t exactly what people would call “talented” when it comes to drawing things. So he pretty much just keeps things he imagines to himself, though he thinks it would be nice to find someone he trusts enough to share those things with. But until that day comes he will “suffer” in silence. He is surprisingly diligent when it comes to learning new things, even if he isn’t particularly talented in that area, he just needs to have a teacher with more patience than himself.

History:
Both of Esera’s parents had been born and raised in a small mining village called Vesesia. The small village had sprung up around the Vesesia mine a few turns after Trelis had been founded. Etyas’ fore-fathers have been mining there since the mine had been founded, and the same could be said about Ranma’s fore-fathers. Ranma, Esera’s mother, was one of those woman who, ever since she was a young child, had been determined to follow in her father’s footsteps. Needless to say, the other miners didn’t like the fact that they had a woman working with them in the mine. It didn’t help that Ranma was better at mining than most of them there. It had taken her quite a while to get what little respect she had in the mine, but it was obvious that more than one of the other miners wanted nothing to do with her because she was a female. Which meant more than one person had been overjoyed when she had become pregnant and had left the mine to raise her family.

Etyas, Esera’s father, was much like Ranma in the fact that he too had wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps, and seeing as he had always been quite bulky, it wasn’t a hard feat to accomplish. Ranma and Etyas had met while mining near each other, it had actually turned into quite the competition. A lot of the other miners had stopped what they were doing to gather and watch the two of them beat at the rocks that held the natural material they were after with a determination to beat the other. Though it was soon proved that neither of them would best each other that day, and every day after that for over a month the two of them competed, and still, neither could best the other. But that is how their relationship had started. It had evolved from friendly competition to a love so strong that no one could come between them. And soon enough Ranma and Etyas would prove to be very gentle parents, much to the surprise of the people that new them the most.

No one had ever suspected that two of the strongest miners in Vesesia would be such gentle and devoted parents. In truth it wouldn’t have surprised the people of Vesesia to see Ranma wrapping her infant child in a mountain of blankets to keep him safe, and she had even attempted to keep him trapped in a small portion of the house she shared with the boy’s father but somehow or other he had found a way weasel himself out of her trap and had almost made it out the front door before she had realized he was gone, and caught him. As the boy got older he proved to be quite the escape artist, and spent most of his time planning ways to slip away from his over-protective mother. The day that his father had offered to take Esera to the mine with him was the happiest day of the boy’s life, well, in his mind it was anyways.

It had taken quite a while of arguing with Ranma before the stubborn woman finally consented as long as Etyas promised to keep his eyes on their child and to not let him get hurt while in the mine. They both knew that if their son wanted to get away then he would find a way to slip away from his father, but Etyas didn’t feel he needed to say that to her. The two of them set off for the mine shortly after lunch and spent the last of the day without major incident. Needless to say Etyas was overjoyed at the fact that his son had decided to stay near him while in the mine, but as soon as they were within eye sight of their house Esera bolted and started talking excited with his mother who was sitting outside on a wooden chair she had brought out from the kitchen.

Esera had been allowed to visit the mine with his father more and more after that day, and so the turns past in that fashion. The winter before Esera’s thirteenth birthday, search riders and their dragons paid a visit to the little village. It was quite the spectacle since most of the villagers had never seen a dragon up close before, and each and every one of them wanted a turn in the front row to see who the lucky person was that they would chose to go to the Weyr for the chance to impress to one of the large beasts. In all of their lives Etyas and Ranma would never had thought their son had what it took to be a rider, but when both the dragon and the rider spoke to the parents they had little room for argument. It didn’t take long for Esera to get ready to leave, but a large obstacle still stood in his way.

Esera’s father was very proud of his son and didn’t have a big problem with him leaving for the chance at a different life. It was the teen’s mother that proved difficult to convince that he would be safe. It wasn’t until he had promised that he would come straight back home if he didn’t impress at the first clutch he stood for that the woman finally agreed to let him go without attempting to go with him. The young teen silently cried with joy as he got his first ever chance to ride a dragon, but he was also crying because he was sad to be leaving his parents. Soon enough his joy won over his sadness and he was soon smiling and staring amazedly at the features of the land as the blue dragon he was riding flew over the land towards Trelis Weyr. It wasn’t a particularly long flight, but it was one that Esera would remember for the rest of his life.

It didn’t take all that long for Esera to settle into his new life as a candidate. He had surprised himself by attending every lesson he was supposed to, and even did the chores he was assigned, though he complained quietly to himself whenever he got assigned to the kitchens. Esera was at the Weyr for almost a month before the eggs had started to hatch, and he was actually quite scared as he stood on the hot sands with the other candidates. He hadn’t felt that afraid since the first time his father had taken him to the mines where the man had worked for the better part of his life. He felt his pulse quicken as he saw the first of the eggs start to hatch. It was a very large egg, and from what he had learned from the candidate master that had taught his class, that egg most likely held a bronze, which would bode very well for the clutch.

To everyone’s surprise the first egg to hatch didn’t hold a bronze, but instead held a brown that was the size of a small bronze. Esera was mesmerized by the dark brown hatchling, and couldn’t believe he was actually standing at the creatures hatching. But he didn’t have time to ponder the possibilities of him impressing the brown for long, for at that moment a very, very large bronze hatched and immediately started doing everything in his power to hold everyone’s attention. There was no doubt in Esera’s mind that the bronze would definitely be a Wingleader someday, just by the way he seemed to command the other dragons as they hatched. The only one that seemed impervious to the bronze’s roaring and trumpeting was the brown that had hatched first, and Esera wondered what was going through the male’s mind.

Come now Mine, surly you do not think that THAT could control your Wraith. Esera stumbled backwards and shivered inwardly at the cold voice inside his head. He turned and looked around at the hatchlings, but when he saw that only one of them was looking in his general location, he shook his head slowly. The brown hatchling, the one called Wraith, started walking towards him, and looked like a wild feline stalking its prey. Es’ra, as he was now called apparently, gulped silently and watched in amazement as the large brown stopped and sat down in front of him and stared at him with rainbow colored eyes that swirled with a speed that made the poor boy dizzy. He had to blink several times, and even had to shake his head before he was steady on his feet once again.

No, I supposed he couldn’t could he. Come, you need fed and cleaned. Es’ra moved instinctively as he led his new companion to where the food was stationed. All the while his mind worked hard to understand the implications of what had just happened to him. He smiled proudly as he watched his dragon devour the meat he was handed. Oh how his mother would freak if she could see him now. No doubt she would try to drag him back to Vesesia, dragon or no dragon. He shook his head, and quickly pushed the thoughts of his family from his mind, and focused solely on his dragon. We shall do great things Mine, your mother will undoubtedly be proud. Again he felt a cold shiver run down his spine, but this time there was a warmth to the hatchling’s voice that hadn’t been there before.

Weyrlinghood came as quite a surprise to the young teen. He wasn’t sure what he had expected, but this definitely wasn’t it. He felt like the world was out to get him and his dragon, but every time people started to think that the two of them couldn’t make it, Wraith and Es’ra surprised them by excelling in whatever they attempted. But it was through all of their hard work that had allowed this to happen. Both of them trained night and day to prove to all of those around them that they could do accomplish any challenge set before them. Though the only challenge that neither of them could figure out is how to make Wraith gain the wait like a normal dragon did as he grew. Oh don’t misunderstand this, he gained weight, but he remained very skinny throughout his entire growth.

Neither Es’ra nor Wraith new what to expect when it came to graduation, but soon enough they found out what exactly it entailed, and both of them seemed to smile at the prospect. It didn’t take them long to prove themselves as very adept flyers, and they did their best at all of the other trials that their graduation had presented. Soon enough the two of them were joining a wing of their own, and working even harder still to rise in rank. It took them four turns to succeed in become wingseconds, and so far the two of them have done a pretty good job at holding on to that rank. Whether or not any of this will change in the near future is yet to be seen, but both Es’ra and Wraith are waiting patiently for their chance to prove that they have what it takes to rise in rank once again, whether this is by becoming a Wingleader, or by winning a ranking flight is unseen, and neither of them care really which happens first.

Appearance:
Wraith is thirty-seven feet long from the tip of his brown muzzle to the tip of his brown tail. He has a surprisingly large wingspan that is more typical of a bronze than that of a brown, and even though he is as healthy as he can be, he is very skinny in appearance. It appears as though he doesn’t eat, even though that seems to be his favorite past time. He doesn’t understand this, but then again, he doesn’t really care either. His hide is a cannon brown in color that almost looks black to tell the truth, but if a person were to look closely they would be able to see that he is indeed brown. Even though it isn’t as discernible as some other browns, his hide fades to a dark brown in color around his underside. Even though the dark brown doesn’t stand out as well as some of the other colors on this dragon, it is still pretty easy to see where the dark brown starts, and the cannon brown ends.

Wraith’s extra-large wing membranes are a bracken brown in color which is surprisingly light compared to the cannon brown of the rest of his body. What stands out the most on him, are the marking on his head, and the swirls on his underside and back. The marking on his head is actually in the shape of his skull and even has what appear to be teeth on his lips. Strangely enough, these teeth like markings are actually right over where his real teeth are hidden beneath his flesh. The rest of this strange marking is what a person would actually expect to see when looking at the skull of a dragon. This marking is actually the color that some people might think bones really look like, and is fact, a bone brown in color. The only other marking this strange dragon has, are some strange swirls on his belly and back right between his wing sockets. These swirls are loosely swirled, and there seem to be only one swirl on his belly, and one on his back, and are the color of the brown on a calico cat.

Personality:
Wraith is a very hard-working dragon, and prefers to be off working alone, or with his rider, than be socializing with the rest of his kind. Even though most browns seem to be a source of comfort within the Weyr, he has a tendency to be quite unsettling. No one is really sure whether he enjoys tormenting others, but from what has been seen it is a pretty good guess that yes, he enjoys it. He is very cunning, and a quick thinker on top of that. He knows how to get what he wants, and a lot of the time that means he must work behind the curtain, pulling strings that most do not see until it is too late. The only person that seems to be mostly exempt from this male’s seemingly evil ways, is his rider. Though there are times when the man will swear he’s been manipulated by his brown.

Wraith may appear calm and even pleasant on the outside, but inside he is secretly planning and plotting ways to cause chaos without getting caught. Though if he is caught he will take whatever punishment is sent his way with an obvious display of pride in his actions. The one really redeeming feature of this dragon is the fact that even though he likes to cause trouble for those in his Weyr, he will do everything he can for them in the terms of helping them secretly when needed, or even being one of those on the front lines fighting to protect them. So don’t let his bad behaviors cloud your judgment of him completely. Yes he can be a royal pain, but he really is a good dragon at heart. It just takes someone with great patience, or knowledge, to really get to know the side of him that he typically tries to hide.

Mind-Voice:
This is pointless, let us go Es'ra.
Wraith’s voice is quiet, and a bit ghost like as it enters a person’s mind. It is cold, and typically leaves an unsettling feeling inside of those he chooses to talk to. This is not always the case though, there are times when his voice is relatively warm and loses that unsettling feeling, but still there is really none too little kindness in this male’s voice. The only person that has ever heard anything that might resemble kindness is his rider, Es’ra.
